It is a celebration of the failing of the Gunpowder Plot on 5 November 1605, an attempt to kill King James I at the Houses of Parliament. The biggest annual fireworks display in Europe is the International Festival concert in Edinburgh, where a million fireworks are set off in less than an hour. Dreaming about fireworks means that you like to be the centre of attention and are showing off to others. It also symbolizes enthusiasm and exhilaration. Queen Elizabeth created an honorary title, "Fire Master of England" for the individual who created the best fireworks. The largest chocolate firework was 3m high and 1.5m in diameter containing 60kg of Swiss Cailler chocolates and was released in Zurich on New Year's Eve 2002. The first fireworks were only orange and white. The Middle Ages created new colours by adding different salts. The hardest colour to create is blue. A rocket can reach speeds of 150mph, but the shell can reach as high as 200 metres. Half of all firework injuries are to children under the age of 16. Sparklers can be used to make funny pictures. All you need is a totally dark setting, a sparkler to draw with and a camera recording a long exposure. A sparkler burns at a temperature over 15 times the boiling point of water. Three sparklers burning together generate the same heat as a blowtorch. When your sparkler goes out, put it in a bucket of water. Country Roads Campaign Last week in my ministerial capacity I joined Scotland Rugby international Stuart Hogg in launching a new campaign urging drivers to watch their speed on country roads and help reduce the number of fatalities. Last year along 755 were killed or seriously injured whilst driving on country roads, accounting for 55% of the fatal accidents on Scotland’s roads. The Scottish Government is committed to achieving safer road travel in Scotland for everyone. This campaign will encourage motorists to drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions. This new campaign is particularly targeted at young male drivers between 22-40, who research shows have a higher risk of being involved in a crash. I urge all road users in Renfrewshire to take care when driving, particularly on country roads, as you really never know what hazards are waiting for you around the corner. Flu Jab The national flu immunisation programme is now underway, and I want to encourage all those who are eligible to be ready for flu. The free vaccination will be offered to people with underlying health conditions, those who are pregnant or are older than 65, as flu can lead to serious complications which may need hospital treatment. This year will also see all parents of children aged 2-5 targeted to encourage them to make an appointment with their GP if they want their child vaccinated, and I hoping this will lead to more people being vaccinated than ever before. So do not delay, make an appointment now and help beat the flu this winter. Glasgow Airport Last month Glasgow Airport was crowned the UK Airport of the Year 2015. As constituency MSP for the Airport, I have said on many occasions that the Airport is going from strength to strength, and with this award, as well as new routes to Canada and Eastern Europe announced last month the growing passenger numbers show no signs of dwindling. Glasgow Airport is a huge contributor to the local economy of Renfrewshire, not to mention a substantial employer. Therefore, it’s continued success must be welcomed by everyone across the area.
