Practical and economical advantages of new grinding technology
André Wyrsch, Willy A. Bachofen AG, Switzerland
The constantly increasing awareness of quality and environment as well as the general
tendency to rationalize have a great impact on grinding and dispersion technology.
Existing procedures must be optimized in every aspect. New product technologies often
require new and efficient manufacturing processes and plants. As a manufacturer of
production equipment, we were subject to the obligation to find a response for this
evolution with the new grinding technology - the high efficient bead mill - which are
especially dedicated to the production of coatings, paints, pigment paste, dyestuff and for
the new application fields of nanotechnology. His unique and patented working principle
provides highest flexibility. The investment costs are lower for conventional mills while the
production costs are extremely dropping.
14:30 – 15:00
The use of solid and hollow glass microspheres as functional fillers for the performances
enhancement in thermoplastic and thermoset resins systems.
Jean-Philipe Curdy, Potters Europe, UK
The use of additives is a common practice in the paint & coating industry for improving
processing and material costs and for achieving the desired engineered properties of the
final product. Costs reduction though still critical, are not the most important consideration
for using fillers in formulating composite materials.
The fillers can be tailored to provide cost savings through increased processing capabilities
and to selectively improve the mechanical and thermal properties of specific compounded
plastics, thus, making the fillers ''active'' or ''functional''. The desired improvements can be
achieved by engineering the key characteristics of the filler, e.g., density, hardness, strength,
particle size, reactivity, shape, etc.
Inorganic fillers or extenders such as calcium carbonate, kaolin, mica, talc, and glass
beads (spheres) have found wide use for this purpose.
Solid & Hollow glass spheres are being used as a reinforcement/filler for both thermoplastics
and thermo setting resins to improve physical properties, reduce cost, and solve production
problems. All commercially available resins have limited capabilities which often can be
extended by incorporating other materials.
This article is divided into three sections: (1) a discussion of solid & hollow glass spheres
and their specific properties; (2) a discussion of the advantages of using solid glass spheres
in wood coating; and (3) a discussion of the use of the hollow microspheres for weight
reduction in specific thermoset application.
15:00 – 15:30
Diverse applications for crystalline calcium sulfonate coating systems in challenging
environments
Modified and reproduced by Ashwin V. Parikh, IBD, India
(with prior approval of Paul E. Morisson, USA.)
The history and mechanism of sulfonate coatings is presented. Laboratory tests,
applications which illustrate performance and recent developments and uses are
discussed.
Petroleum sulfonates have evolved dramatically from their emergence as by-products of
white mineral oil production to multifunctional products vital to modern industry and
commerce.
At the turn of the century, petroleum sulfonates, or their precursors (sulfonic acids) were being
produced in fairly large quantities as “waste product” in the production of food grade white
mineral oils. It wasn’t long before the sulfonate molecule was recognized for its ability to
function as a detergent and corrosion inhibitor.
Today, these compounds are a primary active ingredient in lubricating oils for engines
used in everything from lawn mowers to marine diesel and have a myriad of other uses.
Their chemical cousins, crystalline sulfonates, are widely used in automotive and truck
coatings as well as marine coatings for ship and barge ballast tanks and void spaces.
15:30 – 16:00 Coffee Break
16:00 – 16:30
Crimea CR-071 – a brand new titanium dioxide grade produced by CJSC «Crimea TITAN».
Andrei Gonchar, CJSC Crimea TITAN, Ukraine
(Presented by Valentina V. Kosmina)
The characteristics of a new titanium dioxide grade developed will be presented and its
distinctive aspects in comparison to other CJSC «Crimea TITAN» titanium dioxide grades
will be discussed. The application of the new pigment, Crimea CR-071, in various
branches of industry will be illustrated.
16:30 – 17:00
Process-additives for powder coatings
Heiko Juckel, BYK-Chemie, Germany
A new generation of powder coatings additives based on new chemistry and exhibiting
significant beneficial influences will be described. The new additive line is based on
requirements from the powder coatings market. Improved pigment dispersions, DOI, or
improved out gassing properties are some of the good arguments for the new additive
line of process additives. The presentation will give an interesting overview about the
investigation.
17:00 – 17:30
Neuburg Siliceous Earth: functional filler for epoxy powder pipeline coatings
Susanne Reiter and Alexander Risch, Hoffmann MineraL GmbH & Co. K, Germany
Epoxy powder pipeline coating is widely used to protect various sizes of steel pipes used
in pipeline construction and on a wide variety of piping connections, valves etc. from
deterioration due to corrosion. Essential components of a powder coating are resin,
curing agent, filler and color pigments. Filler is an important ingredient to optimize the
chemical, mechanical and also cost-effectiveness. The objective of this study was to
evaluate the property profile influenced by using the functional filler Neuburg Siliceous
Earth in comparison to other fillers which are usually or potentially incorporated in
powder coatings. It has been found that they influence processing properties, optical
appearance, flexibility, abrasion resistance and corrosion as well as chemical resistance.
The best over-all performance has been found for silane surface treated fillers.
