BOY SCOUTS
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build
self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as
individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility
and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made,
peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
CHURCH NEWS
& EVENTS
CORNERSTONE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE, MARCH 1 ST AT 7 PM
Ash Wednesday is the first day of the Season of Lent occurring forty
days (excluding Sundays) before Good Friday. It is traditionally a
time for worshippers to gather together with penitent hearts to have
their foreheads marked with a cross of ashes in an act of penance and
contrition before the Lord. On Wednesday evening, March 1 st at 7 PM,
we will be having an Ash Wednesday worship celebration. This service
will include the marking of ashes on each worshippers head followed
by a quiet time of reflection at the altar. In addition, as we do each Ash
Wednesday service, there will be something “extra” to illustrate God’s
forgiveness of our sins. Special music will be provided by the Chancel
Choir. This will be a meaningful service and everyone is invited to attend.
Cornerstone United Methodist Church is located at 18081 West Road
(across from the CFISD Berry Center and next to the CVS). For more
information, please call the church office at 281-859-4141 or check out
our website at www.cornerstoneumc.org.
ST. CUTHBERT EPISCOPAL CHURCH
17020 West Road • www.stcuthbert.org
Lenten Study: Forty Days in the Force
Join St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church on Wednesday nights March 8 th
through April 5 th , from 6:30-7:30 PM for our Lenten series, Forty Days
in the Force. All ages are invited to participate. We will explore the many
spiritual themes that weave throughout the Star Wars films. From the
Force to the dark side, the issues presented in the films have a moral
and spiritual complexity that, if paid attention to, can help us better
understand our place in the world and our relation to others and to
God. Through Forty Days in the Force we hope to see the challenges and
victories in our everyday Christian life. There will always be a teacher and
a student and there will always be evil, but thanks to God and his Son,
there will always be good and we will always have a purpose. Nursery will
be provided for infants and toddlers. Star Wars activities will be provided
for preschoolers. Those ages 6 through 106 will explore the force together.
LIFEPATH CHURCH CLUB T3 AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare
for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course
culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for
Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown,
using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL
or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community
service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org.
VOLUNTEER
IDEAS FOR KIDS
& FAMILIES
One of the most important things we can do as parents is to teach
our children how to be charitable. Teaching kids to volunteer not only
helps shape them into good people, but it also teaches them important
lessons such as how to appreciate the things they have (family, a home,
food, and shelter, and other basics that those who are less fortunate
may lack), and encourages them to have more empathy toward others.
1. COLLECTING PACKAGED FOOD - Many local churches and
community centers either donate directly or have a line in to groups that
coordinate relief efforts for local shelters and other agencies that are
providing aid to the families and individuals in need. Your kids can pitch
in by going shopping with you to pick out items for donation, such as
canned food, crackers, diapers, and more, and then helping you deliver
those goods for distribution.
2. DONATING USED TOYS AND BOOKS - Kids can also take a look
around the house for items that are in good shape but that they no
longer use, like toys and clothes that they’ve outgrown.
3. WALKING OR RIDING FOR CHARITY - Here’s a great idea for how kids
can make a difference and get fit at the same time: walk-a-thons or bikea-thons.
Many national organizations like Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation (JDRF) and American Cancer society hold family and kids
walk-a-thons, and hospitals like Memorial Sloan Kettering, which
donates 100 percent of the proceeds from their walk-a-thon to pediatric
cancer research, organize walking events in several cities. The benefits
of participating in a walk- or bike-a-thon go beyond the race itself. Aside
from giving kids a sense of pride and accomplishment when they take
part in an event like this, training for the walk with mom and dad can
be an excellent way for families to spend time together while getting fit.
4. CLEANING UP PARKS - As children get older, they can participate
in clean-up events at the park. Even younger kids can help out by
picking up litter. Contact your local park to see what events families can
participate in.
5. WORKING AT A COMMUNITY GARDEN - Helping plant flowers,
vegetables, and other growing things is a wonderful activity for children.
They’ll gain a tremendous sense of accomplishment as they watch the
results of their work grow, and they’ll be able to spend time outdoors
among nature while doing something valuable for the community.
6. HELPING NEIGHBORS - Kids can volunteer by helping mom and dad
bake some treats to take to elderly neighbors. Older kids can help babysit
young neighborhood kids or help them learn to read. (Your child’s help
may be especially appreciated by a working single mother or a family
that’s busy taking care of a new baby or an elderly parent.) Whatever
activity you and your child decide to do to pitch in, helping neighbors is
a terrific way for your child to not only gain a sense of pride and selfesteem,
but is a great way to make friends with people in your community.
Other ideas are:
• Hold a Bake Sale
• Set up a lemonade stand
• Host a school supply drive
• Scavenger Hunt for Needed Pantry items at a ministry
• Hold a mock baby shower to collect needed baby items
• Build a “Flu Season Survival Kit” with over the counter cold medicines
• Toy Drive at Christmas
It is not too late to
keep those New Year
resolutions. Loving
Arms Pet Placement is
a foster-based rescue
for dogs and cats and
is always in need of
foster families. We have
small, medium and
large dogs available
for fostering. Without
enough fosters, some dogs are boarded at a kennel. They would love to
join your family and help you get more exercise.
Tell Loving Arms Pet Placement rescue in what capacity you can help.
Can your home only accommodate small dogs or can you foster big
dogs? Can you take more than one animal at once? There is a lot more
to fostering than providing food, water and a safe place to sleep. To
attract potential adopters, the animal must be people friendly. Include
the animal in your daily home life inside your home. Let your foster dog
jog or walk with you. Visit a dog park and meet new friends. Get to know
the dog as an individual so you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes,
anecdotes. Treat the animal like your own and train him/her, if possible.
Although you may feel sadness when your foster animal is adopted,
TAX SCAMS/CONSUMER ALERTS
In recent years, thousands of people have lost millions of dollars and their personal
information to tax scams and fake IRS communication. REMEMBER: The IRS doesn’t
initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to
request personal or financial information. In addition, IRS does not threaten taxpayers
with lawsuits, imprisonment or other enforcement action. Being able to recognize
these tell-tale signs of a phishing or tax scam could save you from becoming a victim.
IRS-Impersonation Telephone Scams
An aggressive and sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent
immigrants, has been making the rounds throughout the country. Callers claim to be
employees of the IRS, but are not. These con artists can sound convincing when they
call. They use fake names and bogus IRS identification badge numbers. They may
know a lot about their targets and they usually alter the caller ID to make it look like
the IRS is calling.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a
pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then
threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In
many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting. Or, victims may be told they
have a refund due to try to trick them into sharing private information. If the phone isn’t
answered, the scammers often leave an “urgent” call back request.
Note that the IRS will never:
• Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a
prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail you a bill
if you owe any taxes.
• Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you
arrested for not paying.
• Demand that you pay taxes without giving the opportunity to question or appeal the
amount they say you owe.
• Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
Remember: Scammers Change Tactics - Aggressive and threatening phone calls by
criminals impersonating IRS agents remain a major threat to taxpayers, but variations
of the IRS impersonation scam continue year-round and they tend to peak when
scammers find prime opportunities to strike.
Surge in Email, Phishing and Malware Schemes
The IRS saw an approximate 400 percent surge in phishing and malware incidents in
the 2016 tax season.
Scam emails are designed to trick taxpayers into thinking these are official
communications from the IRS or others in the tax industry, including tax software
companies. These phishing schemes can ask taxpayers about a wide range of topics.
Emails can seek information related to refunds, filing status, confirming personal
information ordering transcripts and verifying PIN information.
Variations of these scams can be seen via text messages and the communications
are being reported in every section of the country.
When people click on these email links, they are taken to sites designed to imitate an
official-looking website, such as IRS.gov. The sites ask for Social Security numbers
and other personal information, which could be used to help file false tax returns.
The sites also may carry malware, which can infect people’s computers and allow
criminals to access your files or track your keystrokes to gain information.
