darkest Africa’’ (London 1890), proved misleading on so many points that it became
necessary to warn the public of its character. He therefore collected and arranged the

letters and diary of his brother and laid before the public an outline of the charges
made against Major Barttelot. - Hess & Coger 184.
22 BEHN, Aphra. - Thomas SOUTHERNE. Oronooko: a tragedy. As it is acted at
the Theatre-Royal. London, printed for H. Playford, B. Tooke and A. Bettesworth,
1699.
4to. Modern red morocco, spine lettered in gilt. (8),80,(2) pp. € 2.250,00
Second edition, one of two editions printed in 1699, including a list of works by
Southerne and Aphra Behn at the foot of the title. - Oroonoko was originally a short
novel by Aphra Behn (1640-1689), published in 1688. It is one of the earliest English
novels and one of the earliest by a woman. Dealing with the tragic love of its hero, an
enslaved African in Surinam in the 1660s, and the author’s own experiences in the
colony. Her story was used by Thomas Southerne (1660-1746) for a tragedy, with a
foreword in which Southerne expresses his gratitude to Behn and praises her work.
The Epilogue was written by William Congreve. The play was a huge succes and continued
to be played throughout the eighteenth century. ‘Southerne changed the unalloyed
tragedy into a split-plot tragicomedy. Besides adding a comic subplot - in which
two London sisters seek husbands of fortune in Surinam- Southerne changed
Imoinda’s race from black to white; replaced lengthy digressions about Coramantien
and Surinamese Indian society with a single comic subplot; allowed Oroonoko to kill
the lieutenant governor, who lusts after Imoinda; and permitted Oronooko to kill
himself at the end’ (Rodriguez, Encyclopedia of world slavery, p.482). This dramatic
adapton is significantly responsible for the anti-slavery forces. - (Scattered light
browning and moderate foxing). - Very rare.
First published in 1839 with the title: Voyage a Surinam. - Benoit was born in 1782 in
Antwerp and died in Brussels in 1854. His stay in Surinam was a private enterprise,
probably in 1831. Judging from the many journeys he made into the interior and the
time he spent among the Indians and Bush negroes and in the town of Paramaribo, he
must have stayed in Surinam for many months. He does not refrain from pointing out
the many difficulties, dangers and privations he managed to overcome during that
period. Benoit belonged to the opponents of the abolition of slavery. He cannot avoid
picturing the harsh and cruel daily existence of the slaves and explaining why they
run away, revolt against their masters and are filled with hatred towards the whites.
When describing their dance-festivals, he says that the need to find an outlet for their
misery accounts for the frenzy with which they throw themselves into it. He produced
a large number of charming and meticulous drawings during his stay. This very
attractive set of views of Surinam include fine scenes of native life, showing costumes,
dwellings, ceremonies, festivals, recreations, interiors, utensils, etc. of the negro- and
Indian population and the Dutch planters. There are also several views of Paramaribo,
plantation houses, a slave auction, and public buildings in Surinam. A remarkable collection
of handsome lithographed views depicting plantation life in Surinam.
The anonymous publication of Images of Light and Shadow from Java’s interior, first
published in 1854, created a lot of bad feeling which impeded but could not prevent
its appearance in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands Indies, the book was what we
would now call a best seller. Junghuhn’s book was prohibited in Austria and in several
German states and principalities because of its alleged ‘denigrations and vilifications
of Christianity’ (Nieuwenhuys, Mirror of the Indies, p.69).
First Dutch edition. - ‘Le Vaillant was born at Paramaribo in Dutch Guiana in 1753,
and after being educated in Holland, France, and Germany, proceeded to Paris where
he studied the natural history collections, and, full of enthusiasm and ambition, decided
to travel into the interior of Africa in order to further his opportunities of gaining
information by observing the specimens in their native countries. Making the
acquaintance of Mr. Temminck, the Treasurer of the Dutch East India Company, he
was enabled to proceed to the Cape in one of the Company’s ships called the Held-
Woltemaade ... The narrative is characterised by the intelligent and interesting manner
in which it is written.’ (Mendelssohn pp.889-890). He was one of the first to study
the birds in South Africa. ‘This work was attacked when published, and some of the
incidents related were declared to be either exaggerated or altogether invented. It is,
however, interesting as an account of South Africa at a time when comparatively little
was known regarding its natural history and the Dutch settlers’ (Cox I, p.389). - A
First Dutch edition. - The treatise by the scholar, Job (Hiob) Ludolf (1624-1704), was
first published in Latin (Historia Aethiopica) in 1681, and is regarded as the first authoritative
account of Abyssinia. He has been called the ‘founder of Ethiopian studies
in Europe’. Although he never visited the country, Ludolf formed a close working
relationship with an Ethiopian monk resident in Rome, himself clearly a highly intelligent
man. From this fruitful partnership emerged grammars and dictionaries of the
classical Ethiopian language as well as a lengthy history of the country. The large folding
map by Tellez, is a landmark of cartography, as it is the first to show the source
of the Blue Nile at Lake Tana. The fine plates depict illustrations of Ethiopean fauna, a
banana plant, decapitation of missionnaries, etc.- (Owner’s name on title-page; partly
dampstaining, slight browning, stronger to one quire). - Rare Dutch edition.
Lolonois and 18 engraved plates (5 folding) by Jan Luyken and J. Harrewyn.
(8),495,(13) pp. € 3.500,00
First edition. - This book is claimed to be translated from the papers of an English
nobleman but according to Tiele it was composed by G. Broekhuizen. ‘ G. van
Broekhuizen, a seventeenth-century translator and publisher from Amsterdam, had
read enough travel accounts to be able to compose one himself. Edward Melton’s voyage
to Egypt, the West Indies, Persia, Turkey, The East Indies and neighbouring
regions is pure fiction, but van Broekhuizen inserted enough curiosities to make his
book interesting’ (Koster, To Hellen’s noble land, 32). Muller, at the other hand states ‘
this description is rendered still more important by the circumstance, that Melton was
at New-York in 1668, in the height of the quarrel between England and Holland on
the possession of the country, so that he uses the names New York and New-
Amsterdam indiscriminately’. ‘Exactly who he was, wether he really existed, or if
Melton was his real name remains an unsettled problem’ (Howgego p.701). The first
part is dealing with Egypt. A very detailed description is given in the second part of
New Netherland, based on Adriaen van der Donck and Arnoldus Montanus,
Virginia, Florida, Cuba, Haiti, Panama and Jamaica; also relating to the buccaneers in
the West Indies. The third part is dealing with Persia and Turkey, the fourth with
Asia and South Africa. Van Broekhuizen showed a morbid interest in oriental tortures,
which he described in detail and of which Jan Luyken presented some vivid
illustrations. ‘Several of the plates are by the celebrated Jan Luiken and are among his
best productions’ (Asher 16). - A very fine clean copy.
John Gibson Paton (1824-1907) came to the mission station, together with his wife
Mary Ann Robson, at Aneitym, New Hebrides, in 1858. The pair were soon sent on to
establish a new station in the island of Tanna, the natives of which were then entirely
untouched by Western civilisation. They were thus the first white residents in an
island full of naked and painted wildmen, cannibals, utterly regardless of the value of
even their own lives, and without any scence of mutual kindness and obligation
Robert Ker Porter (1775-1842), English traveller and artist, went to Russia as historical
painter to the tsar for the first time in 1804. He there gained the affections of the
Princess Mary, the daughter of Prince Theodor von Sherbatov. He travelled in Finland
and to Sweden where in 1806 he received a knighthood from Gustavis IV. In 1808 he
accompanied Sir John Moore to Spain, and in 1811-1812 returned to Russia to mary
his Princess. He was knighted by the Prince Regent in 1813. In 1817 Porter travelled
back to St. Petersburg’ (Howgego II, p.488). ‘A man of the most varied attainments,
Porter was justly described as ‘distinguished alike in arts, in diplomacy, in war, and in
literature’. He was a splendid horseman, excellent in field sports, and possessed the art

and in November 1661 visited Colombo, in Ceylon. During 1661-62 he participated
in the campaigns of Rijcklof van Goens along the Malabar coast, and in 1664 he was
in Bengal and Arakan. In Batavia in 1667 he collected information about the loss of
Zeelandia (on Formosa/Taiwan). He also visited Sumatra, the Moloccas, Amboina
and the Cape of Good Hope, finally returning to Holland in October 1665. Schouten
was an observant traveller who explored inland into the environs of nearly every portof-call,
sometimes by himself or with a small group of comrades. His narrative, full of
anecdotes as well as information gleaned about countries he had not visited became
particularly popular with readers in the eighteenth century, when it was published in
no fewer than seven editions (Howgego, Encyclopedia of exploration, p.947). Because
of its extraordinary literary quality this travel-account stayed very popular till to-day.

The official account of Scott’s second and last polar expedition. This British Antarctic
Expedition (1910-13) almost failed on her way south, when the Terra Nova was
caught in a terrific storm. Scott finally reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912, 33
days after Amundsen’s expedition. Scott and the four men with him perished on the
return trip in 1913. ‘It is a harrowing and courageous story, which earned its place in
the canons of polar literature’ (Stam. Books on ice, p.88). Herbert Ponting, the photographer,
made the first moving picture documentary of this Antarctic expedition. -
First edition; with armorial bookplate. - These letters were written by the sister or
sister-in-law of Richard Tully, British consul at Tripoli from 1783 to 1793. The work is
particularly valuable for its details of family life in the seraglio. The female members
of Tully’s family were on intimate terms with the Bashaw’s family and were admitted
into all the life of the seraglio. This is one of the most important records of Tripolitan
life during the 18th century. - ‘It is a delicious mixture of sensational subject-matter
and deadpan delivery’ (Robinson, Wayward Women, p.248). The very attractive plates
depict genre scenes and costumes. - A fine copy.
Original edition. - One of the most extensive works on the history of the Far East,
which never can be superseded as many of the documents of which the author made
use, do not longer exist. François Valentijn (1666-1727) was a minister of the Dutch
Reformed Church who lived for many years on Amboyna and Java. During this
period he collected an enormous mass of information, especially in the fields of history,
geography and ethnology, concerning all parts of the world where the VOC was
active: Indonesia, with large parts on Batavia and the Moluccas, Persia, Malacca,
Ceylon, India, Cape of Good Hope, Japan, China and Formosa, etc. The work is profusely
illustrated with 338 fine engraved maps, plans, portraits and spectacular views.
They are engraved by the best artists of the time like F. Ottens, J.C. Philips, G.
Schouten, J. Goeree etc. mostly after designs by M. Balen. Apart from the fine engravings
the work is of particular interest for its cartography. It contains interesting maps
of Australia, probably drawn after manuscript maps now lost. For his descriptions of
the natural history of Amboyna Valentijn used i.a. the unpublished ‘Amboinsch
Dierboek’ by the famous naturalist Rumphius, of which the original manuscript has
been lost. - A superb large paper copy.
