Ive’s presence at many of the transactions which he describes and his personal intimacy with Watson give his historical narrative an unusual importance, and his account of the manners and customs of the countries he visited, are those of an enlightened and acurate observer (DNB). In his narrative of travel through Madagascar, Fort St. David, Bombay, Madras, Ceylon, Calcutta, Colombo, Anjengo, Cochin, and Goa, the author has written on the people, their habits and customs, religion, buildings harbours and coasts, agriculture, minerals, animals and birds, including notes on Golconda, Hoogly river, Battle of Plassey, etc.- Except a small library stamp on first title-page a very fine large paper copy. In the Netherlands Indies, the book was what we would now call a best seller. Junghuhn’s book was prohibited in Austria and in several German states and principalities because of its alleged ‘denigrations and vilifications of Christianity’ (Nieuwenhuys, Mirror of the Indies, p.69). During his term of duty he joined the embassy of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to Edo. In Japan he secured the good will of the authorities so completely that he was allowed to travel where and as he pleased. His work, beautifully illustrated, has long been recognized as the most authoritative account of that country published at that time when it was forbidden for Europeans to travel in Japan. - A fine copy of this classic work on Japan.
