Daniel Webster (1782-1852) was a leading orator, statesmen, and lawyer. In his
famous ‘Seventh of March’ speech in 1850, he claimed that keeping the nation together
was more important than the issue of slavery. He was widely praised by people in
the South but condemmed by his own party and Northern abolitionists (Rodriguez,
