First edition. - Sir John Ross (1777-1856) set out in 1826 with the small paddle-steamer<br />

the Victory, after the failure of his voyage in 1821. He spent the years 1829-1833 in<br />

the far northwest. He successfully waethered repeated Arctic winters and systematically<br />

accumulated a wealth of scientific data and reached the North Magnetic Pole in<br />

1831.The Victory was crushed in the ice and Ross and his men were rescued by a<br />

whaler, the Isabella, in August 1833 at Lancaster Sound, after a terrible trek South.<br />

The introduction contains a chronological summary of previous explorations in<br />
