Border to Boston Rail Trail Design Slowed
REGIONAL – If you were
planning a bike trip along the 28
miles of a rail trail from the New
Hampshire border to Boston,
you may need to exercise some
patience.
Major sections of the new trail,
including 16 miles in Georgetown
and Salisbury, are being delayed for
lack of funds to complete the design
of the trail. Environmental issues,
such as protecting turtles in the
Parker River, are also making the
design of the rail trail “complicated,”
said Anthony Komornick,
transportation program manager
for the Merrimack Valley Planning
“It takes twists and turns you
would never have expected,”
Bates said. “If you love our Winter
& Summer Solstice Labyrinths and
Ipswich Illumination, then you
will want to be a part of making
this event an Ipswich tradition, our
Celebration of Spring.”
The Ipswich festival is derived
from tradition of Holi, an ancient
Hindu spring festival in India
and Nepal. It is also known as the
festival of colors and the festival of
love.
Holi has a variety of meanings.
It signifies the victory of good over
evil, the arrival of spring and the
end of winter. For many it can be
a time of redemption or simply a
festive day to meet others.
Setting Winter Ablaze
In the Indian and Nepalese
festivals, washable, natural plantderived
colors such as turmeric,
neem, dhak and kumkum are
used, but water-based commercial
pigments are increasingly popular.
Anyone in open areas such as streets
and parks is game to be covered
in the colors. Inside homes or at
doorways only dry powder is used
to smear each other’s face. Everyone
looks like a canvas of colors, thus
the name Festival of Colors.
The Holi pigments are not cheap.
They run about $12 a pound. So
for the first Ipswich festival, Bates
decided to make her own, mixing
50 pounds of starch and gallons of
food coloring. She estimates that
the cost of her colors is about $2 a
pound.
“We had a ton of fun making it,”
she said, noting that she had several
false starts. She and her team used
cafeteria trays from Winthrop
school to mix them.
With the strong response on
social media the event is getting,
she wonders if she has enough
colored starch.
The event, which runs from 1
to 3 p.m., is free, but parking fees
apply.
Dogs are welcome. If they do not
have a beach sticker, one can be
purchased for $3 per dog.
“It will be the best dog party,”
Bates said.
organization.
Funding for the trails comes
from the cities and towns, a
federal earmark in a transportation
appropriations bill and from
MassDOT. The federal dollars are
allocated from the Congestion
which is designed to promote
to Georgetown’s two projects, said
530
Stantec, a global engineering design
firm.
Estimates now in the federal
Transportation Improvement Plan
are that the completion of the
Salisbury’s trail will be delayed about
a year until 2019, Kormornick
said. The southern section of the
Georgetown trail, which includes
a small portion in Boxford, will
be delayed until 2019. And the
northern section of Georgetown,
which extends into Byfield and
includes the environmentally
challenging section along the Parker
River, will be delayed until 2020.
Both Georgetown and Salisbury
officials have expressed frustration
with the delays in the completion
of their trails.
Jerry Klima, Salisbury’s moderator
and leading advocate for rail trails,
said the town is trying to figure
out how to pay for the balance of
the design for its trail. The town
is concerned about the significant
delays in finishing the trails, he
said.
Georgetown officials agreed that
they want to see more progress in
completing the trails.
Some officials are even
questioning what happened to the
rest of the design funds.
FINALLY...A Personal Healthcare Relationship!
It’s not just any doctor who will see you on a Sunday evening after
trading a few texts. For Dr. George Papanicolaou, however, that’s just
the kind of relationship he has with his patients.
One Sunday evening last summer, Dr. Papanicolaou—Dr. George
to most—got a text from a patient. He’d been out golfing and his
14-year-old son accidentally hit him in the head with a club. He was
bleeding profusely, but rather than send him to the ER, Dr. George
met him at his practice.
With no waiting and unnecessary forms, Dr. George had him
all stitched up and on his way home. It’s all thanks to Dr. George’s
relationship-based approach to medicine and the member-focused
model of his practice, Cornerstone Personal Health.
“The industry calls it a concierge practice, but I just like to think
of it as a lifelong partnership with my patients,” said Dr. George. “I
want to spend time with my patients, get to know them, be available
when they need me, and really help them lead the healthiest, fullest
lives possible. Disease and disability don’t just happen, neither does
health. Lifestyle choices like eating, exercising, sleeping, socializing,
and stress determine how healthy and productive we can be.
See above information for more details about an event to meet and
hear Dr. Papanicolaou discuss his relationship-based family medical
practice designed to help improve wellness as well as to be there for
you and your family when needed.
For
Sale
As we all know by now we have
been in a prolonged “sellers” market.
Home prices are up, interest rates
are good and inventory is way down.
All this sounds great for a seller, but
how do you go about buying in this
market? Everyone is telling you to
buy a home for any number of reasons
(tax breaks, long term and maybe short
term appreciation, etc) but with so few
available how do you go about it? Here
are some thoughts.
Decide:
Figure out what matters and what
you need. Seems simple, right? Well
not so fast. You may say that you don’t
like ranches or split level homes but
are you going to consider them if one
comes on in a neighborhood you like?
Determine your absolute must haves
(“we need 3 or more bedrooms”) and
your no way (“there is no way I am
buying a home without a basement”).
Here are some popular determining
factors in choosing a home:
Location: The location of a house
can be one of the most important
factors when buying a property.
Determine what towns you will look
in and just as importantly which
ones you will not look in. Location
can mean not only which towns
you do or don’t want to live in but
where in a town. Are busy streets
a possibility for you? If so, you
may find a similar home on a main
street is less expensive than one on a
country road or side street.
Size: What is the minimum
square footage you can live with?
How many bedrooms do you want?
How many do you need? Same goes
with bathrooms. Do you need two
full baths or can you live with one if
everything else about the home fits?
Schools: If you have children,
or are planning to start a family, you
Real Estate • For Sale
Determined to Buy
Sports • Sports • Sports
By John McCarthy, Rowley Realty
need to consider the schools. Even if
you do not have children the school
system can impact the value of your
home. If the school system places
at the bottom of the rankings your
town is much less desirable to live
in, therefore lowering the number of
potential buyers to your area, which
in turn lowers your home value.
This may not be a deciding factor for
you now but something to keep in
mind.
Keep Score: One of my first buyers
used this simple, but very effective
way to compare the properties we
saw. Every time he walked out of
a property he sat in the front seat
of my car and scored the home in a
number of different categories from
1 to 5 (5 being the best). He then
went back and decided which ones
to see a second time based on this
score. If you see more than a few in
a day they can blend together, take
notes and review them.
Get Preapproved: Do it now, not
when you see a home you like. Getting
preapproved is free and doesn’t take
long. If you see a home you want to
make an offer on, why call and find out
that your mortgage person is away for a
few days. Have a preapproval letter in
hand when you go out to see homes.
How Much: Look into what the
situation of the seller is, for example,
are they eager and in a hurry to move,
or not in a rush? Maybe they are willing
to take a little less if you can push the
closing date out an extra month or two.
Are you competing with another offer?
If you do not have a home to sell first
you are very attractive to sellers in this
market, while maybe the other offer is
contingent on a sale. Knowing these
facts can have a significant impact on
the kind of offer they accept.
Make the Offer: If your home
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
Isn’t tooth loss inevitable in the
later years?
Today, older adults are keeping
their natural teeth longer because
of scientific developments and the
preventive emphasis in dentistry.
This improvement was seen in the
results of a survey released by the
National Institute of Dental and
Craniofacial Research. They showed
that among persons aged 55 to 64,
the rate of toothlessness dropped 60
percent since 1960.
Good oral hygiene and regular
dental care are important throughout
your life, whatever your age. By
practicing good oral hygiene at home
and visiting your dentist regularly,
you will prevent dental problems
and save time and money as well.
There are two things that cannot
be disputed when it comes to oral
health:
1. Quality of life is better with a
healthy mouth full of teeth
2. Your mouth is the gateway
to the rest of your body. If
you care about being healthy,
you should take the steps
Brighter Smiles...
Dental Changes with Age – Part 1
necessary to have optimum
dental health
At my age, why should I bother
with oral hygiene and going to the
dentist?
Thorough daily brushing and
flossing of your natural teeth are
essential to keep them in good
condition—especially as you age.
Plaque, the sticky, colorless layer of
bacteria that causes tooth decay and
periodontal (gum) disease, can build
up quickly on the teeth of older
adults, particularly when they neglect
oral hygiene. This can increase your
risk for tooth decay and periodontal
disease.
A few simple steps can help you
maintain good oral health throughout
your life. Brush your teeth twice
a day with a fluoride toothpaste,
and clean between your teeth daily
with floss or interdental cleaners.
Be sure to see your dentist regularly
for exams and professional teeth
cleaning. Professional monitoring of
your oral health status is essential.
Should adults be concerned about
cavities?
Tooth decay is not just a child’s
problem. Adults of all ages can
have cavities. The causes for tooth
decay are the same for everyone,
regardless of age. Decay results when
the bacteria in plaque feed on the
carbohydrates (sugar and starch) in
our diet to produce acids that can
cause cavities.
Decay rates can change throughout
our lifetime for various reasons.
Adults are more likely to have decay
around older fillings or other dental
work. Decay of the tooth root is also
common among older adults. Root
caries (decay) occur when the gums
recede, exposing the softer root
surface, which decays more easily
than tooth enamel.
Tooth decay is also promoted by
dry mouth. This condition, called
xerostomia, occurs when the supply
of saliva is greatly reduced. It can be
caused by many types of medications
(such as anti-histamines, antihypertensives,
and anti-depressants)
or radiation therapy to the head or
neck. Saliva is needed to lubricate
the mouth, wash foods away and
neutralize the acids produced by
plaque.
Allowed to continue, dry mouth
can lead to rampant tooth decay. If
you think you have this problem, be
sure to discuss it with your dentist
or physician. They may recommend
a saliva substitute and/or fluoride
products to help prevent decay.
….to be continued
