For the 13th year, sixth
through eighth grade students
at Hickory Creek Middle
School voted for their
favorite book through a state
program, the Rebecca Caudill
Young Readers Book
Award on Feb. 23. Along
with voting, students could
participate in a silent auction
for gift cards and books.
They also enjoyed food,
drinks and open gym times.
The annual event was supported
by the District 157-C
Education Foundation and
the school’s student council.
The students were challenged
to read as many
books as they could from a
master list and could qualify
as official judges by reading
three or more of the 20
nominated titles. As judges,
they had the opportunity to
vote for their favorite title
and help choose the 2017
Caudill book for Illinois.
The program also reinforced
Hickory Creek’s initiative
where students are asked to
read for pleasure 20 minutes
each night.
The Caudill award is given
to the author of the book
voted most outstanding
by students in grades four
through eight in participating
Illinois schools. The program
was developed to encourage
children and young
adults to read for personal
satisfaction. Any school in
Illinois may participate in
the voting by agreeing to
meet the program requirements.
The award is named
in honor of author Rebecca
Caudill who lived and wrote
in Urbana for 50 years. The
award is given in recognition
for her literary talent
and the universal appeal of
her books. The list of book
titles and more information
about the program can be
found at the website www.
rebeccacaudill.org.
Twenty students read all
20 books, 212 students qualified
as official judges by
reading at least three titles,
and as a school, students
read more than 1,500 books.
Students who read all 20
nominated books included
