ACADEMICS William R. Bower, Director of Studies Tel: (724) 639-8038, E-mail: bill.bower@kiski.org Kiski offers a full college preparatory curriculum, which exposes boys to the broad range of the liberal arts and sciences and helps them gain entrance into a four-year college of their choice. Each student should seek to challenge himself and take full advantage of what Kiski has to offer academically. The fact that classes are small (average class size is 12 students) and that teachers are available for extra help outside of the classroom are two major features that distinguish Kiski from most other schools. Teachers are available for extra help during the day or in their homes on campus in the evenings. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this feature of Kiski. If they are experiencing difficulty in a course, students may be required to meet with their instructors. Mandatory study hall in dorm rooms takes place nightly from 7:30-9:30 pm. During this time, students may sign out, with the dorm master’s permission, to see a teacher or to go to the library. It is hoped that by the senior year, students have achieved the self-discipline necessary to study on their own, and therefore quiet hours are enforced in senior dorms instead of study hall. Class changes may be made only with the approval of the Director of Studies, and section changes are only made if there is a conflict with another course. Typical Daily Schedule • Breakfast 7:15-7:45 am • Period 1: 8:00-8:50 am • Period 2: 8:55-9:45 am • Break: 9:45-10:00 am • Period 3: 10:00-10:50 am • Period 4 Lab: 10:55 am-12:15 pm • Lunch: 12:20-12:55 pm • Period 5: 1:00-1:50 pm • Period 6: 1:55-2:45 pm • Sports: 3:30-5:30 pm • Dinner: 6:15-6:45 pm • Study Hall: 7:30-9:30 pm • Lights out for underclassmen: 10:30 pm Graduation Requirements Every candidate for graduation must successfully complete twenty credits. Graduation requirements include: • four years of English • four years of Mathematics • three years of the same Foreign Language • three years of Science • three years of History • two years of Fine and Performing Arts • Life Skills A senior who fails a course will not graduate. Commencement Activities Commencement week activities begin with Honors Convocation in which underclassmen are recognized for their accomplishments. • Exams are given this week. • Underclassmen are allowed to leave after their last exam. • Junior Prefects are asked to stay an extra day to help with commencement. • The Senior Trip requires participation from the entire senior class. • A Senior Reception held at the Swank Student Center precedes the Senior Banquet. • Graduation is held the following day. • Attendance at these events is required for all graduating seniors. Grading at Kiski Students are graded by their teachers at 4-5 week intervals, depending on the number of classes the calendar permits. Students receive reports of their academic progress from the Headmaster in October, November, January and April and with them the words of encouragement and advice that Kiski boys remember for the rest of their lives. These monthly reports will also be mailed home. At the end of each of the three terms, December, March and June, final grades and comments are sent to each student’s family. The grade in June represents the grade for the year and is the one that will appear on the transcript. Families of students are also notified of any unusual situation if it should occur. Students receive percentage grades during the individual marking periods. These are then converted to letter grades for transcripts. Effort grades are also given at Kiski and are considered very important indicators as to how a student is adapting to the curriculum. Examination Procedures Final exams in all courses are given in November before the Thanksgiving Break and in May. All final exams are scheduled, and no student is expected to take more than two exams on a given day. The maximum length for exams is two hours. Students should be sure to schedule travel arrangements so as not to conflict with exams. Final exams in November and May are scheduled and cannot be taken early. Please note the start and end of vacations when making travel plans. There will be no exceptions. Academic Integrity and Plagiarism As an institution with a serious commitment to education, it is necessary to both maintain an environment of academic honesty and to foster the growth of respect for that same honesty in our students. Academic integrity can be defined as the adherence to a sense of personal responsibility, a respect for the work and ideas of others, and the realization that honesty comes before personal advancement. Academic honesty is dependent upon the members of an academic community such as The Kiski School. All of the members of that community must share a respect for the ideas and works of others. While it is accepted, even required, for a scholar to build on the ideas of those who have come before, it is also required to credit the ideas of those predecessors for the progress they have made. It is by building faith in this way that trust is formed and intellectual growth continues. Without the environment of trust in a community, intellectual growth is stifled and competition overtakes curiosity. The Kiski School K-book Page 15
