the Autum/Winter 2011 fashion season is all about contrasts
and radical statements. In terms of colours, materials, cuts. Full of references
to the 70ies as the decade of social conflicts. On the one hand,
excessiveness and aggressiveness wage a final battle for an illusion
already lost. On the other hand optimism and hope persist, the hippie
legacy of positive vibes. All this rounded off with classic elements and
geometrical clarity that herald the beginning of a new business decade.
In its distinct, unconventional approach Kaviar Gauche unites the
opposite poles of pungency and sweetness, ardour and coolness, sin
and innocence using eccentric material mixes, drawing inspiration
from rock singer Suzi Quatro or Nico the fallen angel of rock band
Velvet Underground and the natural look of Jane Birkin or lolitaesque
Nastassja Kinski.
The collection’s 50 pieces, including 30 daywear/business outfits and
20 evening outfits is all about reduction to the essential – which doesn’t
exclude the use of contrasting materials like cashmere and latex, wool
and leather, silk and lacquer, though. The designs stand out for their
precise, straight over-sized cuts and range from jumpsuits and culottes
to retro classics like maxi coats and trench coats as well as egg-shaped
coats. The combination of wide cashmere pants and tight-fitting latex
tops or flowing, semi-transparent chiffon pants and a long blazer vest
is exemplary of the collection. It goes without saying that 70s-inspired
feminine bell bottom cuts also feature in the collection and are juxtaposed
with androgynous trouser combinations and silk blouses and
leather skirt combinations for a soft rebel feel. In addition to cool elegance
comfort is a key factor. Using materials like mohair, cashmere,
jersey or angora adorned with subtle lace and embroidery for the

collection’s sensual coats or floorlength multilayer dresses, Kaviar
Gauche creations provide a great sense of well-being. This modernised
form of sensuous purism is at its best when delicate flowing materials
are paired with masculine details such as emphasised collars etc.
Black Pepper / White Sugar – the colour range, too, is all about the
play of contrasts. Designers Alexandra Fischer-Roehler and Johanna
Kühl concentrate on black and white, rounded off by vanilla, caramel
and noisette shades to soften the overall effect.
In its true accessory tradition, Kaviar Gauche has also come up with
about ten new bag designs made from leather and patent leather for
all kinds of occasions – including utility, city and glamorous evening
bags. The label’s signature lamella bags also get a makeover, featuring
chain and wood elements. In addition, bracelets and belts complete the
70ies’ inspired look. The “Black Pepper / White Sugar” theme of the
Autumn/Winter 2011 collection is also at the centre of the continued
collaboration with shoe manufacturer Görtz from Hamburg. Together
with Görtz, the two Berlin-based designers will present 12 new shoe
models, colour-coordinated in black and creme, made from a graphic
patchwork of short fur, crashed and croco print nappa or salmon
leather. Metal elements, rifle buckles or elastics are further highlights.
These eye-catchers are sparingly employed, however, in order to maintain
the overall effect of subtle timelessness.
Of course, the collection is not complete without the traditional wedding
gown. The empire waist dress made from organza comes in a soft
vanilla shade. Its asymmetrical cut reinterprets the classic bride’s gown
for our modern age and perfectly rounds off the entire collection. ♥

talk about styling, hair, make-up. the design-duo from Berlin
allows us an exclusive look behind the scenes of their image
campagin shoot shown on the first pages.
What was your inspiration for the
KAVIAR GAUCHE AW11-12 collection
and what theme did you choose?
Black Pepper / White Sugar, the name of the
collection, is all about contrast and radical
statements. The late 70s were a great inspiration
for us: it was a dynamic time based
on freedom of expression, feminimsm and a
powerful move into an upcoming business
decade.
How would you describe the AW11-12
collection?
The collection consists of 50 pieces, including
30 daywear and 20 evening outfits. All
materials were chosen very carefully to match
almost every look, while still offering an
interesting twist. This included combining
cashmere with latex or wool with leather and
silk. Our intention was to unite two opposite
poles present in our collection, as traits
found in almost every woman: pungency and
sweetness or sin and innocence.
Who do you have in mind when you design
a new collection?
Generally, we have our clients in mind –
independent women who are style concious,
but also have other clearly set priorities. For
them, fashion is one of life‘s a beautiful
accessories, but they would never compromise
their own style and identity for a trend.
Our AW11-12 collection offers a great range
of materials, cuts and colors to match the
desire of most women to underline their
personality.
Which Make-up did you choose for the
image campaign to underline the look?
This time, we experimented with the makeup
based on the aspect that the pieces in the
collection can be worn throughout the whole
day and into the night. One the one hand,
the hairstyle and make-up gives the collection
a seductive and energetic feel – on the
other hand it makes the look more modest
and suitable for daytime use. The styling is
stronger in the image campaign compared
to the catwalk looks , but still – the look is
progressive in an unobtrusive way.
How did you choose to style the model’s
hair?
Kaviar Gauche is all about compatible
contradictions. We believe that opposites
agree, that pure can be sexy and that subtle
can be energetic. We wanted to create a sleek
and shiny hair-style for this collection. The
model we chose has beautiful long blonde
hair, which portrays femininity and pureness;
but by bringing movement into the look, or
parting it on just one side, it also becomes
flirtatious and powerful. Since our very first
Fashion Week in London in 2008, we have
cooperated with Wella Professionals
and found in them a perfect partner who
envisions our style and attitude. For the
AW 11-12 shoot we used the new Wella
Professionals styling range for the first time.
The premium products enabled us to create
amazingly glossy and elegant looks for our
models. Backstage it is essential to have trusted
professional haircare products you can
rely on. Not only the new primer - the Velvet
amplifier - enthralled our stylist, but also the
Shimmer Delight spray. It creates a beautiful
finish and it highlighted the essence of our
collection perfectly. ♥

After two successful seasons, Kaviar Gauche and Ludwig
Goertz GmbH have ventured on their third cooperation, resulting
in their latest Autumn/Winter 2011 collection.
Once more, a complete head-to-toe look has evolved which radiates
exclusivity on the catwalk, yet is clearly accessible to every modern
woman. Those who had the chance to get a first glimpse of the
collection during the recent Mercedes Benz Fashion Week will
know what to expect: twelve new, powerfully sensual shoe models.
The Berlin-based designer-duo Alexandra Fischer-Roehler and
Johanna Kühl play with contradictions in their current collection
entitled „Black Pepper/White Sugar“.
The title underlines the choice of color with a clear focus on black
and white, including a transition to a warm crème, caramel and
tortora. In comparison to previous collections which featured higher
heels, the use of a slightly lower wedged heel states a collision of
elegance and comfort, enabling the shoe to be worn 24 hours a day.
The pieces are designed in an extremely reduced, elegantly graphic
way and are continuously patched with external materials such as
short fur, crashed nappa leather and cocoprint nappa. The shaping
is partially based on a classical men’s shoe, but discreet detailing
such as metal elements, rifle buckles, or elastics carry the distinguishable
signature of Kaviar Gauche.
The collection, designed by Kaviar Gauche and produced in Italy,
will be available in ten exclusively selected Goertz 17 outlets by August
2011. Additionally, the online-shop will offer all shoe models
at www.goertz.de. ♥
