Into the Woods,
Again by Robert Blacker
This season you have the opportunity to see four
plays by Shakespeare that use some variation
of his favourite motif – the contrast of city and
country. In The Two Gentlemen of Verona, the title
characters are tested in the big city of Milan. This
is an early play, and Shakespeare was after all a
small-town boy who also went to the big city, which
was as exotic for him as Milan is for the two young
men of that play.
After a decade of living in London, Shakespeare
reversed this motif. Perhaps he had lived in London
long enough to question life there. Shakespeare
now sent his characters from city and court to
a romanticized version of the countryside of his
youth. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, seen here
last season, Shakespeare’s lovers flee the edicts
of fathers and court to the magic of the Athenian
woods, where they are properly re-paired. In As
You Like It, the refugees of a cruel court are tested
in the Forest of Arden.
In the prose romance that is Shakespeare’s
source for the story, Arden is located near
Bordeaux. This provides the French setting for
the play. Of course, there is also a Forest of Arden
in Warwickshire, where Shakespeare was born,
and Arden was his mother’s maiden name. This
explains the references to Robin Hood in a play
with a French setting and in which the country folk
– Corin, Silvius, Audrey and William – seem very
English. The Arden of As You Like It, however, is
not simply either an English or French forest. A lion
roams these woods, and a Greek god presides
over the marriages that end the play. As the editor
of the text we are using for this production states,
“Arden is a fabulous forest where extraordinary
things happen. There is no map for it.” Arden is the
exotic other world to which Shakespeare regularly
takes us right up to the end of his career, when
it becomes the countryside of Bohemia in The
Winter’s Tale and Prospero’s magical isle in The
Tempest. It is the place where his characters learn
something fundamental about themselves.
Perhaps the best way to understand Arden is to
recognize what it is not. Arden is not the corrupt
life of city and court. There, Duke Frederick has
overthrown his older brother and sent him into
exile. Succession was a particularly sensitive
subject in the last years of the childless Elizabeth’s
reign, when this play was written, not a subject
for comedy, and As You Like It does not begin as
a comedy. Arden is the place of refuge from the
cruelties of that everyday world. In the words of the
play’s first song, “Who doth ambition shun . . . Come
hither . . . Here shall he see / No enemy, / But winter
and rough weather.”
Rosalind, Celia and Touchstone arrive in Arden
in winter, where the legitimate Duke tells us “the
icy fang . . . of the winter’s wind . . . bites and blows
upon my body / Even till I shrink with cold.” What
Shakespeare emphasizes, however, in the early
scenes in the forest is the importance of kindness
and community. Duke Senior sets the tone: he
refers to his men as “brothers in exile.” Jaques is
there to puncture any over-romanticization of life
in Arden, but the march towards death that he
describes in his famous “All the world’s a stage”
speech is both confirmed and offset by the moving
humanity of Orlando’s arrival carrying old Adam in
his arms. The lightness of “Under the greenwood
tree” is balanced in the song that follows, “Blow,
blow, thou winter wind, / Thou art not so unkind / As
man’s ingratitude.”
Even in Arden, life is seen with typical
Shakespearean complexity. Duke Senior calls
the deer the native citizens of Arden, and Jaques
argues that the Duke and his men have usurped
the forest from them. In the song “What shall he
have that kill’d the deer?”, Shakespeare even
seems to suggest that Duke Senior and his men
have become cuckolds and “wear the horn”
because Duke Frederick has stolen their country
from them. “In Shakespeare’s forests,” Jan Kott
writes in Shakespeare Our Contemporary, “life is
speeded up, becomes more intense . . . and at the
same time, as it were, clearer.”
The harshness of winter and the political situation
give way to spring in the second half of the play,
3
4
and in springtime, “the only pretty ring-time,”
Shakespeare and his young refugees turn their
attention to love – in all its manifestations.
We see Celia falter as she is ignored when her
best friend falls in love, much as Mercutio and
Benvolio are left behind when Romeo falls in love
with Juliet. We watch Touchstone, the ultimate city
wit, bored by country life until he succumbs to the
attractions of sex. We witness Rosalind, who has
learned in her uncle’s court to hide her feelings,
struggle to reveal herself as a woman to the man
she loves. Jaques, the ultimate loner, ironically
spends the entire play looking for someone to talk
to. In Touchstone he finds a soul mate, but Jaques
remains alone at the end of the play, and alone
among members of the court does not return there.
In no other play does Shakespeare more
eloquently express the need for love and
companionship as a refuge from the vagaries of
the world. At the end of the last Coen brothers film,
A Serious Man, the old rabbi quotes a song by
Jefferson Airplane that is pertinent here:
When the truth is found to be lies
And all the joy within you dies
Don’t you want somebody to love?
Near the end of the play, in “It was a lover and
his lass,” Shakespeare unveils his theme for this
remarkable set of variations on love: “Then take
the present time . . . For love is crowned with the
prime.” The “prime” is springtime, as in the Italian
primavera, and Shakespeare tells us to seize the
moment before the harshness of winter and life
rolls round again.
In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare
takes his lovers and us back into life in the court for
the fifth act of that play. By the time he wrote As You
Like It, however, he was unwilling to do this. He has
become so honest a writer that he knows the only
way for his play to remain a comedy is to end it at
the point of equilibrium. What becomes of his lovers
after they return to the court, he keeps to himself.
William Shakespeare
Playwright
Born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, William
Shakespeare was the eldest son of John
Shakespeare, a glover and tanner who rose to
become an alderman and bailiff of the town, and
Mary Arden, the daughter of a wealthy farmer. The
exact date of his birth is unknown, but there is a
record of his baptism on April 26. Since an interval
of two or three days between birth and baptism
would have been quite common, tradition has it
that he was born on April 23 – the same date as his
death 52 years later.
The young Shakespeare is assumed to have
attended what is now the Edward VI Grammar
School in Stratford, where he would have studied
ancient Roman literature in its original Latin. In 1582,
when he was 18, he married Anne Hathaway, a
farmer’s daughter who was eight years his senior.
Anne was pregnant at the time, and the couple’s
first daughter, Susanna, was born a few months
afterwards in 1583. Twins followed two years later:
a son, Hamnet, who died at the age of 11, and a
second daughter, Judith.
Nothing further is known of Shakespeare’s
life until 1592, by which time he was sufficiently
established as an actor and writer in London to be
the target of a literary attack by a jealous fellow
playwright, Robert Greene. Soon afterwards, an
outbreak of plague forced the temporary closure of
the theatres, and Shakespeare turned his attention
instead to his long narrative poems Venus and
Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece. He also began
writing the Sonnets, a series of 154 love poems that
many believe to be at least partly autobiographical.
By 1594, Shakespeare was back in the theatre,
writing and acting for the Lord Chamberlain’s
Men. His income as one of the country’s most
successful dramatists enabled him, in 1597, to buy a
mansion back in Stratford, and in 1599 he became a
shareholder in London’s newly built Globe Theatre.
In 1603, Shakespeare’s company was awarded a
royal patent, becoming known as the King’s Men.
Possibly as early as 1610, the playwright retired
to his home in Stratford-upon-Avon, living there
until his death on April 23, 1616. He is buried in the
town’s Holy Trinity Church.
The Story
As the play begins, Orlando, youngest son of
the late Sir Rowland de Boys, complains to the
family servant Adam that his eldest brother,
Oliver, is denying him the opportunity to make
his way in the world. When Oliver himself
arrives, the two brothers quarrel violently.
Meanwhile, another fraternal conflict has
occurred at the highest level in the state:
Duke Senior has been overthrown by his
brother, Duke Frederick, and now lives in exile
in the Forest of Arden with his loyal lords, who
include the melancholy philosopher Jaques.
When Duke Senior’s daughter, Rosalind,
meets Orlando, the two fall in love – only to
be separated when Duke Frederick banishes
her. Fearing for his life, Orlando flees to the
forest, as do Rosalind (protectively disguised
as a young man), her cousin Celia (daughter
of Duke Frederick) and the court fool,
Touchstone.
Unrecognized by Orlando, Rosalind makes
full use of the opportunities afforded by
her male disguise – but soon encounters
unexpected complications.
Stratford Shakespeare Festival.
Several Worlds At Once
Shakespeare was the prince of paradox. Different
worlds and even different universes coexist in his
plays, creating rich thematic complexity. Consider
the Forest of Arden. Some characters in As You
Like It have French names – Amiens, Le Beau,
Jaques de Boys – so is this meant to be the
Ardennes? Or is it the Warwickshire region of Arden
from which Shakespeare’s maternal family took
their surname? Is it perhaps the Garden of Eden?
Is it a harsh rustic landscape where food is scarce
and the wind blows icy cold, or is it a dreamlike
wonderland where palm trees and lions coexist and
love flourishes? Is it, finally, no physical place at all
but simply a state of mind? The answer to all these
questions is yes.
Time as well as place is
paradoxical in this play. If
you take careful note of
chronological references
in the text, you realize
that the action occurs in
seven days, mirroring the
seven days of creation.
(This is one of several
riffs on the number seven
that help create a kind of
mythical landscape for
this play: others include
Jaques’s description of
seven kinds of melancholy,
Touchstone’s enumeration
of the seven stages of a
quarrel and, of course,
Jaques’s famous speech
on the seven ages of
man.) Yet this same seven
days’ action also seems
to encompass more than
one season, perhaps even
spanning a full year.
To some, this might look
like authorial carelessness;
CostuMe design for rosalind to me, it’s a brilliant
By dana osBorne
example of Shakespeare’s ability to depict several
layers of reality at once. Clearly Arden is all those
places, and more. And if one has any doubt that
the time scheme of As You Like It is deliberately
dual, one need only hear Rosalind discourse on
time’s subjectivity: to a young woman awaiting her
wedding day, seven days can seem like seven
years. Indeed, time moves according to our own
perception, and this is a fundamental truth of life
that cannot be measured by the clock.
Shakespeare could thus be said to have
anticipated the artistic journeys into the irrational
that would later be undertaken by the surrealists,
absurdist and magic realists. Duke Frederick’s court
reflects the violent times that Shakespeare lived
through in the late 1590s. There were horrific public
executions, duelling had become commonplace
on the Strand, wars raged in Ireland, the Earl of
Essex was becoming an increasing challenge
to Elizabeth’s reign, and the threat of a second
Armada from Spain was very much on the minds
of Londoners. At the same time, the humanist
movement thrived and the arts flourished.
This is not unlike the dramatic political and social
contradictions that followed World War I. In my
discussions with scenic designer Debra Hanson,
we chose as our setting the 1920s: an era that
saw the rise both of surrealism and of extremist
political movements – communism, anarchism and,
of course, fascism – which opposed all progressive
genres of art. Drawing inspiration from several
artists of that period, including Dali and Magritte, as
well as such contemporary artists as Glenn Brown,
Debra and our artistic team have created their own
surrealist landscape: an Arden of the imagination
where art can flourish away from a repressive court
– as, more importantly, can the love that nourishes
us and sustains our lives. Love gives us the
impression that our own time on earth is eternal,
and while that’s clearly not true, it is nonetheless a
great comfort and inspiration – especially in hard
times.
The Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre
From General Director Antoni Cimolino and Artistic Director Des McAnuff
Thirty-one members of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s 2010 company have come out of our
professional training program, now known as the Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre.
Founded in 1998, the Conservatory has helped to launch the careers of some of our leading young
actors, many of whom we have had the great pleasure of directing. Providing opportunities for young
Canadian artists is part of our mission at the Festival, and we hope you will find it as satisfying as we
do to watch their growth as they share the stage with some of the finest actors in the world.
Under the leadership of Martha Henry, the Conservatory is made possible by the support of the Birmingham
family, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival Endowment Foundation and the Department of Canadian Heritage.
We thank them for helping us to nurture and support these talented artists in our 2010 company:
A Salute to Our Donors
Our donors make all the difference!
Each season more than 18,000 individuals, corporations and foundations make gifts to support the work of the Stratford Shakespeare
Festival. Their annual contributions total more than $11 million, allowing us to produce on our stages the great work that they expect
from the Festival. The generous support of these donors enables each director, designer, artisan and actor to continue to reach for
the stars, to dream big and to present the most amazing and astonishing productions for your enjoyment and reflection.
Established in 2007, this fund will ensure the future of
educational outreach in Michigan. Led by gifts from
Eugene and Lois Miller, Arlene and John Lewis, Barbara
M. and Fred A. Erb, with matching funds from the
Canadian federal and Ontario provincial governments, a
$1-million fund was created.
Sincere thanks are extended to all donors who helped
Cameras, cell phones, beepers and PDAs
Cameras are not permitted in the auditorium.
the lobbies and balconies of the theatres.
In the interest of safety
Please do not walk on the stage.
In case of emergency
Our theatres are equipped with emergency
lighting. If we have to evacuate, please
follow the instructions of the House Manager
procedures. If you discover a fire, please
activate the nearest fire alarm and identify
yourself to a staff member.
