t’s now May of 2010 and I cannot believe how quickly this board tenure has flown by. 

Certainly when you have a great team like the folks that are running The Chamber, we can 

count on an easier go of it. Thankfully, when operational business is taken care by great staff, 

your board and leadership get to operate at a highly effective and strategic level. Working 

with Greg through a recession would perhaps have been predictably a gloomy time but I 

can honestly state that Greg’s level of engagement and cross-functional support afforded 

our members and certainly our board, steadfast forward movement. We have supported 

our members’ struggling and growing business times while increasing our membership 

engagement through the latest and greatest technological advances. 

In two years our Chamber has gone from antiquated systems to state-of-the-art interactive 

multimedia brilliance. We are leading the way for change and adaptation. We now find 

ourselves being asked to assist other chambers in redefining their technological future. I am 

so very proud to have been at the helm while we navigated through the change of economy 

and technology. As an exiting Chair, one hopes to leave the organization in a better place 

than when one started and so, thanks to Greg and his amazing team and, of course, our 

fabulous Board for allowing me the honour of stepping down proud of what is next to come. 

Our Board, our staff and our members can be very proud of the Chamber as it is today and as 

it prepares for a sustainable tomorrow. Congrats Cory! I look forward to next steps.

In that case, Barbara Donaldson is one of the luckiest. 

Although those who know Barbara understand that her 

business acumen, her dedication to her company, and 

her insistence on the very best service for her clients is a lot 

more important than luck. 

Barbara Donaldson is President of Uniglobe Donaldson 

Travel. The company is located at 87Main St in Cambridge, 

but her client base reaches right across the corporation- 

rich territories of Waterloo Region and beyond. Uniglobe 

Donaldson Travel is a full service travel company specializing 

in all aspects of the industry, including corporate 

travel, high end luxury travel, motor coach, group tours and 

cruises. 

Barbara founded the business 37 years ago. It’s associated 

with Uniglobe, but the business is 100% owned by the 

founder. Donaldson Travel has seen significant growth, 

acquiring five other travel agencies in the past four years 

and amalgamating them into the Cambridge operation. 

She started as a one-person business but now has 32 employees. 

Barbara was always been attracted to the travel 

industry. At age 18, she traveled extensively in the United 

Kingdom and Europe. “I have always had a love for travel,” 

she says. 

Back in Canada, she worked as corporate travel coordinator 

for an engineering company in Montreal and Churchill Falls. 

After four years, she set off around the world. Eventually, 

she found herself back in her home town, Galt, where she 

was offered a job in the retail travel industry. 

“I really liked it right away,” she says. She enjoyed using her 

experience “to be able to help people.” She founded her 

own agency two and a half years later. Since those days the 

industry has changed almost beyond recognition – because 

of developments such as the internet, and the decision of 

airlines to stop paying commission – but her commitment 

to personal service is unchanged. She believes that is a key 

to success. While people can buy travel on the internet, 

doing so leaves them bereft of personal advice or assistance 

when a problem arises while they are traveling. The

benefits of using a travel company, she says, “are immeasurable.” 

Donaldson Travel focuses on key business opportunities. 

One is corporate travel – Barbara and her team provide 

travel management services for many large area corporations. 

“Large companies,” she says, “don’t want their 

employees being amateur travel agents on company time. 

They want the travel management company to have the 

expertise and all the tools. Most of all, they want expert 

service, and adherence to corporate travel policies.” 

Another key area of expertise for Donaldson Travel is “highend 

vacations.” That niche is rich and growing, because 

“baby boomers want to travel and be safe, and they want 

adventure and comfort.” Because of her own extensive 

travel experience, “this is an area where we felt we had a 

competitive edge.” Donaldson’s team also includes experts 

in holiday cruises. “Cruising,” she says, “is very hot.” 

The travel industry has seen earth-shaking alterations since 

Barbara launched her business, but she smiles when she 

points out that, 37 years later, “I’m still here.” 

Well... she’s here when she is not somewhere else! Barbara 

has lost none of her love for travel, and she often leads 

high-end expeditions for clients. But, she says with a smile, 

her Blackberry always on because, while Barbara Donaldson 

may be based in Cambridge, at any given time her 

clients are literally all over the world.

yet. And, in fact, business 

can and is done through these media. 

However, what about the old coffee club 

style where you have proprietary domain 

(you’re the only Financial Advisor in the 

club)?

Are You “E-Networking”?

Well, only at the Cambridge Chamber 

of Commerce can you have your cake 

and eat it too. This new dimension 

of networking provides online lead 

sharing and communication with 

your intimate group of 

networkers, all strictly 

exclusive. The Chamber 

has recently launched 

a brand new concept in 

Business Networking and 

lead generation. It’s called 

E-CPN. This replaces our 

old Chamber Plus Networks 

with an online twist. Now 

you can share and receive leads while an 

automated system tracks the success of 

the group. 

Part of the problem some people have 

with B2B networking clubs or groups 

is that it is becoming more and more 

difficult to commit to that “same time, 

same place” concept. What if your best 

customer needs to meet with you at that 

time or, as many have discovered, the 

group slowly becomes more of a social 

club where very little business is being 

done routinely among the members. 

Another problem is recalling that lead 

or inquiry when you actually get to 

the meeting place. So the question 

that runs through your mind is, “who 

was that person who was looking for a 

photocopier?” With E-CPN, it’s with you 

all the time, you can impress your friend 

or colleague by submitting the request for 

information to one of your peers in the 

group, while you’re having a chat with the 

client in his or her office.

Carla Munch Named Coach. 

Cambridge Golf Club is pleased to 

announce that Carla Munch has 

been named Assistant Coach of the World 

University Golf Championships for the 

second consecutive year. A delegation 

of five coaches and 11 student-athletes 

will represent Canada at the 13th FISU

Your website is a critical component 

in your sales and marketing program 

– at least it should be – and it took 

thousands of dollars in design, content 

development and programming to get 

it all just right. You spent more money 

promoting your website address on 

all your literature, stationary and ads. 

You (hopefully) update your website 

faithfully, and you check your site’s 

ranking in the search engines religiously. 

But after all that, do you really know how 

effective your website is? Who is 

visiting? How often? What content 

are they reading? 

Your website is a big investment 

but learning more about the people 

who visit your website doesn’t have 

to be. In fact, one of the best tools 

available for tracking your website 

traffic is free! 

To the rescue comes Google 

Analytics. An invaluable resource 

to both your IT gurus and your 

marketing staff, Analytics allows 

you to view a vast amount of 

information about those who visit 

your website. 

When you sign in to the Analytics 

website, you are presented with the 

Dashboard. Here you will see the number 

of visitors to your website in the past 

month, a map showing you what country 

they hail from, a list of the most viewed 

pages, and a pie-chart showing you how 

many people came from search engines, 

other websites, or by typing in your 

website address directly. 

But that’s just the start. You can drill 

down through any of that information to 

get extensive e-commerce information, 

find out what keywords were used to 

find you from a search engine, what

Do You Know Who’s Visiting Your Website?

Google Analytics offers an amazing amount of information about your 

website traffic – and it’s free! 

city visitors are surfing from, what web 

browser they are using, and even how big 

their computer monitor is. 

You can then customize your Dashboard 

with the reports you want to see when 

you sign in. How about automatically 

emailing the results to your colleagues, or 

setting up weekly reports that will come 

to your inbox as PDF documents? You can 

even compare the data from this month 

with last month, or change the reporting 

date range. 

Once you begin using Google Analytics 

you should set aside a bit of time to learn 

about all the features and information 

available to you. But to get you started, 

here are our top four favourite pieces of 

information you should be adding to your 

Dashboard: 

Bounce Rate 

This number shows you the percentage of 

visitors who only viewed a single page of 

your website before leaving your site. A 

high bounce rate indicates that the people 

viewing your website are not 

finding the information they are looking 

for right away. You may need to change 

the content of your site, or you may need 

to tailor your marketing campaigns to 

make sure people are landing on the 

right page of your site. 

Map Overlay 

Unless your market is international, we 

recommend ditching the generic Country 

map on the dashboard in favour of a 

more regional map. (Unfortunately for 

us Canadians, “Canada” is as regional as 

you can get at this time.) By zooming 

in to this level, you can actually see the 

number of visitors per city. 

Keywords 

Knowing what criteria people are 

typing into a search engine in order 

to find your website will not only 

help you improve your search engine 

rankings, but it also provides you 

with a list of words and phrases that 

people associate with your products 

or services. This can be invaluable 

when creating any of your promotions, 

whether they be online or in print. 

Referring Sites 

It’s always good to know which of 

your external links are working well 

and how many visitors are finding 

you through those referrals. Is your 

online Yellow Pages or trade directory 

campaign working? Should you be 

strengthening your relationship with 

a supplier whose link is sending lots of 

business your way? Do you have practical 

options to increase the number of links 

on others’ sites? 

There is much, much more you can learn 

from your Google Analytics report. The 

variety and sheer volume of available 

information can appear daunting at first 

but once the initial setup is done and you 

have determined what’s important to 

you, the data you’ll receive automatically

Get better results by 

believing you can 

If you are like millions of others, you marked the New Year with a resolution or 

the setting of new goals for the year. And, if you are like millions of others, you 

are already having doubts about success. You aren’t sure you can get as fit, as 

slim or as wealthy as you thought you could just a couple of months ago. 

You should address those doubts because belief in 

our ability to get the results we seek can be the most 

important factor in our success – even more important 

than our capabilities. As Gandhi said, “If I have the belief that 

I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it, even if I 

may not have it at the beginning.”

And by extension, it is our personal belief in our ability to get 

the results we seek that enables our organizations to get the 

results they seek. So how do leaders and teams increase their 

belief in themselves? Here are two ideas:

Be willing to address doubt and fear 

When was the last time you posted your department’s or 

company’s annual goals and asked those most responsible 

for helping you obtain them, ‘do we truly believe we can 

do this?’ If you do, don’t be surprised if you uncover hidden 

doubts and fears about the ability to succeed that were not 

previously voiced. 

There are many reasons why people don’t talk about these 

doubts and fears, but the reasons are less important than 

the need to address them and the underlying issues or 

perceptions that are creating them. Most doubts and fears 



have some legitimacy. But even when they don’t, facing 

them is the first step to restoring belief. 

According to many surveys, adults most commonly face four 

fears: mistake, failure, disapproval and rejection. Because 

these fears are a natural response to significant change and 

challenge, any leader and team pushing boundaries are 

bound to feel them. 

When these fears emerge, there are at least two ways of 

dealing positively with them. 

First ask, “what is the worst thing 

that can happen if this fear is 

realized?” This eliminates some 

fears because it can expose their 

irrationality and enables you to 

create a plan for managing fears 

that are real. 

Second, if doubts and fears 

persist, talk to others who have 

already overcome them. Seek out 

those who have already achieved 

results similar to those you pursue. 

They have likely developed 

effective ways for managing 

some of the doubts and fears you 

are experiencing. Most people are happy to help a fellow 

traveller on the road to better results. 

Build positive memories by remembering strengths 

If you have ever been fired from a job, you likely remember 

it as traumatic -- perhaps one of the worst things you have 

faced in your career. You might have even considered it a sign 

of failure. But what if you landed a better job later? One that 

paid more and you enjoyed immensely. Getting fired might

later have seemed like a blessing in disguise. 

Examine the other significant events and results in your 

life. Do you view them in a positive or negative light? Is the 

glass half full or half empty? These are important questions 

because your ability to interpret your experiences in a 

positive, constructive manner is the most significant factor 

in developing positive beliefs about your ability to overcome 

similar events and results in the future. 

Choosing positive memories over negative ones is not selfdeception. 

It’s not running away 

from personal actions that may 

have contributed to unpleasant 

results. But because people have 

a tendency to ‘totalize’ negative 

experiences – to see them as 

completely negative – we often 

forget about the positive actions, 

strengths and attributes we 

brought to a situation and the 

contextual issues that impacted 

the result more than anything we 

did. 

Most of us bring the best of 

intentions, skills and strengths 

to bear in most situations. Even 

when things don’t turn out as planned, remembering those 

attributes is a powerful way of honouring your capabilities, 

creating positive memories and building self-belief in your 

ability to get better results next time. 

A little failure, disapproval and rejection are inevitable 

barriers on the road to bigger and better results, but positive 

self-belief will help you navigate them

a marathon event recently unfolded. The 

Energy+ team hosted their fi fth annual 

Chili Cook-Off . It was “game on” and may

26 Ainslie Street South in downtown Galt. 

The building, generously funded by local 

donors and all levels of government, will 

include 66 new apartments. With one, two 

and three bedrooms, these will be rented 

at below-market rents and help meet the 

needs of people in our community who 

wait for a “decent place to call home”. 

Although construction was delayed for several 

years while issues regarding contamination 

were addressed, once the shovel 

was in the ground, progress has been 

amazing! The roof is now on and the interior 

is being fi nished. Occupancy is slated 

for September and the list of prospective 

tenants continues to grow. 

The Reporter Café will be an important 

part of the building. It will feature healthy 

food at reasonable prices and will include 

training programs and employment for our 

tenants and other people in the neighbourhood.

DOLLARS & SENSE 

Welcome to the new Dollars and Sense column. It certainly has been a few years since 

my articles appeared in the Spectrum, and definitely happy to be back in Cambridge. 

Hopefully the information I will write about will apply to many of you and perhaps give 

you some ideas pertinant to your own planning and goals. 

Cottage Succession Planning 

Whether you call it a cottage, chalet, camp or 

cabin, it’s your family’s special place to relax and 

enjoy the great outdoors. And for many families, 

it’s a place filled with happy memories that’s 

been in the family for generations, and will be for 

generations to come. 

But keeping the cottage in the family from one 

generation to the next isn’t always as easy as it 

might seem. There are many issues to consider, 

including how the taxes will be paid. 

Consider ways to reduce taxes 

When you pass along your cottage, you are also 

passing along a potentially large tax bill, which 

your beneficiaries may or may not be able to 

afford. Depending on their financial situation, 

your beneficiaries may be forced to sell the family 

cottage simply to cover the taxes. There are two 

main types of tax to consider – capital gains taxes 

and probate taxes. 

Capital gains taxes 

If your cottage has been in the family for many 

years, its value has probably increased dramatically. 

The property your family bought for a few 

thousand dollars might be worth a few hundred 

thousand dollars today. Even property bought 

within your lifetime might have 

experienced this type of exponential 

growth which could result in a very 

large tax bill. There are a few ways 

to defer the tax. 

Gift the property ahead of time 

Simply giving your cottage to your 

intended beneficiaries ahead of time 

is one way to defer future capital 

gains taxes. If you expect your 

cottage to significantly increase 

in value, consider giving it to your 

beneficiaries sooner rather than later. 

Assuming property values will always rise, this will 

trigger a taxable capital gain from the appreciation 

of the property to date. The tax is payable in the 

year the gift is made. However, it should be a 

much smaller capital gain than the one that would 

be triggered in the future, assuming the property 

increases significantly in value. Any future gains 

will be taxed in the names of your beneficiaries, 

when they sell it or give it away at a much later 

date, and won’t be included in your final tax return 

when your estate is settled. 

Cover the tax bill with an insurance policy 

The most common way for property to be 

passed on to the next generation is through a 

bequest made in your Will. When your property 

is bequeathed to anyone other than your spouse, 

it triggers a taxable capital gain, as mentioned 

above. This large tax bill can be covered through 

an insurance strategy, which provides a sum equal 

to the expected tax bill when your estate is settled.

Learning Business Lessons on the 

Golf Course 

Green grass, fresh flowers and warm air can only mean one 

thing – Spring has arrived! Spring is a time for growth both personally 

and professionally. Over the years, I have learned many 

lessons on the golf course that transfer beautifully to business 

life. Let these lessons help you grow, both as a 

golfer and as a business owner. 

1. Have a clear, calm mind. De-clutter! Spring is a 

time for cleansing. Get out your golf bag, and make 

sure that you have only what you need for the 

upcoming season. Clean your clubs, organize. At 

work, sure that stack of papers on your desk gets 

cleared now. Address things that you have been 

avoiding in order to create peace in your life. 

2. Intention: Know what you want to achieve and remain positive 

and focused on that goal. Before each round of golf, set 

goals that are measureable and attainable (e.g. breaking 90, no 

3-putts). Be sure to review these goals and understand why you 

met or failed to meet them. In business, we need 

to set targets & goals as well. More important 

is reviewing these goals on weekly and monthly 

basis to make our growth measurable and predictable. 

Set goals that are attainable, but aim high. 

You can achieve only what you set your mind to. 

3. Utilize the tools you have. In golf, we have 14 

clubs, each with different specialized features and 

roles. Relate this to your business. Delegate to 

people in your community. Develop new business 

relationships while freeing up time to do what you do best. 



Just as you wouldn’t use your driver from the greenside bunker, 

use the Chamber of Commerce, your lawyer, accountant 

and graphic designer to allow your business to run smoothly. 

4. Focus on the present. In golf, one of the most important 

things is to focus in present time consciousness. Forget that 

bad shot on the last hole. Don’t worry about the next hole or 

tomorrow. You have about 3 seconds to execute a shot, so 

focus is imperative. In business, focus on today. Being in business 

is about the journey, not the end result. Each day, focus 

on and appreciate your office, your staff and your clients. 

Focusing will provide you more satisfaction and greater success 

in golf and business alike. 

5. Have fun. Golf is a game. Sure it can be taken seriously, 

but it is designed for enjoyment. Being outside in beautiful 

surroundings, enjoying your friends; who could ask for 

more? Being in business should be the same. Have fun each 


day! Laugh with your staff. Take them for lunch. Get to know 

clients personally, and enjoy the journey together. 

6. Get fit for optimal energy. Golfers have only very recently 

been considered athletes. They follow strict dietary 

and workout regimes. As business owners, we need to do 

the same. If you want to exude vitality, and never feel tired 

during those late afternoon meetings, we need to take care 

of our bodies. Visit your local chiropractor. Consult a personal 

trainer. Have a Naturopathic Doctor look at your diet. Put 

energy into your physique to maximize your gains in both 

golf and business life.

Number one problem for the past twenty years , the road system 

and moving traffic through the city which no amount of "roundabouts" 

will solve.

The number one issue to me is taxes. While businesses close and 

employers shed jobs the City, the Region, the School Boards, the 

Provincial and Federal Governments are all raising taxes. How 

about lowering the cost of Government for a change. Freeze the 

salaries of all Civil Servants, cut operating budgets, lower staffing 

levels; eliminating some services. We don’t need to be spending 

tax money on a theatre, we certainly don’t need to spend tax 

money on Light Rail because we have empty busses running 

around Cambridge. If Alex Moustakis can’t operate his business 

profitably then I don’t need to support it (that’s right his business) 

with my tax dollars. I challenge Governments to do what 

businesses have had to do, look for cheaper and more efficient 

ways of operating. Can private security firms take over some of 

the policing duties, do we need to pay firefighters to sleep, can 

we deliver welfare better so 85 cents on every tax dollar doesn’t 

go to administration? Lets eliminate all subsidies regardless of 

the cause. Why did we need to build a new City Hall in Cambridge 

when there is plenty of Commercial space? The bigger the 

building the more civil servants it will hold.

With the Fall municipal election this year what is the number one issue on the table for residents of Cambridge? 

I feel the number one issue will be the Drayton Festival; not 

because residents are necessarily against it, but because they 

don't feel Cambridge can afford it at this time. Many, many 

voters I have spoken with are upset that taxes are going up and 

Council has passed this committment to build the theatre.

and opened a new business in the Galt area, my thoughts are that 

the community needs to see themselves in a positive light - there 

is just so much here that has the potential for building a great

happen and if we think small that too will happen. The biggest 

issue for me at all levels of government is finding those leaders 

who can speak to a vision and help us to achieve that vision. Of 

course, I hope that the community will embrace a new theatre 

and welcome Drayton Entertainment. This won't be the only 

answer to Cambridge achieving its full potential, but will go a 

long way to making that happen.

The Business Realities of HST in 

Ontario & British Columbia

Effective July 1, 2010, the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia 

have agreed to implement a harmonized sales tax (HST). The 

new HST will replace the existing Goods and Services Tax (GST) and 

provincial sales tax, and will be administered federally. 

At the time of publishing, legislation to enact the HST had been 

passed into law by the Governments of Canada and Ontario. 

Similar legislation will be introduced shortly in BC and, subject to 

legislative approval, will also provide for the implementation of 

HST in British Columbia beginning July 1, 2010. 

This change will fundamentally reform the two provinces’ tax 

systems and has significant implications for businesses. If you are a 

payroll professional with payrolls in Ontario or BC, you need to be 

aware how the HST will impact your work, as you are responsible 

for ensuring your organization remains compliant. 

How HST Will Work. Beginning July 1, 2010, the HST will be 

applied on most goods and services at a rate of 13% in Ontario (5% 

federal portion plus 8% provincial portion) and at a rate of 12% in 

BC (5% federal portion plus 7% provincial portion). The HST will be 

administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and will use 

the same tax base and structure as the GST, with limited exceptions. 

Generally, the HST will apply to goods and services purchased on or 

after July 1, 2010. During the transition period, the HST will apply 

to amounts that are paid or payable on or after May 1, 2010, for 

goods and services that will be provided on or after July 1, 2010 

Once the HST is implemented, sales will continue to be non-taxable 

for the provincial portion of the tax on books (including audio 

books), children's clothing and footwear, children's car seats and 

car booster seats, children’s diapers, feminine hygiene products, 

print newspapers, and qualifying prepared foods and beverages 

sold for a total of $4.00 or less. 

HST & Reporting . There is no special requirement to register 

for the HST. Businesses in Ontario and BC that are registered for 

the GST are automatically registered for the HST and will be required 

to collect and report the HST according to their current GST 

filing frequency. Like under the federal GST, registered businesses 

that sell taxable or zero-rated goods and services will still be able 

to claim input tax credits (ITCs) on their purchases for each reporting 

period. 

In addition, the CRA announced changes to the GST/HST reporting 

requirements on January 4, 2010. Under the proposed changes, 

GST/HST registrants (excluding charities) with greater than $1.5 

million in annual taxable supplies (including those of all their associates) 

would be required to file their GST/HST returns electronically 

for all reporting periods that end on or after July 1, 2010. The 

four electronic filing options are GST/HST Netfile, GST/HST Telefile, 

GST/HST EDI filing and remitting, and Internet File Transfer (GIFT).

HST & Taxable Benefits. The remuneration—salaries, wages, 

allowances, gratuities and commissions—that employers pay to 

their employees are not subject to federal and provincial sales tax 

(GST/HST/PST/QST). However, the benefits they provide to their 

employees may be subject to sales tax. Generally, if a benefit is taxable 

for income tax purposes, the CRA considers that the employer 

supplied a good or service to the employee and collected the applicable 

tax. 

Once the HST is implemented in Ontario and BC, the value of taxable 

benefits provided to employees in those provinces will be subject 

to the HST, and employers will be required to collect and remit 

the applicable amounts. The HST will apply to all taxable benefits 

provided to employees who last reported for work in Ontario or BC 

before the end of the tax year. 

HST & Insurance Premiums in Ontario. In Ontario, premiums 

paid on various types of insurance, including group insurance, 

contributions paid into funded plans or on benefits paid out of unfunded 

plans as well as payments made into insurance schemes or 

compensation funds established under an Act of Canada or Ontario 

are subject to the provincial sales tax, at a rate of 8%. 

When the HST is introduced on July 1, 2010, Ontario will retain a 

tax on insurance at 8% on the same types of insurance currently 

taxed under the provincial sales tax, and insurance premiums 

currently exempt from the provincial sales tax will continue to be 

exempt. Where applicable, this 8% will continue to be part of the 

taxable benefit to be assessed on employment income. The HST 

will apply to employee benefit plans in situations where the GST 

currently applies, such as third-party administration fees. 

After July 1, 2010, vendors will continue to remit the RST on insurance 

premiums to the Ontario Ministry of Revenue. Vendor permits 

will be closed June 30, 2010, and businesses identified with insurance 

as their primary activity will be automatically re-registered.

Be Prepared. If your organization has payrolls in Ontario or BC, 

you need to be ready for the implementation of the HST on July 

1, 2010. Make a list of what payroll processes will be affected and 

have action plans in place. Work with your IT department and/or 

service providers to upgrade point-of-sale, accounting and payroll 

systems. Discuss the HST implications with those responsible in accounting, 

human resources and benefits. 

The implementation of the HST in Ontario and BC is imminent. Your 

organization must be prepared to ensure legislative compliance 

and future success.
