About Assam Tea Company 

Our family has been farming tea for four generations 

growing some of the finest black teas in the world. 

Our two tea gardens, Satrupa Tea Esate and Rani 

Tea Estate, are spread over a combined area of 

around 2,000 acres of land, a large chunk of which 

are preserved as pristine forests and wetlands. Our 

teas are grown without the use of any chemical 

fertilizers or pesticides in order to conform to USDA 

and COR Organic Standards, as well as to European 

Union's MRL standard. 

Teas should be consumed fresh after harvest, preferably within the first year of 

harvest. Throughout the year, we import, stock and shipout to our clients the 

freshest harvests of well-made teas from our tea gardens in Assam. We have 

also partnered with tea growers and organic herb farmers from Assam to South 

Africa, and local farmers here in Canada and the United States to bring you a 

selection of teas and herbs that are fresh and free of harmful chemicals. 

In our certified organic facility in the Pacific Northwest we manufacture some 

of the finest tea blends in micro-batches strictly using natural flavors from 

botanical extracts, and certified organic flowers, herbs and spices.

chemical residues and preservatives, and 

back it up with outstanding customer service.

Assam is the historic name of a region in the eastern edges of the Himalayas, forming a bridge 

between Bengal and Upper Burma. The 

region, measuring approx. 100,000 square 

miles, is fed by majestic rivers, deep gorges 

fertile valleys, high mountains and thickly 

wooded rolling hills. The region of Assam has 

recorded history going back to 350 AD. 

Even today, Assam is home to over a 

hundred indigenous societies, most with their 

own distinct languages, cultures and 

spirituality. The region today is divided into 

India, Burma, Bangladesh and Bhutan, with 

the bulk of the portion being part of India, 

and collectively called "North East India".

There are about 2,000 large tea plantations, and over 200,000 small tea 

gardens growing tea in the Assam region. It is the largest tea producing 

region in the world. Geographically speaking, there are six tea growing 

regions in Assam - Cachar, Central Assam, Dooars, Lower Assam, North 

Bank E Upper Assam. The teas from each of these geographic regions 

are quite distinct from each other.

Satrupa Tea Estate 

Satrupa Tea Estate was first farmed in late 1970s by our 

parents. The garden is located in Upper Assam, at the edge 

of the last remaining tracks of tropical rainforest in Eastern 

Himalayas. This region is called the "Doom Dooma Tea Belt" 

because of its rich red loom soil that's perfect for tea farming. 

The Assamese tea plant (Camellia assamica) is native this region. 

The best black teas in the world also happen to come from this region!

Pure Teas a Herbs 

Organic Assams 

For being the largest tea growing region in the world, Assam 

has only a handful of tea gardens that are certified organic 

per USDA NOP or Canadian COR programs. All our Assam teas 

are from tea gardens where they are farmed without 

chemicals, but only the teas listed here are from the certified 

organic tea plantations in the Assam region. 

Organic Assam Breakfast: If you enjoy 

breakfast blends, this would be an 

ideal choice for you.

Organic Cream of Assam: Offers noticeable 

briskness in the cup with biscuity, vegetal 

flavor and malty aroma. 

Organic Honey n' Cream: The cup is extremely 

rich and smooth with noticeable briskness 

that shines through the milk. 

Organic Kama Black: A medium quality Orthodox 

production, this tea is easy to enjoy for 

anyone new tea drinkers. 

Organic Large Namsang: This tea has strong body 

outstanding briskness and thick malty aroma. 

Single Origin, Single Estate 

and Single Malt Teas 

As tea drinker we can enjoy teas 

grown in different regions of the 

world. Teas from one specific region 

that's sold under the region's name 

is a Single Origin tea. For eg: Assam 

tea (has to come from Assam region). 

Teas are grown in plantations that 

are also called Tea Estates. A tea that 

is sold under a tea estate's name is 

called a Single Estate tea. For eg: 

Satrupa tea (has to come from 

Satrupa Tea Estate). 

Tealeaves are harvested every six 

days from a plant, and made into 

made-tea that we drink. Each harvest 

in a tea garden taste different 

because of changing factors like 

quantity of rainfall within last six days 

drainage capacity of the soil and any 

ongoing stressors on the plants, like 

pest attack. 

Organic Pekoe Dust: This tea offers an extremely 

strong body that is best enjoyed with a dash 

of milk or cream. 

Teas that are sold "by the harvest" 

usually denoted by a production 

number (# sign) next to the name, are 

called Single Malt Teas. Eg: Cream of 

Assam #227 (teas specifically created 

in the #227 manufacture).

Second Flush Teas 

The most prized tea harvest in the year comes from the 2nd 

Flush or Summer Harvest in each tea growing regions of 

Assam. The teas offer incredible oomph in the cup with strong 

malty and dense liquoring brews. They are greatly sought after 

by German and American tea merchants because of their longer shelf life and their 

quintessential "Assam character".

The Assam region has its own species 

of tea plant, Camellia assamica 

which is distinctly different from the 

Chinese tea plant, Camellia sinensis. 

The Assamese tea plant has a thick 

sweetish malty flavor profile, which 

have been enjoyed in the western 

world, since the 1830s when it was 

first introduced to the British Empire. 

We refer to the Assamese tea plant 

as Assamica.

Are your teas organic? 

Our organic teas have the word 

"organic" as part of their name. For 

example "Organic Breakfast Char is 

a certified-organic tea, whereas 

"Assam Chai" is not a 

certified-organic tea. 

We operate a certified-organic 

manufacturing and processing facility 

and therefore take organic labeling 

and organic chain-of-custody very 

seriously. 

Our teas that are not organic are 

farmed without chemicals and all of 

them are EU MRL-compliant. Each of 

these teas has been independently 

tested to confirm that there are no 

harmful pesticide, herbicide or fertilizer 

residues in these teas. 

Are there animal by-products in your 

natural flavors? 

No there are no animal by-products 

including any meats, seafood, poultry 

eggs or dairy products in any of our 

natural flavors, We do use Bee Pollen 

in a few of our blended teas. 

However all blends are clearly marked 

if we do add bee pollens to them.

Nepals Darjeelings 

In both Nepal and Darjeeling, teas are grown either with pure 

Chinese tea plants (Camellia sinensis) or hybrid of Assamese 

-Chinese tea plants. The teas offer musky and grape notes 

plus are soft textured and extremely easy to enjoy. Darjeeling 

teas are some of the most expensive in the world. Our Nepalese 

teas come from small coops operated by farmers in remote regions of Eastern Nepal.

White teas are made from the same tea plant as black, green and oolong teas. White teas 

are usually more expensive than black teas because they are very time consuming to

green tea.

What is green-leaf? 

The two leaves and a bud that is 

harvested from the tea plant is called I 

the green-leaf. It is the raw material 

required for manufacturing made-tea. 

What is made-tea? 

Made-tea is tealeaves that have 

being baked and are ready for 

drinking. Made-tea is first sorted into 

different leafstyles/grades, before 

being offered for sale. 

How many tea plants are in a hectare? 

If planted in double wide rows, each 

hectare can hold 12,000 tea plants. 

What is the yield per hectare? 

Each hectare yields 2,500-kgs to 

3,000-kgs of green-leaf. 

What is the conversion rate for 

green-leaf to made-tea? 

Each kilo (2.2 Ib) of made-tea requires 

4.5 kilos (10 Ib) of green-leaf. 

How many tea gardens are in a 

plantation? 

Depends on how big is the plantation. 

Some plantations have one garden 

and others have dozens of tea 

gardens. Usually a tea garden is 

between 50 to 100 hectare of land. 

How many kilos of green-leaf does an 

artisan handpick? 

On a flat daily wage, a tea artisan is 

supposed to handpick 22-kgs (48 lbs.) 

of green-leaves, composed of 

thousands of shoots of two leaves and 

a bud.

Chai Blends 

Chai is a blend of tea or herb with a range of spices. The most 

commonly used spices in chai are Cardamom, Cinnamon, Ginger 

Black Pepper, Cloves and Star Anise. Home made lattes never tasted 

so good! 

Assam Chai: Smooth spice and full leaf 

black tea blend that's not too 

overwhelmingly spicy. 

Indian Chai: Granular black tea gives 

this blend a strong traditional 

home made chai taste. 

Organic Breakfast Chai: Perfectly 

balanced flavor of spices and 

organic broken leaf black tea.

Origins of Chai 

Contrary to common assumptions 

Chais with actual tealeaves in them 

has not been drunk in Indian 

Subcontinent for millennia. It was 

introduced to the Indian societies in 

early-1900s. 

There are regional variations of Chais 

within India, and then there are 

western variations of Chai as well 

- all of which taste wonderful! 

Organic Green Chai: Silky textured with 

vegetal flavor of green tea and 

ginger dominating. 

Organic Masala Chai: Whole spice and 

tea blend that taste heavenly as latte 

with milk and sweeteners. 

Organic Masala Chai 281: A spices-only 

version of our famous Organic 

Masala Chai. 

Organic Rooibos Chai: Spicy caffeine-free 

chai blend that's packs a strong 

body and smooth bite. 

Dao of Chai 

Chai is the process of making the tea 

and not the tea itself. Chai can be 

made with or without spices. 

Instead of steeping the tealeaves in 

hot water, bring one serving of 

tealeaves (or chai blend) to boil with 

half cup of water. After it boils for a 

few minutes, add equal part of milk to 

the concoction, and leave it at 

medium heat. Turn off the stove right 

before the milk froths and is about to 

spill. Pour the brew through a strainer 

into the serving cup. Add sweetener. 

It tastes delicious if you serve it over 

ice as well.

Earl Grey Blends 

Earl Grey is a blend of tealeaves or herb and oil of bergamot. 

The oil of bergamot is extracted by cold pressing the peels of 

the bergamot orange fruit. Even though the plant is native to 

Southeast Asia, it found its fame and fortune in Italy. Earl Grey 

is the most consumed blended tea in the world today!

What is caffeine? 

Caffeine is not a benign substance. It 

is a psychoactive drug that stimulates 

your central nervous system. Caffeine 

is found in the leaves, beans and fruits 

of a number of plants including the 

different species of true tea plants 

(Camellia sinensis and 

Camellia assamica), yerba mate plant 

(Ilex paraguariensis) and in 

Coffea canephora and Coffea arahica the 

two most commonly cultivated 

species of coffee plants. 

Caffeine is a natural pesticide for the 

plants that produce it, as it helps them 

prevent pest attacks. Caffeine also 

protects the young seedlings that 

haven't developed mechanical 

defenses as yet. 

Caffeine is the most widely consumed 

psychoactive stimulant in the planet 

and also the one with the least legal 

regulation. Some people are born with 

physical intolerance towards caffeine 

and others develop intolerance later 

in life. 

The United States Food 6 Drugs 

Administration (US FDA) lists caffeine as 

a "generally recognized as safe food 

substance".

To brew the perfect serving of tea, it is essential that you control six 

variables. Use fresh drawn water,l use fresh well-made tea leaves' 

weight the tea leaves per serving3 use a ratio of water to dry leaves4 

ensure the temperature of water is hot enough 5, and track the steeping 

period.6 We offer just the tea accessories required to brew the 

perfect cup every time.

2 Tea Freshness: use teas that are less 

than 18 months old from date of 

harvest, or 12 months old from date 

of blending. Buy only teas you can 

sell or consume within 60-days. 

3 Weight of tea leaves: use a scale to 

measure the weight of tea leaves per 

serving. Each tea and herb has 

different volume. Using volumetric 

measure like teaspoons will give 

incorrect measurements of tea per 

serving.

Quantity of leaves/serving: use 

0.25-grams per fluid ounce of water 

for real teas, and 0.40-grams per fluid 

ounce of water for herbal teas. If your 

brew is too strong use less quantity of 

tea leaves and vice versa for weak 

teas. 

5 Temperature of water: use between 

200°F/93°C to 212°F/100°C for black 

and oolong teas, and 

180°F/92°C for green and white teas. 

6 Steeping Time: Steep your teas for 

3-5 minutes and your herbs for 5-8 

minutes. If the brew is too strong or 

too weak, don't adjust the steeping 

time; instead adjust the quantity per 

serving.

and blends vary greatly.

different if brewed with 3 grams 

instead of 6 grams. Nobody enjoys 

watery and tasteless red-color hot 

water!
