Training Plan
* Warm up & Foot Ladder Drills 20 min
* Basics - push passing, wristed passes, hockey tennis
(bouncy passes)
* Passing & receiving drill 40 min
* Cool Down & Wrap Up 10 min
Tyre drill - 5/3
Coaching Points:
- Pass and move, staying connected with the ball
- Footwork, ball handling, vision
- Collecting the ball, searching for a connection
on the move
- Off the ball urgency, early preparation off the
ball, getting on the passing channel, defining your
lead
- Reading of the play, off the ball movement
decision making
Activity: Drill starts with person on the ball bouncing
the ball off the outside of the tyre, they then pick the
ball up and track either side to get to the outside of
the tyre. As this happens the other two players must
work to move into a passing channel.
* The pass made can be to either of the two off the
ball but must cross from one side of the tyre to the
other. Because there are extra players and options in
this version of the tyre drill the second pass in the
sequence does not have to played off the tyre before
being made. Once the pass is made the passer must
immediately work to get to one of the two vacant
tyres and then prepare to adjust to the appropriate
side to get a pass that crosses the two tyres.
Each set of 3 tyres has two pairs working off them,
1-2 minutes and the same out swapping straight over.
This is a conditioning drill with skill and habit
elements required to be done well under fatigue and
at speed.
Progressions: Change times in drill and rest times.
Tyres
Activity
•Feeder passes the ball between
player in front feet & played off the
tyres.
•Front player receives the ball
correctly and spins away.
•Passes back to feeder- return passes.
2v2
Feeder becomes
outlet pass for
defence
Activity
•Feeder passes the ball to attack to
initiate drill
•Defenders and 2nd attacker may
leave once the pass is made
•Defence are trying to get the ball to
the feeder who becomes an outlet
pass, and attack are trying to possess
the ball with control pass the the green
cones
Coaching Points:
•Review defensive footwork (45s), stick
position, grip, and the types of tackles
we want to make
•Immediate and aggressive pressure
on the ball carrier
•Tackle to gain possession and find
outlet pass to attack
•Communication between the
defenders
3v2
Feeder becomes
outlet pass for
defence
Defenders - Blue
Attackers - Red
Spare player
becomes outlet pass
for defence
Activity
•On the whistle
•Defenders and attackers run to line &
back - attackers start the ball from 25y
•One attacker will be high in circle.
•Defence are trying to get the ball to
the feeder who becomes an outlet
pass, and attack are trying to score.
•Defenders recognise the crash ball to
striker.
Coaching Points:
•Review defensive footwork (45s), stick
position, grip, and the types of tackles
we want to make
•Immediate and aggressive pressure
on the ball carrier
•Tackle to gain possession and find
outlet pass to attack
•Communication between the
defenders
•Line to high attacker.
Attack and go
to goal
3v2
Feeder becomes
outlet pass for
defence
Activity
•Feeder passes the ball to an attacker
and becomes an outlet pass for the
defence
•Defence need to communicate to
work zonally to force a turnover
•Defenders and 2nd attacker may
leave once the pass is made
•Defence are trying to get the ball to
the feeder who becomes an outlet
pass, and attack are trying to score a
goal
Coaching Points:
•We need pressure on the ball carrier,
taking away speed, space, and vision.
•Defence need to communicate to
work zonally to force a turnover
•Communication between defenders
•Discuss the lines/spaces that are
covered and differences to man to
man marking
•Attack need to be creative with their
movement, carry the ball on angles
and be aggressive to break the 2v2.
3v2 to 3v3
Feeder must sprint
outside of the cones
before joining as a
third defender
and must run around the outside of the
cones to enter the drill
•Attackers are trying to score and
defence are trying to outlet the ball to
a resting defender.
Resting defender is
an outlet pass for
defence.
Coaching Points:
•Defence need to force the ball wide
and slow down the attack to bring their
third defender into play.
•Discuss the lines/spaces that are
covered and the role of the recovering
defender (communication and reorganising)
•Attackers need to move the ball fast
and try to create 2v1s by engaging
another attackers defender.
•Progression: If defenders find the
outlet, transition onto attack for a 4v3
to goal.
