HATCH CUP 2017
PROGRAMME

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
HOCKEY NEW ZEALAND
Being selected to play in a national tournament is a great achievement and I am sure we will see
some young stars in the making at this 2017 U13 Hatch Trophy National Tournament in
Auckland. Many Black Sticks have started their sporting careers at tournaments such as this.
From Hockey New Zealand, welcome and Good Luck.
But your week here in Auckland must also be about learning responsibilities on and off the field.
Play to your best ability in every game, be a reliable and considerate team member and, when
the game is over, continue to make the local region that you are representing proud.
Learn to compete, learn to celebrate the wins and be determined to improve when there are
losses and learn to have fun while experiencing the excitement of competing against so many
other players in your age group. Have fun but don’t get into mischief!
In the coming years, there will be many other activities that might tempt you away from hockey
but it is such a great team sport, and you’ll make many new friends here at this tournament,
that I hope you will continue to play.
Hockey is one of the most popular sports in the world. It comes third, behind cricket and soccer.
It continues to be one of the most watched sports during the Olympic Games and is fast and
exciting to watch on television or via live streaming.
While your coaches will be helping you develop excellent hockey skills, it is always beneficial to
watch more experienced players. Hopefully, you will take time to follow our Black Sticks at the
Hockey World League Final being played in Auckland in November. Next year, both our men and
women Black Sticks will be competing in the Hockey World Cup; the men in India and the
women in London.
Also, take time to watch other players at this tournament and back home at your local hockey
parks. Learning to umpire the game will also add to your skills and help you appreciate that
umpiring requires additional expertise.
When this tournament is over, remember to thank all those who have helped you during the
week. This includes your coaches and managers, parents and family (including brothers and
sisters who have watched from the sideline), umpires, tournament organisers and those who
have contributed during your fundraising efforts.
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
AUCKLAND HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
On behalf of Auckland Hockey and our Board I welcome all teams to the 2017 Hatch Cup.
I trust you will have an enjoyable and fun experience during your stay here and I hope you get to see
some of the sights of our big city.
The Hatch Cup is one of New Zealand's oldest sporting trophies and has been played for over one
hundred years. It is steeped in tradition and many of the players participating this week may have
had brothers, fathers, uncles and even Granddads who have played in the Hatch Cup.
I am sure the tournament will provide lots of entertaining matches but more importantly you will go
away from the week with wonderful life memories and new friendships forged.
A big thank you in advance to all the important stakeholders who make this tournament happen from
our AK Hockey sponsors through to HNZ's Tournament Director Phil Emirali and his volunteer army of
officials and umpires and our AK Hockey General Manager and Tournament Administrator, Nicola
Connell.
Enjoy the week and have fun making those hockey memories.
Take Care
