Unmatched breadth and depth of solutions
Miranda´s range offers an unmatched breadth and depth
of solutions for production graphics plus channel playout,
branding and promotion. By using a common set of
modular graphics workflow tools across production and
master control, facilities can benefit from a higher level of
operational efficiency without sacrificing high impact onair
presentation.
Centralized asset management & distribution
Xmedia Suite offers highly efficient, centralized asset management and distribution.
This allows all graphical assets to be ingested once, centrally archived and automatically
moved to a range of graphics devices. Centralization also improves access for operators
to graphical assets across a facility, and between facilities. Rule-based publishing
intelligently distributes the assets, and prevents a wide range of potential on-air
presentation errors.
Workflow tools for production and master control
With the Xmedia Suite, you can use the same workflow tools to create rich and
dynamic template-based graphics for both live production and channel branding
in master control. The result is improved graphics consistency, no duplication of
effort, and a faster time to air. All without compromising creativity.
Effective newsroom integration
In newsroom environments, using Xmedia Suite’s Xnews MOS-compliant plug-in for
newsroom control systems brings a higher level of control over graphics to journalists.
With Xnews, pre-prepared templates and image libraries are used by journalists to
generate the graphics needed to support stories, in just a fraction of the time required
to create original graphics. For news directors, this template-based approach allows
graphics to be created quickly for breaking news with minimal operator intervention,
and the advanced MOS interface simplifies last minute changes to the rundown.
Rich branding and promotional graphics
The combination of Xmedia Suite and the Vertigo XG, or the Imagestore family
of processors, is ideal for the playout of rich channel branding and promotional
graphics. By using ‘smart’ templates that incorporate data-driven graphics,
animations, DVE effects and audio controls, creatives can quickly generate
engaging graphics and packaged promos. Pre-prepared pages can be created
semi-automatically using traffic data, and they can also be produced fully
automatically in real-time with dynamic page creation, using a traffic database
and station automation.
Low cost HD/SD television playout
Miranda’s Xstation ‘channel-in-a-box’ system integrates tightly with the Xmedia
Suite applications, and is designed to reduce the cost of adding extra television
channels, as well as to speed installation and playout processes. Xstation is a single/
dual output, HD/SD playout server with integral graphics and playlist control. It’s
ideal for specialty, regional and sub-channel playout.
Master control switching with integral graphics
Fully featured HD/SD master control with integral rich channel branding is another
key element of the range. The Imagestore family is designed for multi-channel
operation, and can be driven by the widely supported Oxtel protocol. Effective
Xmedia Suite applicatiOn
Creating ´snipe´ promotional graphics
Xmedia Suite is very flexible, and can be adapted to meet
many different working styles. In these examples, the tools
are used to create ´snipe´ graphics, which highlight what´s
‘Coming up next’ or ‘Later’. These promos can be created using
varying levels of process automation.
Quasi-automatic snipe page creation
The most basic level of automating snipe production
is to use the Xbuilder tool for quasi-automatic page
creation. This involves the operator selecting the
snipe graphic text, or values, from pull-down choices
within Xbuilder, which are generated from data from
automation or traffic. This approach has the benefit
of a WYSIWYG preview of the snipe graphic, although
the process is less automated, and therefore slower
for large volume snipe production than a more fully
automated workflow (outlined below).
Semi-automatic snipe page generation
A higher level of automation is provided by semi-automatic
snipe creation, using a spreadsheet from the traffic system to
populate a template with program schedule information.
Xstudio: template authoring
This approach offers faster snipe creation, without sacrificing a
full previewing capability.
automated snipe playout with preview
The most efficient workflow for snipe production is offered by
fully automatic, database-driven dynamic page generation.
This approach can also incorporate a snipe preview to allow an
operator to prevent any errors ahead of airing.
The process starts with preparing a graphic template with data
fields, and associated images in Xstudio. The template is then
loaded onto the Xmedia Server archive, and also onto a Vertigo
XG graphics processor.
Xplay
media event sequencer
Ahead of transmission, the snipe template is automatically
pre-loaded by Xplay, and the data fields are populated by data
from a traffic database, delivered via the Xmedia Server. The
pre-loaded page can be viewed by the operator with Xplay, and
any graphical errors can be prevented from airing, either by
modifying or aborting the graphic. The graphics sequences are
then automatically taken to-air.
typical promo will incorporate an episode specific clip and a repeated show clip, played with an overlay of schedule
information (day, time and channel) and an associated voice-over.
Traditionally, “bag ´n´ tag” promos have been created specially
for each airing, using an editor, but this represents a huge
amount of repetitive work, especially in multi-channel facilities
and for regional affiliates. For instance, a show that airs on
Monday at 8pm across multiple affiliated stations will require
promos for “Monday at 8”, “Tomorrow at 8”, “Tonight at 8”, and
“Next”; all with the local station’s logo and voice-over, along with
adjustments for the local time zone or schedule differences.
A much more efficient way of creating these promos involves live
playout of individual clip, graphics and audio elements, using a
flexible timeline to accommodate variable length clips. By not
pre-rendering, the promos can also be assembled much faster,
With Xmedia Suite, all versions of a
“bag ‘n tag” are generated from a single
playlist, thereby reducing repetitive
work, and the logic built into templates
ensures that they play back correctly
every time.
using traffic data to populate templates. A further advantage of
live playout is the flexibility and customizability of the promo
events and timeline, which can accommodate any schedule
changes at the last minute.
Live playout of “bag ´n´ tag” promos can be performed very
effectively using the Xplay media event sequencer to drive a
Vertigo XG graphics processor. To build a promo, the operator
selects clip and graphics elements and adds metadata to build
a playlist (see opposite). An entire promo sequence can be
recalled by automation with a single recall ID, and Xplay´s
preview capability allows the promos to be checked ahead of
airing to prevent any errors on-air.
Using Xstudio, a graphics operator creates a template with episode specific data fields, and assembles the clips and
supporting graphics needed for the promo on the Xserver archive.
Xbuilder is used to convert the template into graphics pages, using traffic data. The completed pages are loaded to the
Vertigo XG. Xbuilder is also used to create the promo playlist, with selection of the episode clip, the generic show clip, the
name super, and the network logo. The timeline for the individual graphics and clip elements can be fully controlled.
The station automation pre-loads the promo as one event, and Xplay can be used to preview, edit or abort the segment,
ahead of playing on-air.
Upon being triggered by station automation, Xplay drives the graphics sequence to-air from the Vertigo XG processor.

Xmedia Suite applicatiOn
Template-based newsroom graphics
Xmedia Suite is ideal for newsroom environments, and can
be used for fully automated data-driven graphics, as well as
for graphics prepared by journalists to support their stories,
using simple to use templates and image databases.
automated graphics creation by journalists
Using a newsroom graphics automation system like Xmedia Suite results in
a very different graphics workflow from a traditional newsroom, with more
control presented to journalists; it also allows graphics artists to focus on
their creativity.
Instead of creating completed news graphics on-demand, a centralized
graphics team can focus on creating archives of graphics templates and
supporting libraries of images in anticipation of the news requirements.
Xstudio templates do not compromise creativity, and allow a station to offer
high impact, sophisticated graphics.
Xstudio templates are stored on an Xserver archive, and are made accessible
to all the networked workstations used by graphics artists and journalists.
These templates and image libraries can then be used by journalists to
create the news graphics they need to support a story, in just a fraction of
the time it would take to create original graphics.
The transition to this new style of working for journalists is simplified by the
Xnews MOS-compliant plug-in for newsroom control systems, including
AP ENPS and Avid iNews, as well as broadcast automation systems from
vendors such as Omnibus. Using these familiar NRCS interfaces, with easy
to use graphics tools, simplifies the learning curve for journalists, and also
streamlines the workflow, as there is no need to move between applications
while working on a story.
This high level of graphics integration allows journalists to swiftly recall
pre-made templates and simply insert relevant text, keeping them at a
distance from the graphics technology. This allows them to concentrate
on story writing and image selection, without having to learn multiple
new applications. The completed graphics can be easily added to stories
and rundowns by dragging-and-dropping templates into the newsroom
system.
For news directors, the Xmedia Suite’s advanced MOS interface offers
seamless integration with existing newsroom systems, and this allows easier
last minute changes to the rundown. This template-based approach also
means that graphics can be created at high speed at the last minute for
breaking news.
Template selection using Xmedia Suite´s Xnews
NRCS graphics plug-in
Image selection from graphics archive
Adding text to complete the graphic page
data-driven, news graphics
In addition to presenting locally generated news content, Xmedia Suite is
ideal for elegantly managing data-driven graphics, using data-interfacing
to standard news feeds, such as AP, Reuters and SportsTicker, as well as
weather alerts, web data, and other sources of real-time information.
The application’s powerful tools automate both the acquisition of the
news data, and the linking of the data to graphics templates. Multiple
data sources can be handled simultaneously to provide full flexibility with
on-air presentation. Since the data acquisition process is fully automated,
graphics can be generated from live data, and sent to air, with no additional
intervention by newsroom personnel.
The process starts with drag-and-drop template creation, using Xstudio
for layout and formatting, graphics and clip insertion, timeline creation,
and for incorporating broadcast logic. Multiple animation groups can be
created, with animation of a wide set of properties per object, and updatable
keyframes for dynamic control.
The graphics can be created with ‘broadcast logic’ to simplify the process
of adapting the graphics to the data, for instance reflecting financial data
dynamics with arrow directions and colors. Broadcast logic can be based
on actions, lookup tables, and scripts for the most complex data-driven
graphics.
Graphics can be previewed, edited and sequenced using the Xplay media
event sequencer to prevent presentation errors on-air.
