$660,000 for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Hall of Fame Participants Included New Inductees Darrell Green & Art Monk
Saturday night’s Hall of Fame banquet was attended by 600 guests & sports legends who again responded to former
Redskin Bobby Mitchell (right). The celebrity golf tournament concluded 18th year fundraising for cancer research.
A record crowd turned out for the
18th annual Bobby Mitchell/Toyota
Hall of Fame Classic (BMC), sponsored
by the Washington Area
Auto Dealers last weekend, July 12-
13, at Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg,
VA. They came to interact
with 42 Hall of Fame athletes, including
six new inductees, resulting
in a great event for a great cause.
This year’s BMC raised
$660,000 to benefit the Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society (LLS). That
brings total BMC fundraising to battle
these deadly cancers to over $6
million since the event’s inception in
1990. The BMC has raised more
than $4 million since 2000, when
WANADA became involved – a
tribute to the Washington area dealer
community and the leadership of
WANADA Chairman Tamara Darvish
of DARCARS, who has served
as BMC co-chairman for the past
The BMC began Friday morning
with an energetic media breakfast
that resulted in solid media
coverage, including broadcasts on
all four TV networks, along with
numerous radio, newspaper and
internet accounts.
A record crowd came to meet and greet over 40 Hall of Fame greats, pictured here with WANADA leadership (front
row). At right, Emcee Paul Berry with “Patient Escorts” (from left) Nathaniel Justiniano, 7, Brent Kiefer, 7, Hannah
The BMC kicked off with “the best media day ever,” which featured
Al Koken from SportsTalk 980 (left). Above right, new Hall of Fame
inductee Emmitt Thomas is interviewed by CNN TV.
(Continued from page 1)
newsman, Paul Berry ably emceed the evening, and Donna McKelvey of the National Capital Area Chapter of the
LLS reported on the remarkable strides that have been made in finding cures for blood cancer. “The five-year survival
rate has more than tripled in the past 40 years for patients with leukemia, and 86 percent of kids with the most
common form of leukemia survive today,” said McKelvey. “But leukemia still causes more deaths than any other
cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20,” she said.
“So the struggle goes on until we find a cure for all these kids, and that’s where you come in,” Mitchell told the
audience. He credited the BMC’s growing success to his fellow Hall of Famers, who turned out to in large numbers
donate their time and support the tournament, which many have done year after year. Mitchell also had high praise
for the leadership of Ms. Darvish and Mr. Heavner, along with tournament sponsors, including WANADA. He made
special mention of the countless volunteers who “worked tirelessly to put on an event of this magnitude.”
Mitchell then called upon BMC Chairman Emeritus Dick Patterson of RRR Automotive, who came forward and
offered a moving tribute to the recently deceased Joan Hisaoka, formerly of Hisaoka Public Relations and this year’s
recipient of the Excellence in Community Leadership Award. Among her many professional accomplishments, Ms.
Hisaoka was a pivotal member of the BMC planning committee from its founding well into this year. In presenting
the award to Ms. Hisaoka’s brother, Bob Hisaoka, and her husband Marvin Rosskopf, Patterson noted that the hundreds
of people who attended her memorial service in May “came because she was a giver and they loved her for it.”
Tamara Darvish, on behalf of the Darvish family, then presented a $20,000 donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society in Ms. Hisaoka’s memory. Ms. Darvish also thanked Mr. Patterson for getting her and the dealer community
involved in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the BMC.
The star of the evening was Emily Zimmerman, this year’s “Patient Hero,” an 11-year-old from Frederick, MD,
who finished three years of treatment for T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in December. Her three years of treatment
included more than 300 trips to the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, with one 18-month stay in the hospital.
Her parents said they drove more than 100,000 miles over the three year period to be with their daughter during her
treatments.
“I've been doing this for 18 years, but it is feels like five because of what we are fighting for,” said Mitchell. “It is
so important that we raise money for research,” he said. “A girl like Emily makes the athletes look weak because of
her strength.”
Emily, the first girl to be a BMC Patient Hero, thanked everyone for their
support and reflected that the research funded by the Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society “probably saved my life.” She raised a laugh when she said that “While I
don’t know much about football, I know that it’s always on TV from August to
January, but I want to thank you anyway.”
Emily tangibly expressed her appreciation with a batch of brownies she had
baked which were auctioned off for $2,000. She got her own payback for being a
charming and articulate Patient Hero as the recipient of a football signed by the
six new inductees into the Hall of Fame – Darrell Green, Art Monk, Fred Dean,
Emmitt Thomas, Andre Tippett and Gary Zimmerman. Emily’s football was obtained,
however, only after a successful auction bid by Jamie Darvish of DARCARS for $4,000
which was promptly matched with another $4,000 from the signatories of the football.
During the subsequent live auction, John Darvish of DARCARS and his wife Judy
won a “game ball” signed by all of the Hall of Famers with an $8,000 bid. Robert
Bassam of Easterns Automotive similarly was the top bidder for a game ball.
Bobby Mitchell and his wife, Gwen co-narrated a video tribute to the event’s major
sponsors which included: Toyota, DARCARS, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, WANADA,
Costco, AutoTrader.com, American Airlines, Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge, and Lansdowne Resort.
The tournament on Sunday was heavily attended by the public in the gallery and well
covered by the media. When all was said and done, Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson and
his team representing Autotrader.com took top honors with a score of 57. Robertson’s
teammates included David Palmer, Lloyd Hecht, Steve Garcia and Chip Perry. Hall of Famer Gino Marchetti and
his team from BG Products & Services followed in second place with a score of 58. And Pro Football Hall of
Fame inductee Gary Zimmerman and his team from Lansdowne Resort took third place with a score of 59.
Hall of Fame participants for the 2008 Classic included: Bobby Mitchell, Lem Barney, Bobby Bell, Elvin
Bethea, Fred Dean, Joe DeLamielleure, Bill Dudley, Carl Eller, Wayne Embry, Darrell Green, Hal Greer, Ted
