Greeting
The most successful year in the history of ERDINGER
Weissbräu lies behind us. In spite of the global financial
and economic crisis, we still succeeded in getting our
customers excited about ERDINGER’s wheat beer specialties
and were one of the few German beer brands to
achieve growth in 2009. On top of this, there was also a
special honor in store for me at the end of the year. I was
able to celebrate my 70th birthday together with over
1,000 guests, including friends and business partners
from around the world, as well as employees and celebrities.
My family and I were extremely moved by the
unique atmosphere of this party, the numerous personal
good wishes and the special presents and souvenirs. We
will never forget the many touching moments – and
would therefore like to express our sincere gratitude!
The new year got off to a great start with a further highlight.
At the Winter Olympics in Vancouver we were able
to generate additional awareness for our brand as partner
of the Deutsche Haus. We took great pleasure in
celebrating the success of our athletes by raising a glass
of freshly poured ERDINGER with guests from around
the world.
Best regards from Erding,
CELEBRATION
Congratulations from around the world for Werner Brombach
ERDINGER owner Werner Brombach celebrated
his 70th birthday with a memorable party and
over 1,000 guests. Among them were many good
friends from around the world, as well as brewery
employees and leading personalities from the
world of business and politics.
There was plenty of praise from all sides for the
birthday boy. The President of the Bavarian Brewers’
Association called Werner Brombach “one
of the giants of his profession”. And Bavaria’s former
Minister President Günther Beckstein called
“Bräu” (Werner Brombach’s nickname) a true
friend, stating: “Your wheat beer is perfect;
ERDINGER Weissbräu has shaped people’s image
of Bavaria around the world”. There were some
light-hearted comments from soccer legend
Franz Beckenbauer, who told of Brombach’s
spontaneous surprise visits, but added: “He’s
always welcome”. He also told the audience
about a trip to the end of the world in Cabo San
Lucas on the Baja California in Mexico: “There
was nothing there, except of course ERDINGER
Weissbier”.
Page 4
The party was held “at home” in the brewery’s
loading hall – and many a guest is likely to have
rubbed their eyes in disbelief at the sight of the
huge screens displaying an impressive Bavarian
alpine panorama. The mountain scenery was
complemented by the “Urweisse hut”, which together
with the richly decorated tables created a
unique backdrop for the birthday gala.
Above all, however, it was the emotional moments
which left an indelible impression on the guests.
In the course of the evening, it became increasingly
apparent just how important the brewery’s
employees are for Werner Brombach. Not only
did he invite all 480 current employees and pensioners,
but also stressed: “You are my honorary
guests. I owe my growth and success to these
people. I would like to express my sincere gratitude
for this”. There was also a clear sense of just
how much the boss means to his employees. For
example, the speech made by the company’s two
Works Council chairmen was a particularly special
moment. They presented Werner Brombach
with a glass globe on which every country was
marked in which ERDINGER Weissbier is available,
signed by all members of staff.
There were also moving speeches by the
brewery’s two Managing Directors. “We have
always been able to rely on you,” said Josef
Westermeier, and added: “We cannot imagine
anyone better”. Peter Liebert reported lightheartedly
about Werner Brombach’s passion for
his wheat beer and his absolute obsession for
quality – which often means receiving phone
calls from his boss at any time of day or night and
from every corner of the world. They presented
him with a unique present: an original piece of
the Berlin Wall with the brewery’s logo added by
an unknown graffiti sprayer. Werner Brombach,
who had always hoped for reunification, was
visibly moved by this reminder of Germany’s
recent history. He’d actually asked not to receive
any presents, but for people to make a donation
to Erding’s care facilities for the elderly. However,
an exception had to be made for such a highly
symbolic souvenir of a past era. And a further
exception had to be made for the town’s former
priest, who presented him with a certificate from
Pope Benedict XVI.
One huge surprise was saved until near the end
of the evening, when Werner Brombach’s former
classmates took to the stage. The members
of the school’s former jazz band gave a special
performance for their ex-bandleader – and
Werner Brombach quickly demonstrated that
rhythm was in his blood by spontaneously conducting
the band.
A whole array of people helped ensure that the
evening’s celebrations in Erding were a complete
success – from entertainers, to celebrity chef
Alfons Schuhbeck to the many organizers behind
the scenes. However, it was the highly personal
atmosphere with numerous emotional moments
which made the event so unforgettable. Only a
truly special person like Werner Brombach can
turn a gala with over 1,000 guests into such a
warm and cozy evening.
Soccer legend Franz Beckenbauer and
his wife Heidi have long been close friends
of brewery owner Werner Brombach.
Kurzvita
Werner Brombach
Werner Brombach was born in Erding
in December 1939. After graduating in
both beer-brewing and business administration,
he took over the private brewery
from his father in 1975. That was
the start of a major success story, as
Werner Brombach had set himself the
target of making his wheat beer not only
famous throughout Germany, but also
around the world. Within a few years, he
succeeded in putting his brewery in top
position. Today, ERDINGER Weissbier
has come to symbolize Bavarian lifestyle
and enjoyment around the world.
ERDINGER LOCATION
„O’zapft is“ in Madrid
The flair of Munich’s annual beer festival 365
days per year – that’s what Madrid’s new “Oktoberfest”
restaurant offers inhabitants and visitors
of the Spanish capital. Friendly waitresses
dressed in traditional costumes serve Bavarian
specialties in an atmosphere straight out of
Munich. Inside the restaurant and its indoor beer
Relaxed Bavarian-style enjoyment at the “Oktoberfest” in Madrid.
The restaurant is located in one of Madrid’s largest
and most beautiful shopping malls, the Centro
Comercial Principe Pio. Formerly one of
Madrid’s most important train stations, the historic
and lovingly restored building is now home to
113 shops on three floors, as well as a ninescreen
cinema, and numerous restaurants and
cafés. Access to the site is guaranteed by its surviving
rail connection, a Metro and a bus station.
ERDINGER AROUND THE WORLD
OUR IMPORTERS
Skål auf in Norwegen
The Kingdom of Norway stretches over an
impressive area of 385,199 square kilometers.
And ERDINGER Weissbier is served even in Ny-
Ålesund – the northernmost village on the island
of Spitzbergen and at the same time the world’s
Arve Røys Stranden (3rd from left), owner of Strag AS, with his team in Norway.
most northerly settlement. This is in spite of the
fact that Ny-Ålesund can only be reached by air in
winter and by ship in the ice-free periods. We
owe our tight-knit and far-stretching distribution
network in Norway to Strag AS, which has been
and supplied specially by Bavarian craftsmen, the
“Oktoberfest” gives its customers a true sense of
Bavarian lifestyle and relaxed enjoyment. The
restaurant is located on the third floor and is
open Monday to Wednesday from 12:30pm to
midnight and from Thursday to Sunday from
12:30pm to 1:00am.
Whether for a quick snack or a traditional Bavarian
evening – the “Oktoberfest” team and
ERDINGER Weissbräu extend a warm welcome
to all guests.
importing ERDINGER to the country since 1997.
During this 13-year cooperation, Arve Røys
Stranden, the owner of Strag AS, has succeeded
in positioning ERDINGER’s beers as the most
popular wheat beer specialties on the Norwegian
market.
The Norwegian beer market is dominated by the
two major breweries: Carlsberg-Ringnes and
Hansa-Borg. At just 51 liters per head, the
country’s annual beer consumption is one of the
lowest in Europe. In 2009, a total of 2.65 million
hectoliters of beer were sold in Norway. Imported
beers accounted for around 6 percent of this
total. Sales of ERDINGER Weissbier, however, is
making strong progress – with an increase of 25
percent over 2008. ERDINGER’s wheat beer specialties
are marketed in Norway’s major towns
and cities, as well as in holiday regions – including
the world’s most northern village.
ERDINGER AT THE IBU-WORLDCUP
Non-Alcoholic
on track to biathlon success
The literal translation of the Greek word biathlon
is “a sporting contest comprising two disciplines”,
and that’s exactly what the professional
biathletes of Team ERDINGER Non-Alcoholic are
successfully demonstrating in the current IBU
World Cup races. Team member Michi Greis has
already picked up four medals: at the World Cup
race in Hochfilzen, Austria, Greis won bronze
with the German men’s team. The Olympic champion
scored the same result at the World Cup
race in Oberhof, Germany, and also came second
in the 10 kilometer sprint. In Ruhpolding, Germany,
Greis was third to sprint across the line
after 10 kilometers.
And ERDINGER Non-Alcoholic was a firm fixture
at all events. Once again ERDINGER Weissbräu is
a premium partner of this season’s IBU World
Cup and is not only continuing its previous commitment,
but expanding it. With Miriam Gössner
and Lukas Hofer, Team ERDINGER Non-Alcoholic
has been strengthened by two promising and
talented young biathletes. In addition to the
excellent performance of our team members,
ERDINGER Weissbräu’s successful export strategy
at the various international sporting venues is
being promoted by top perimeter advertising
along the routes, branding on starting numbers
and of course the bright blue racing caps worn
by Team ERDINGER Non-Alcoholic’s biathletes.
ERDINGER Non-Alcoholic’s brand presence is
also being strengthened by TV presentation on
Germany’s public broadcasting channels as well
Page 8
as classic spots during biathlon events. At the
events themselves, our Export team ensures a
strong and compelling local presence for the isotonic
thirst-quencher by providing incentives in
the VIP tents and serving ERDINGER Non-Alcoholic
in the sports and special guest areas.
As a result, we’ve been able to strengthen and
expand our existing customer relations in Östersund
(Sweden), Hochfilzen (Austria), Pokljuka
(Slovenia), Antholz (Italy), Oberhof and Ruhpolding
(Germany). ERDINGER Non-Alcoholic will
also be demonstrating its isotonic, vitamin-rich
and calorie-reduced qualities to customers,
guests and athletes at the remaining events in
Kontiolahti (Finland), Oslo Holmenkollen (Norway)
and Khanty-Mansijsk (Russia).
A crowd full of biathlon enthusiasts
in Östersund, Sweden.
Magdalena Neuner put in a masterful performance in Antholz
to win gold, while Ivan Tcherezov took top spot on the
winner’s rostrum for his sprint in Östersund. Both athletes
not only enjoyed taking first place but also taking a
champion’s swig from the legendary ERDINGER 3-liter
glass.
WINTER SPORTS
at the Winter-Olympics
Germany’s athletes won a total of 30 medals at the Winter Olympics and fi nished second in the medals table. Magdalena Neuner
(center) won two gold medals and one silver, while Simone Hauswald (right) won bronze twice.
Every four years, the world looks forward to the
next Olympic Winter Games. That time came
again in early 2010 – the 21st Olympic Games
were held in Vancouver, Canada. 5,500 athletes
from 80 nations gave their best in the fight for the
prestigious gold, silver and bronze medals.
The inukshuk, an ancient stone landmark, was the logo
of the 21st Winter Olympics.
This was already the fourth Olympics at which
ERDINGER Weissbräu was represented by members
of its Team ERDINGER Non-Alcoholic. In
2004, swimmer Thomas Rupprath took part in
the Summer Games in Athens and won silver in
the 4x100 meters medley relay. There was a veritable
shower of medals in winter 2006, when
biathlete Michi Greis won three golds and teammate
Andi Birnbacher took the silver in Turin,
Italy. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing,
Team ERDINGER Non-Alcoholic was represented
by Erich Winkler in the Paralympic Games. The
handicapped cyclist put in an excellent performance
in all his events and was unlucky to miss
out on a medal. Five winter athletes from Team
ERDINGER Non-Alcoholic qualified for Vancouver:
the biathletes Michi Greis, Andi Birnbacher
and Lukas Hofer, the cross-country skier Miriam
Gössner and slalom specialist Felix Neureuther.
The ski and sliding events were held 130 kilometers
away from Vancouver, in Whistler. In the
second week of the Games, the youngest member
of Team ERDINGER Non-Alcoholic, Miriam Gössner,
won Olympic silver in the cross-country
relay event. Gössner was the third to enter the
race and improved the team’s position from sixth
to third, playing a pivotal role in helping win silver
for the women’s relay team. Felix Neureuther
can also be satisfied with his performance at the
Olympics after finishing eighth in the giant slalom
– the best result of his career so far in this event.
After a hard day of events, athletes, officials and
media representatives all met in the traditional
official hospitality center of the German Olympic
Sports Federation (DOSB), the so-called “German
House”. Due to the considerable distances
between the two sporting venues in Vancouver
and Whistler, the “German House” was represented
at both locations. In the beautiful scenery of
the Nicklaus North Golf Club, the “German House
Whistler” offered 400 square meters of space for
press conferences, receptions, live broadcasts of
Germany’s public stations ARD and ZDF from a
specially created TV studio, and for relaxing get-
VANCOUVER 2010
togethers with the athletes. In cooperation with
the Bavarian Tourist Board, the “German House
Whistler” was decorated in classic Bavarian style.
One part of the “German House” – and a very
special meeting place not only for German athletes
– was the “Kufenstüberl”. In the style of a
cozy mountain hut, the “Stüberl” provided winter
sports enthusiasts with a typically relaxed Bavarian
atmosphere to help them feel at home so far
away from Germany. Guests were served such
delicacies as “Leberkäs” and “Weisswurst” supplied
by a German butcher in Vancouver, as well
as fresh pretzels and the classic pancake specialty
“Kaiserschmarrn”. The friendly service staff
were dressed in traditional Bavarian costumes
and served refreshing ERDINGER Weissbier specialties.
Three Bavarian musicians from Berchtesgaden
ensured that the guests were in the right
mood and provided a real “home-from-home”
atmosphere.
The Olympic fl ame burnt in Vancouver for 17 days. The next
Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi (Russia) in 2014.
ERDINGER Weissbräu enjoyed a strong presence
as partner of the “German House” in Vancouver
and Whistler, as well as supplying ERDINGER
Weissbier to visitors of the “Austrian House” in
Whistler Mountain.
Even after the Winter Olympics left town, nobody
need do without their ERDINGER Weissbier in
Whistler. At the exclusive hotel “Delta Whistler
Village Suites”, for example, there is the “Elephant
& Castle” pub where guests can enjoy fish
'n' chips and ERDINGER Weissbier on tap.
ERDINGER is also served at numerous outlets in
Vancouver, such as the four top locations of the
famous “Joey’s Restaurants” chain.
