the whcle construction industry to the ottention 

of the public. The publicity hos been porticulorly 

bod since loss of life hos occurred in oll 

of the occidents publicized. These items might 

be newsworthy but they do much to hurt oll 

of the construction industry. 

It is more thon oppropriote thot The Americon 

lnstitute of Architects hove chosen, "The 

Quest For Quolity in Architect,rre" os the 

theme for their onnuol meeting next Moy in 

Miomi, Florido. lt might be well for oll cf us 

to use os our theme, "The Quest For Quolity in 

All Phoses of Construction." 

All licensed Architects, Engineers ond Controctors 

hove o responsibility to work for more 

strict legislotion, thot ultimotely will result in 

more positive stotutes to prctect the generol 

public. lt is omozing the number of projects 

in oll phoses of the construction industry thot 

qre corried to completion by persons not properfy 

quolified to corry out this work. 

ln mony instonces the cost of o given project 

is the reoson for some groups to "cut corners". 

This only brings to light more forcefully the 

old oxiom thot, "You only get whot you poy 

for." ln some coses ond pcssibly oll instonces 

where humon life hos been lost, this "cornercutting" 

business hos resulted in these terrible 

trogedies. 

As professionol men ond women we owe it 

to society to insist on more strict licensing lows 

ond the power to enforce them. lt is our 

responsibility os professi.cnols to do whot we 

con to protect the public, in spite of o few of 

them. Selfish personol goin of o fovored few 

is whot must be stopped. 

The stote legisloture will be in session sho:tly, 

so now is the time for Architects, Engineers 

ond Controctors to toke stock cf some bod 

existing conditions, regroup their collective 

forces ond do something constructive to insure 

"Quolity" in oll phoses of the construction 

industry from drowing boords to the finished 

prcduct. 

Nothing good con be "Cheop", but mony 

things good con be "inexpensive." There is o 

difference. Thot is where quotified professionols 

such os ourselves con reolly render on 

opprecioted service to our society todoy.

resulting in poor sightlines from the sides of the
