Message from the Dean 

Dear Colleagues, 

i am extremely proud to report that the 2008-2009 academic 

year was extremely good for the University of Tennessee College 

of pharmacy, with many achievements realized in spite of the economic 

conditions all of us are facing. 

The accreditation Council for pharmacy Education (aCpE) 

visited the college in fall 2008 and awarded us with a six-year accreditation. 

my congratulations to the college self-study committee 

chaired by James Eoff. Thanks to all for a job well done. Our 

next scheduled audit is fall 2015. 

The college graduated 161 pharmacists in may. We are very 

confident in the abilities of the class of 2009, and we know they will 

make a difference in the care of their patients across our state and 

nation throughout their careers. in this graduating class, 67 percent 

are now practicing community pharmacy in independent and chain sites. Twenty-four percent of this 

class chose to do residencies, and this is below our average over previous years, but i believe this is a result 

of our economy rather than their desires to pursue postgraduate specialty training. We are confident 

that our graduates will excel in whatever practice they choose. 

UT College of pharmacy students continued to be recognized with competitive national awards this 

past year. The apha/academy of Student pharmacists chapter continued their tradition of excellence 

in receiving both the national immunization award and the national patient Care award at the apha 

Convention in 2009. The UT phi Delta Chi chapter again brought home the Emory W. Thurston Cup, 

symbolic of being the number one chapter in the nation. This is the fraternity’s second consecutive Thurston 

Cup and their fourth in the past seven years – quite a remarkable achievement! Congratulations to 

the aSp and phi Delta Chi members and advisors for your achievements, not just this year but for every 

year. 

This year was the culmination of the national presidential terms of apha president Tim Tucker and 

APhA/ASP President Brent Reed. As stated previously, we believe this is the first time ever that both 

these national offices have been held by an alumnus and a student from the same pharmacy school, and 

we’re extremely proud of their dedication and leadership of our profession on a national scale. in addition, 

UT faculty member Dr. lawrence m. Brown was elected to the apha Board of Trustees and joins me 

as a trustee. 

national honors were also bestowed on pharmaceutical Sciences Chair Dr. Duane miller in his receiving 

the prestigious aaCp volwiler award for research, while Dr. Shelley White-means and i won 

the aaCp Rufus lyman award for our publication detailing the economic impact of the UT College of 

pharmacy. additionally, Dr. miller was inducted into the medicinal Chemistry hall of Fame. 

There were several administrative changes made during this academic year. Dr. Stephanie phelps 

was named associate dean for academic affairs when Dr. George Wood requested a return to his laboratory 

and classroom full time. Dr. Bernd meibohm was appointed associate dean for Graduate programs

and Basic Research, and Dr. David Rogers was appointed associate 

dean for Translational Research, splitting the many 

previous responsibilities of Dr. Duane miller who had served 

as chair of pharmaceutical Sciences as well as associate dean 

for Research and Graduate programs. my sincere thanks go 

to Drs. Wood and miller for their dedication and hard work 

in their previous roles. These three new appointees have hit 

the ground running, and we look forward to working with 

them in their new duties. 

Construction of our new building on the UThSC campus 

in memphis continues to progress extremely well. We 

are told that we will be able to occupy it in summer 2010. We 

have received several commitments from alumni and friends 

for naming rights to areas of the building, but we ask you to 

consider naming a specific area to honor yourself, your family, 

your class, your business, a faculty mentor or something 

else meaningful to you. We have also made proposals to several 

organizations and foundations for substantial amounts 

to complete and fully furnish the new building. Don’t forget 

to follow construction progress on our building webcam at 

www.uthsc.edu/pharmacy. 

One negative impact of the economy has been to reduce 

the number of students admitted this fall. Because of funding 

and current manpower needs for pharmacists, we altered 

our entering class enrollment to 165 from our original goal of 

200 students. although our applicant pool remains strong, 

we believe this is a prudent decision, and we retain the ability 

to alter that goal in future years as the economy improves. 

i offer my sincere appreciation to UT and UThSC administration 

for their support during 2008-2009. as an alumnus 

of the UT College of pharmacy, i am extremely proud of 

our students, faculty, alumni and the University of Tennessee. 

Our alumni continue their generous and encouraging 

support, and our students’ achievements in the classroom 

and beyond are exemplary.

Clinical Pharmacy 

Faculty members of the UT Department of Clinical pharmacy are at the forefront 

in teaching, research, clinical care and public service. The vast majority of 

teaching pharmacy students in their last three years of the curriculum is delivered 

by Clinical pharmacy faculty, including classroom instruction and 581 rotation 

months (11.2 rotations per faculty) by full-time faculty during 2008-2009. new 

course development was substantial in 2008 with several new rotation offerings 

and didactic electives created. Teaching remains our largest percentage effort, 

with significant growth in the amount of faculty time devoted to research and 

service. For their teaching efforts, Drs. Robert parker and heather Eppert were 

recipients of the UThSC Student Government association Excellence in Teaching 

awards in 2009. additionally, there are 36 postdoctoral residency and fellowship 

positions located across Tennessee precepted by Department of Clinical pharmacy 

full- and part-time faculty members. 

in 2007, reports indicated that the UT Department of Clinical pharmacy was 

the second most published clinical department in the nation, with more than 120 

peer-reviewed manuscripts published. noteworthy is that in 2008-2009, this number 

increased to more than 160 peer-reviewed manuscripts, not including more 

than 60 book chapters. The department continues to focus on the development of 

clinical pharmaceutical scientists, with moves of laboratories to the new UThSC 

Cancer Research Building and the Children’s Foundation Research Center at le 

Bonheur Children’s medical Center. These moves will encourage collaboration 

across traditional disciplines and between other colleges on the UThSC campus. 

Significantly, clinical scientists Drs. Terreia Jones and Collin Hovinga won the first 

competitive grants awarded by the campus Clinical and Translational Science institute 

(CTSi). The department is also home to three endowed professorships and 

one state-funded Center of Excellence, which has had renewable funding for 24 

consecutive years. more than 30 funded grants were obtained in 2008-2009. 

approximately 1.2 million people are served annually by the department’s 

programs through the Drug information Center, immunization programs and 

through an extensive network of patient care services throughout Tennessee. patient 

populations served during the year include pediatrics, critical care/trauma/ 

nutrition, medicine, community, ambulatory care, women’s health, emergency 

medicine and surgery patients. in addition, more than 10,000 pharmacists enrolled 

in the college’s continuing education programs, and 5,000 participated in 

workshops and other educational events this year. 

The department, through Dr. Steve Foster, is central to the State of Tennessee’s 

pharmacist response to the h1n1 virus, the coordination of UT student pharmacists 

in immunization and our representation on the national advisory Committee 

on immunization practices (aCip) as the only pharmacy representative.

Pharmaceutical Sciences 

members of the UT Department of pharmaceutical Sciences 

were most productive during the 2008-2009 academic year. Our 

23 full-time faculty members mentored a total of 53 graduate students, 

graduating seven with advanced degrees. additionally, 

there were 12 pharmD/phD Dual Degree students and nine postdoctoral 

trainees who were mentored by our faculty. 

Our pharmaceutical Sciences faculty produced 75 publications, 

17 book chapters, 72 abstracts, made 44 invited presentations 

and submitted 24 patent applications during the year. in 

addition, our faculty made 72 grant applications, and were 

awarded 20 nih grants, one U.S. Department of Defense grant, 

and 15 contracts. an nih grant proposal has been submitted to 

support the completion of the two upper floors of the new pharmacy 

building in memphis. This grant will essentially complete 

the build-out of these two laboratory floors. 

Several honors were awarded to pharmaceutical Sciences 

faculty members, including two of the highest campus student 

government association teaching awards to Drs. atul Shukla and 

Ram mahato. Department Chair Dr. Duane miller’s long and 

productive career was recognized nationally as he was inducted 

into the medicinal Chemistry hall of Fame and received aaCp’s 

volwiler Research achievement award. Drs. Shelly White-means 

and Dick Gourley were awarded aaCp’s Rufus lyman award 

for the outstanding paper of the year. Dr. l.B. Brown was elected 

to the apha Board of Trustees, joining Dr. Gourley on that board 

as UT College of pharmacy faculty members. vice Chair Dr. isaac 

Donkor was named UThSC College of Graduate health Sciences 

associate dean for health Career programs in addition to his current 

duties. 

Drs. mahato, Richard lee and John Buolamwini serve on 

seven nih study sections, while Drs. mahato and Bob moore 

serve on two U.S. Department of Defense study sections. Drs. 

Shukla, vivian loveless and laura Thoma attracted gifts totaling 

$126,000 for equipment and scholarships during the 2008-2009 

year. 

We look forward to the 2009-2010 academic year and optimizing 

our laboratories and other space with the occupation of 

our new College of pharmacy building on the memphis campus.

On Saturday, February 28, 2009, Memphis experienced its biggest snowfall in 40 years. More 

than 5 inches of snow covered the campus.
