COMMODORE’S REPORT 

The last issue of Off the Wind closely 

followed our moving into the new clubhouse 

in July, 2009. It now seems a distant 

memory as so much has happened around 

the Club in the intervening ten months. 

Off the Wind forms a vital part of the written history of this 

club, so I want to open this column by congratulating the 

management and staff on their achievement of a most 

successful ‘launch phase’ of the new building. I can’t 

imagine that we could have asked for much more; the 

offer in the Members’ Bar is first-class, the Harbour View 

Restaurant has received critical acclaim and a very high rate 

of patronage from members and the wider community and 

the function business has got off to a most promising start 

in both forward bookings and the quality of the product 

provided. Were it not for a strong management team, under 

the leadership of our CEO, Richard Hewett, the result might 

have been far less satisfactory. 

But the most pleasing part has been the degree to which 

the members have embraced the new facilities. The 

patronage in the Members’ Bar and in the Harbour View 

Restaurant has been wonderful and it gives all those 

of us who were involved in the planning and delivery of 

the building an enormous amount of satisfaction to see 

members enjoying the new surroundings. 

Turning to our on-water activities: in December, we again 

hosted the first leg of the ISAF World Cup. Of course, this 

was the first with the new facilities and the response from 

overseas and interstate visitors was extremely positive, not

only in relation to the new building, but also in regard to the 

quality of the event, both on-water and off-water. Many 

members contribute long hours as volunteers to make this a 

successful event and our thanks to you all. 

Over the Christmas/New Year period, our sailors enjoyed 

considerable success in ocean races and national 

championships. At the risk of singling out one boat, I must 

mention the second overall placing of Wicked (Mike and 

Mark Welsh) in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. In early 

February, I had the pleasure of hosting ‘Welcome Home 

Drinks’ in the Members’ Bar to recognise those who 

achieved a podium finish over the holiday period. It was a 

great celebration and it was good to see the range of ages 

represented, from the crews in the International Cadets 

through to some of our veteran sailors. 

More important than race results is offering members 

activities in which they want to participate on a week by 

week basis. Our keelboat fleets remain strong, our Off The 

Beach division is strong and growing and participation in 

Recreational Boating events, from the fishing competition to 

cruises in company, are attracting good numbers. 

Over the last few months, your committee has been working 

on a strategic plan for the Club, focussing on what we need to 

achieve over the next five to ten years to keep Sandringham 

Yacht Club at the forefront of the sport in Victoria. We look 

forward to sharing this with members as it evolves and 

in particular, ensuring that members of the various subcommittees 

understand the direction of the Club and have 

‘buy in’ to the process. As a part of the planning process, 

we have developed a comprehensive governance guide, 

incorporating terms of reference for the various committees.

By far, the most pressing strategic matter is the redevelopment 

of the Off The Beach area. To say the least, this area is an 

eyesore but, more importantly, is not in keeping with the 

image of SYC, especially when you consider that, for most 

newcomers, this area is their first contact with the Club. At the 

moment, we are in the process of applying for a government 

grant under the Industry Skills Centre programme to assist 

with the development of this precinct. We are making this 

application in conjunction with William Angliss Institute with a 

view to providing training classroom facilities for hospitality and 

water recreation students during the week and at the same 

time, provide first class training facilities for our Off The Beach 

division and our Boating Academy on weekends and during 

the holiday periods. If we are successful with the application, 

we will have the immediate challenge of funding the $750,000 

club contribution. If we are not successful, we have a clear 

vision and fully developed plans and we will have to work out a 

way to fund the entire project. This is something that we have 

to do. We didn’t get to where we are today by shrinking from 

challenges over the past ten years or so and this is just another 

challenge! 

Nothing is more important to the long-term success of 

the Club than attracting new entrants into the sport, both 

kids and adults. With so many dinghy clubs struggling to 

attract members, we are not going to have the benefit of our 

traditional ‘crèche’; we are going to have to attract and nurture 

new entrants ourselves. Of course, physical facilities are only 

part of the answer. With some judicious reorganisation of the 

Boating Department, we are in the process of appointing 

a Head Coach and Off The Beach Sailing Coordinator to 

nurture new entrants from beginner courses, through to active 

participation in club sailing in dinghies and keelboats. We have 

demanding goals in this area. In five years, we want 20% of 

our membership to have some sort of involvement in OTB 

activities, so this appointment is part of gearing up towards 

that objective. Or, as Lou Abrahams so eloquently put it in his 

note in this year’s membership booklet,”the tackers of today 

are the champions of tomorrow”. 

Looking ahead, 2011 is the centenary of Sandringham 

Yacht Club and a sub-committee has started work on 

planning a programme of events for the year. I don’t want 

to go into detail here, but I am sure that there will be heavy 

ISAF spectators enjoying a gorgeous Melbourne day on the

demand for a lot of the events, so I would encourage you 

to make bookings as soon as the dates and events are 

promulgated to avoid disappointment. As a part of our 

celebrations, we are planning a SYC Centenary history. 

This will be a coffee-table style book which will not only 

document our history, but set the tone for the Club as we 

move into our next hundred years. 

Another celebration in 2011 will be the fiftieth anniversary of 

the SYC Metung Easter Regatta. We are planning an event 

for Easter Saturday, 23 April 2011 and if past juniors and 

past parents are interested in attending, I suggest that you 

start thinking about accommodation now, as the pressure 

for accommodation in Metung is growing year by year, 

particularly in the key holiday periods. 

We have much to celebrate and much to look forward to at 

this great club. I hope you enjoy this edition of Off the Wind 

and I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

This is my first Off the Wind article since taking 

on the role of Club Captain Sail and time 

has simply flown by. One element of the role 

that I particularly enjoy and take pride in is 

communicating the successes of SYC boats in 

the various major yachting events around the 

country and there are many. 

The Christmas period is dominated by the major ocean 

races and various State / National Championships. SYC’s

It is also pleasing to see SYC boats performing well 

interstate. In late 2009, Nick Bartels’ Terra Firma showed 

the Sydney-siders a thing or two by winning the Sydney 

Short Ocean Racing Championships in IRC Division 2. 

Back in the Bay and SYC boats were again successful at this 

year’s Audi Victoria Week, one of the year’s largest and most 

popular regattas. Congratulations to the following SYC keel 

boats and their crews for their podium places: Challenge, 

Dark Energy, Dionysos , Forzado, Make My Jay, Scarlet 

Runner, Stitched Up, Terra Firma, Veloce and Young Ones. 

Closer to home, there has been some great racing in the 

various SYC series so far this Summer. Brian Barnes is 

doing a fantastic job as handicapper for the Wednesday 

Wonders series, which continues to grow in popularity with 

a strong fleet every week. Our Thursday evening twilight 

racing also continues to be popular and is an excellent way 

to introduce new members and guests into sailing. Sundays 

are a popular alternative event for those that are seeking a 

less-serious racing format on a weekend. 

For our Saturday program, in response to member 

feedback we continue to offer a variety of racing with the 

Club Marine Series, long distance fixed marks racing, 

SYC-based aggregate races, teams race, short-course 

sprint races, slalom race, long distance passage race, 

overnight race, 2-handed race and so on. 

One initiative that will gain focus moving forward is to hold 

our racing in close proximity to our magnificent clubhouse. 

SYC is unique in the Bay in our ability to bring keelboat 

racing close to the Club for increased spectator interest. 

Feedback on these style courses has been very positive from 

participants and spectators alike, so your Sail Committee will 

continue to explore greater avenues for this initiative. 

This year’s program has seen a greater level of interaction with 

our colleagues at Royal Brighton Yacht Club. A number of races 

have been combined which not only relieves some pressure for 

our race management volunteers, but also increases the fleet 

size providing additional competition to our racing. 

The keelboat sailing program is constantly under review and I 

encourage members to provide their feedback to myself and 

Sail Committee on your ideas for improvement. We try to 

listen and respond to what you want, balancing the differing 

opinions as best we can to provide a balanced program.

RECREATIONAL BOATING REPORT 

Welcome to our summer edition of 

Off The Wind and what a summer it was. 

The 2009 SYC fishing comp (November 8 th ) 

exceeded my expectations with 41 boats 

entered. We were blessed with a warm day 

and not too much wind early on. Mother 

nature also played a big part as the snapper 

were abundant amongst our keen fisherman 

during October 2009. As you may recall we 

had a late start to the season (08-09) last 

time around with poor results so it looks like 

we will schedule November again as a date 

for 2010. 

It was great to see Ross Toy busy with Ian Boon’s scales 

at weigh in. This time around with over 25 snapper testing 

the scales. Many thanks for your help guys. 

Largest snapper and our competition winner was Gary 

Cadd aboard Alex Dawson’s boat with a 5.37 kg fish. 

Second largest snapper was the old fox himself Ralph 

White aboard his new boat aptly named Marriage Guidance 

(I am sure Tina can explain the boat’s name) with a 4.92 kg 

fish. Ralph and his fishing buddy Peter Burns had to front 

the stewards afterwards, as it was thought that something 

real fishy was going on during the competition! (See picture 

that was taken at 8.00 am). 

Speaking of something fishy, one of our new members 

Rob Hanke aboard his 12m yacht ‘Dalliance’ 

weighed in the most fish conveniently packed in 

polystyrene fish boxes with ice. One of his crew Dale 

Minchington took out third spot with a 4.30kg fish. 

As always, it’s great to see our members bring their kids or 

grandkids along. Our trophy sponsor Wayne Read entered 

his grandson James in the comp and he was rewarded 

for his 3.12 kg snapper. Also as a novelty but not to be 

sneezed at, young Miles aboard Ewan Lipman’s yacht, 


caught a .74 kg flathead. After lunch our Executive Chef, 

Kol, took over the BBQ to show us how to cook some 

smaller snapper. This proved a great hit with our members 

with the recipe on our website, thanks Kol. 

All our winners took home some great ‘Jarvis Walker’ rods 

and reels. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our 

sponsors for helping to make the SYC fishing competition 

a success again; Jarvis Walker for all our main prizes; 

Wayne Read Motors for our perpetual trophy; David Flood 

Marketing for our hats; R Marine Jacksons for helping 

provide our BBQ lunch along with SYC and staff. 

As you will be aware, the Recreationl Boating guest speaker 

nights are now scheduled to be held bi-monthly as opposed 

to monthly. This new scheduling has been well received by 

members as reflected in the higher attendance ends. 

I hope those members that attended our summer picnic raft 

up enjoyed their day, so it looks like we will have to keep 

this on the calendar for next year. 

The 2010 Seafood fest/fisho night turned out to be a real 

success. We had 198 members and guests sample a 

sumptuous seafood spread. Our Executive Chef, Kol, really 

turned it on with amazing flavours and delights throughout 

the whole evening. 

Our decision to hire the Clip Clop Club for our musical 

entertainment proved to be a real winner. These guys have 

been playing together for many years and enthralled the 

whole audience for forty five minutes. 

After the main course of ‘seared yellow fin tuna steak’ we all 

paused to take a breath and a quick chat to fellow members. 

Next up on stage was Ben Price’s return by audience 

request but this year he was Bruce McAvaney. We all waited 

for something SPECIAL and there it was, ‘Cometti- isms’. 

“The Magpies ought to be kicking themselves right now, but 

with their luck, they’d probably miss”. Dennis will never be 

the same on Friday night football after Bruce literally took 

him apart. All part of the act to make our audience laugh 

and they did. A new idea then emerged as Bruce invited 

some of our guests to talk boats. Yes ‘on the jetty with

Bruce McAvaney’. First guest up was Greg Stephens to 

talk about the ‘no name Riv’. Chris Carlile was grilled about 

a slight mishap in the harbour. Steve Richards relived his 

delusional time on a late night watch taking Quells and 

Commodore Philip Burn answered questions regarding 

budgie smugglers and Easter Bunnies. 

The live raffle created enough interest to send our winners, 

Ron and Britt Van Pelt to Hamilton Island for four days fishing. 

At one stage their prize was sending them off the breakwater 

in a little dinghy and fending for themselves. Seriously, we 

raised a few extra dollars to help out ‘Off The Beach’ and 

their refurbishment fund. Thanks for digging deep. 

Is it surprising to hear that we still had members calling on 

the day to book a table? Let’s face it, we all leave some 

things to the last minute, but I did give fair warning, book 

early or miss out. I am sorry for those that missed a great 

night but we have to let the kitchen know at least three days 

out for catering. 

The Commodore was kind enough to add a few words 

of thanks to all concerned at the end of the night. By all 

accounts everyone enjoyed the night and I was particularly 

pleased to hear the Commodore announce “the Seafood 

night is here to stay and definitely a club event for members 

to enjoy each year”.

OFF THE BEACH REPORT 

What a memorable year of activity and historical highlights it has been around the Club in 

2009/10! To name but a few... The wake of the old clubhouse that served us so well for so 

many years! The opening of the new clubhouse and all the associated celebrations such 

as the Soft Opening, the SYC Ball, Opening Day and the list goes on. Somewhere along 

the way we found time to go sailing, with the first major dinghy regatta of the season 

being Sail Sandy in October. The operations of the new clubhouse were certainly put to 

the test over this period and the regatta served as an excellent learning experience and 

pre-cursor to the Sailing World Cup which was held shortly after in December. Racing for 

both events was held at close proximity to the front of the clubhouse, with the new front 

balcony providing a perfect viewing platform for the spectators. The atmosphere around 

the Club was absolutely vibrant and I would encourage all members to come down and 

join in when these great events happen again next season! 

Looking forward to other events, we are also very excited to 

be hosting the International Cadet National Championships 

at SYC in January 2011. As most will know, the Cadets 

have a long standing history at SYC spanning over 50 years 

as a pre-eminent junior training class. Accordingly, we are 

delighted to again be hosting the Nationals. Whilst on this 

note, I should mention that all of our crews that attended this 

year’s nationals performed extremely well, so the competition 

will be intense when the title comes to our home waters! 

On a different note, while we are doing our best to keep 

the OTB facilities working, the poor state of the building 

and rigging area continues to be a problem for us. This 

has no doubt been highlighted to many members in recent 

times due to the fact that aspects of the new clubhouse 

directly overlook the area. However, I would like to assure 

our members that the Club management and General 

Committee are working hard on various strategies to fix the 

area. This is a priority for the Club and I have no doubt that 

as trading settles in the new clubhouse, ultimately the OTB 

area will be brought up to the same standard as the rest of 

the Club. I would impose on everyone to bear with it in the 

meantime and be patient... It will happen! 


Once again our SYC dinghy sailors enjoyed considerable 

success over the Christmas period (Dinghy National 

Championships) and in particular our congratulations go to

I would also like to acknowledge all the sailors and families 

who made the effort to attend their Nationals. It is a big 

task in every respect to pack up all the gear and head off 

interstate for a week of intense competition! Well done to all!! 

On a final note, one of my personal highlights of the season 

has been catching up with all of the OTB sailors and 

families on many a Wednesday evening for an informal 

BBQ after Twilight racing (and at times admittedly Thursday 

mornings have been a little slow). We all come along to 

compete or support our families, but the great camaraderie 

and sense of community we have at our club makes it a 

special place to be! As my time as the Club Captain nears 

an end, I would also like to extend my personal thanks 

and appreciation to all those people who have so willingly 

supported me and who have volunteered their time each 

week to ensure the Off The Beach area runs smoothly.

partly by member support and partly by the 

participants. The 2009/2010 season has 

seen a steady improvement in the skill level 

and competitiveness of all our JDS sailors 

under the guidance of Head Coach Max 

Taylor. Max was ably supported by Warren 

Slater of South Eastern Sails and recent 

Ex Cadet Joel Aulich on the two occasions 

when Max’s own sailing commitments 

kept him away and we are grateful for their 

willing assistance. 

The two major regattas for our JDS Cadets are their 

Nationals which were held in Adelaide in January and the 

Victorian States which were held at RYCV on the March 

long weekend. Sandringham Cadets produced excellent 

results at the Nationals with two of our crews selected to 

represent Australia at the 2010 International Cadet Worlds 

in Poland and also placed 2 nd and 3 rd at the States, certainly 

Sandringham’s best results for some years. Nearly all of 

our Squad members improved on previous regatta results 

with some of our less experienced members finishing high 

up in the fleet in individual races. Max kindly made himself 

available to coach at the States beyond the scope of the 

JDS program and all our sailors benefitted from his wisdom 

at the event. 

The JDS sailors have been keen and receptive participants 

in the program and have learned much from Max as the 

results across the fleet will attest. Max has kindly offered 

to continue the program through the winter months to 

further sharpen their skills in preparation for the 2011 Cadet 

Nationals to be sailed at Sandringham from December 27 

2010 to January 4 2011. The Cadets are looking forward 

to hosting such a prestigious event on their home waters 

and we can expect to see some of our Junior Development 

Squad Cadets at the forefront of the fleet. 


Cadet Monty takes off! 

As is inevitable, a few of our skippers from the Squad 

are moving on to youth classes after their time in Cadets 

and we take this opportunity to thank them for their 

participation, particularly for the mentoring of their young 

crews; the skippers of the future. Hopefully the skills and 

techniques learned in their time with the JDS will stand 

them in good stead as the progress in their sailing careers. 

A big thanks to the many supporting parents who help out 

with RIB driving, mark laying, Race Management and to the 

ladies of the Canteen who keep the Squad fully fuelled up 

and raring to go! 

Lastly, a very special thanks to Max Taylor who so willingly 

and enthusiastically gives of his time and experience for the 

betterment of our young sailors. It is great to see one of our 

own most successful dinghy sailors giving so much back to 

the Club.

WISC - Women In Sailing Challenge 2009/2010 

Once again, we had a good size fleet 

participating with 19 boats from Sandringham 

and Royal Brighton yacht clubs. 

At the time of writing, the competition this 

year has been fierce with many vying for the 

top place. Audacious (Kate Clarke and her 

crew from RBYC) giving last year’s winner 

Hush (Marissa McManus and crew from 

SYC) a run for their money for the major 

prize. Oh so close! Absolute (SYC - Lorraine 

Steers) and Smooth Criminal (SYC - Helen 

Cameron) are also nipping at their heels. 

Suzette Pelt and her team at Queensland Yacht Charters 

have again sponsored the series. The major prize awarded 

to the PHD winner, is a fabulous Whitsunday holiday with 

Queensland Yacht Charters (A $4000 voucher which can be 

used towards a bareboat charter on any Queensland Yacht 

Charters yacht, catamaran or powerboat) 

Noreen Marr from Worldwide Ticketing has again provided 

first prize for AMS, a perpetual trophy and a voucher for 

$400 and Ronstan have generously provided first prize for 

the IRC winner. 

As was the case last year, RBYC co-hosted the series. 

Information nights were run on a weekly basis leading up to 

the first race which were very informative and well attended; 

a great success. Guest speakers included 

Sarah Blanck - Dual Olympian and three times World 

Champion spoke on race and boat preparation.

which had all attendees glued to their seats and provoked a 

number of questions/comments

past SYC Sail Club Captain and owner of 38 Degrees South 

did a great job once again on race trim and boat mechanics 

Brett Averay - from Evolution/Quantum Sails provided an inside 

view of race starts and tactics, which many of us have put to use 

There was also an on-the-water race clinic on starts and 

coaching, run by RBYC, prior to race one, which was a 

huge success. 

The Women in Sailing Challenge consists of six races, 

one per month, from October to April the following year. 

This series is open to all women who wish to improve their 

sailing skills or get into sailing. It is open to all yacht clubs 

around the bay - it is not just SYC and RBYC boats that 

participate, we had a boat from Safety Beach in the series. 

The object of the series is to encourage female crew 

to take on key roles on the boat. The criteria for 

the series is female crew must be in the following 

key crew positions; helm, mainsheet trimmer and 

foredeck. Yes, you can have guys on board, but there is a 

limit to the number of male to female crew depending on 

the size of the boat and number of female crew. 

It is a lot of fun and good competitive sailing. It keeps getting 

better each year. So come on and get out there and give it a go!

SOCIAL REPORT 

The first of our events in the new 

clubhouse was our Annual SYC Ball, 

sponsored by World Wide Ticketing. It 

was a sellout. As a result we decided to 

incorporate the event into the Harbour 

View Restaurant to enable more members 

to attend and in total we had 340 people, 

which was an awesome response! 

The night went well, the food was delicious, the band “Big 

and Horny” were fabulous! The room which was decorated 

by the social committee under the instruction of our 

marvelous Cheryl Renouf looked great once again. Thanks 

to Gillian Stubbs, SYC staff and to all involved in our first 

club event!!! Many thanks also to Noreen Maher and our 

other sponsors.

Next we had our new phase of members trivia sponsored 

by “Boat Books”. With our new hosts Eryl and Cheryl, 

we started the new season in the Members’ Lounge. 

The winning trophy was taken out by Intelligence Sans 

Frontieres. Congratulations! Second were Rag Tag and 

third, Off The Beach. Well done everyone! We had lots of 

fun and would like to encourage more people to come 

and join in this year: create a team or just turn up, we can 

always accommodate you. The next season commences 

on the 25 th June and will continue to be held on the last 

Friday of every month over winter. Thank you once again to 

our Trivia sponsor ~ “Boat Books”. 

In November we had our inaugural “Calcutta Cup Eve 

Night” organised by the wonderful Doris Little. It was an 

absolute success, with non-stop entertainment. The 

phantom Melbourne Cup race caller was a hoot! Each 

table received a horse and then the horses were auctioned 

off. What a sight to behold, with some members getting 

very excited! We had fantastic auction items, one of which 

was the silks of famous jockey Glen Boss. Along with a 

marvellous dinner, we were entertained by the famous 

Normie Rowe and the original playboys. 

Doris, with the help of the Social Committee, did a fantastic 

job and due to the success of the evening it is now a 

permanent fixture in the social calendar. 

You couldn’t hear a pin drop, when Doris gave her touching 

speech on Motor Neuron Disease, as all the funds raised 

from this night went to the research of Motor Neuron. 

Emotions were running high that night, whether it was 

laughter or a few tears but all in all, what a great night! 

Thank you to Doris and Tim Little, the committee, Bill 

Stubbs who did a wonderful job of being the MC for the 

night, our auctioneer John Clarkson from Hocking Stewart, 

Jen Middleton, Normie Rowe and the Playboys, our 

generous sponsors and all the staff at SYC. We raised 

$32,000 which was an amazing effort.

Four Gold 3 1/2 Anchor star marina rating latest accolade 

for Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) 

SYC just keeps on winning accolades and 

this time the Club has been announced as 

one of only eight marinas to receive 

3 star marina 

a Gold Anchor rating from the Marina 

Industries Association. 

A Gold Anchor rating provides boat owners and marina 

users with a simple way to determine which marinas best fit 

their needs via a quick and easy reference system similar to 

the hotel association’s star rating scheme. 

Gold Anchor marinas are independently assessed against 

specialised point-based criteria covering more than 96 

different elements of marina facilities and services. 

Once a rating has been assigned to a marina, it is subject to 

mystery-shopper checks over the following three-year rating 

period to ensure the integrity of the scheme remains. 

The Gold Anchor rating system helps consumers 

differentiate and choose marinas based on their needs. 

Thrilled with their accreditation as a Four Gold Anchor 

marina, Richard Hewett, the CEO of SYC commented: 

“The Gold Anchor rating for SYC gives us International 

recognition whilst also benchmarking us against some 

of the best facilities around the world. Further to the 

recognition that comes with the four gold anchors, it has 

provided us with an independent ‘service health check’ 

identifying areas where we can improve and meeting these 

higher standards is now our focus”. 

One of the most innovative yacht clubs in Australia, in mid 

2006 SYC became the first club in Victoria to receive National 

Clean Marina Australia accreditation. In late 2009, the Club 

was re accredited as a Clean Marina with Level 3 accreditation. 

In October 2009, SYC opened the doors to their striking 

new premises beautifully designed by Richard Mabin & 

POLICE AWARD 

The Sandringham Police recently acknowledged 

SYC for their work with the community. Pictured 

here is Sergeant of Police Christopher Gustke 

and the Club’s CEO Richard Hewett. “Our local 

law enforcers have been a tremendous help 

over the past year with advice and support 

on Emergency Response Planning Issues, 

Liquor Licence Compliance and assistance 

with special events. It is enormously helpful 

to have such proactive local law enforcement 

assistance from the Sandringham police, we 

are very grateful” said Richard.

then, the Club’s Facilities Manager, Paul Corfield, was one 

of just 15 to receive a prestigious Community Hero Award. 

Shortly after, the Club won the Best Club Redevelopment 

Award at the annual Clubs Victoria Achievements Awards 

Night, recognised for its outstanding new clubhouse 

redevelopment. 

SYC also won the ‘Best Community Facility Design’ at the 

Victorian Government 2009 Sport and Recreation Awards 

in November. A prestigious award, it recognises new or 

refurbished sport and recreation facilities, with the focus 

on excellence in planning and design and a demonstrated 

impact on participation. 

Other awards won by the Club, which has a training facility 

second to none, include Environmental awards in 2007 

and 2009 at the Victorian Marine Industry Awards and the 

Victorian Yacht Club of the Year in 2007. It was also a top 

three finalist in the Marina of the Year awards in 2007. 

Apart from the fabulous dining and function rooms, the 

Club’s training facility is second to none and services many 

of the schools in the area. 

The new club boasts a training auditorium with meeting 

rooms, which will establish SYC as a leader in providing 

accredited courses in sail training, boat handling, marina 

operations and resort management water-related activities. 

SYC provides skills and training and is recognised as one 

of very few sporting clubs in the country with Registered 

Training Organisation (RTO) status.

J24 NATIONALS AT SANDY 

In true one design tradition you can always 

rely on a great competition. “With only 

one day of racing to go in the Australian 

J24 championships, there is only one point 

between first and second and one point 

between third and fourth. The current 

standings have Doug McGain NSW first 14 

points, Sean Wallis W.A. second 15 points, 

Hugo Ottaway Vic third 22 points, Dave 

Suda Vic fourth 23 points and Sean Kirkjian 

NSW 32 points. McGain, Wallis, Ottaway 

and Kirkjian, are all Australian Champions 

and Suda a runner up National Champion.” 

So wrote Hugo Ottaway on the night before the last day - a 

day that changed the aspirations of many and the outcome 

of the whole championship. 

The second last day’s heats were sailed in the same perfect 

Port Philip Bay sailing conditions experienced during the whole 

regatta, a 10 to 15 knot southeast wind matched with a flat 

sea and clear 28 degree temperature saw both Suda and 

Kirkjian win heats putting additional pressure on the front three 

boats. Doug McGain and Hugo Ottaway had consolidated their 

positions with two seconds for Doug and two thirds for Hugo. 

Sean Wallis - after electing to drink more responsibly and 

swimming the boat for the first time in 10 years - had his worst 

day so far with an 8th and 4th. However, with the one race drop 

system now kicking in after six races completed, Wallis was still 

able to hold onto second at the end of the penultimate day. 

Both McGain and Wallis needed top eight positions on the last 

day to secure their hold on first and second, anything worse 

could see Ottaway and Suda with a win, move into the lead. 

Pacemaker 


The early part of the regatta gave the competitors a good 

chance to get their racing sorted out with the weather providing 

fantastic sailing. Sean Wallis had taken an early lead with the 

rest of the pack shuffling into rough position behind him. 

The Social Committee headed by Robyn and Sarah had got 

into gear and Tuesday night’s Mexican hi jinx was a night to 

remember. The Mexican spirit flowed liberally and stick-on 

moustaches, ponchos and sombreros were all the rage. 

Live music, Mexican accents and margaritas all combined 

to make sure the night was a huge success. Dave off Wetty 

Gripper won the major prize in the raffle of a huge hamper 

donated by Hamper Creations of Melbourne. 

So to the last day and with Wallis needing to beat McGain 

in both races to win the title, neither crew let the other have 

any breathing space. Both headed off from the start together 

and stayed no more than a boat length apart up the first 

windward leg, with McGain ahead of Wallis at the first mark. 

On the downwind leg to the finish Wallis once again headed 

to the right side of the course with McGain & Kirkjian to the 

left. But at the finish line it was Alyn Stevenson first, winning 

his first Australian championship heat followed by Wallis, 

Kirkjian and McGain respectively. 

Going into the final race the tables had turned, Wallis now 

lead the championship with a one point lead from McGain 

while Ottaway had beaten Suda in race 9 to secure a two 

point buffer in third place. 

The final race saw McGain start at the boat end with Wallis 

about five boat lengths further down the line in the company 

of Suda. The positions remained unchanged at the front of the 

fleet with Wallis finishing ahead of Suda with McGain third. 

An unfortunate first beat and top mark rounding saw Hugo 

Ottaway in Vice Versa stuck at the back of the pack, with 

Pacemaker having an easy time up the front.

The final result saw Pacemaker sneak home with a third 

overall, Doug McGain second and Sean Wallis retaining 

his title with back to back championship wins. 

The handicap championship was won by Adam Evans 

and his youth team from Sandy sailing Two Dogs while 

the first female skipper was Kirsty Harris from Sandy and 

her all female team sailing Hyperactive. 

The Sandringham Yacht Club’s recently built state of the 

art clubhouse and facilities were excellent, along with an 

immensely professional approach to race management 

by Graeme Watt and his team, the sailing department at 

the Club and all the volunteers it once again proved the 

Club is one of the world’s best venues for yacht racing. 

J24 Australia wishes to thank the volunteers, members 

and management of the SYC for their support in hosting

and Sandringham YC. We also congratulate the success 

of the various SYC participants. 

The Presentation dinner was held in the Port Phillip room, 

on a stunningly calm and warm Friday night after the last 

day’s racing, with presentations, music and dancing till the 

wee small hours. 

As well as the perpetual trophies successfully defended 

this year by Sean, seven skippers also each took away 

impressive half model trophies made by our national 

measurer Peter Stevens. Each of these models was coated 

in various colours to indicate the place, with gold, silver 

and bronze for the first three one design and blue, red and 

green for the handicap. Fittingly the female skipper’s model 

was done in pink.

To add more success to the championship, two Sandy 

crews are now going to Sweden to represent Australia in 

the 2010 World Championships. Hugo Ottaway and Robyn 

Coombs and their crews have won the right to sail and are 

now making their preparations. 

The success of the Nationals here has already had positive 

results for the fleet with more interest and a number of new 

boats expected at the Club in the very near future.

Australian Championships Report 

‘Odyssey' Jarad Cavanagh & Dylan Rohan Cadet Nationals fleet returning after 

race abandoned 

Two out of three ain’t bad! 

Ten Sandringham Cadets together with 

their supporting families and friends 

made the journey to Adelaide to compete 

in the 2009/10 Cadet Nationals from 

January 12-17 2010. They faced intense 

competition in a huge 81 boat fleet and 

came away with two podium placings; the 

best Sandringham Yacht Club result from a 

Cadet Nationals for some time. 

The event commenced with measurement carried out 

in extremely hot (43Deg C!) conditions with shade at 

a premium. The predominantly windy series was then 

superbly conducted by Adelaide Sailing Club under Pro 

Malcolm Hughes in often challenging conditions with three 

races unable to be sailed due to strong winds and high 

seas. All races were sailed on well laid triangular courses. 

The shortened nine race series was won convincingly by 

Tasmania’s Alec Bailey (15) and sister Samantha (12) who 

had just returned from scoring an excellent third place 

for Australia at the Cadet Worlds in Argentina over the 

Christmas – New Year period. Alec and Samantha won the 

Cadet class at Sail Sandy in October 2009 as part of their 

preparation for the Worlds and Nationals. 

Second place went to early series leader, Sandringham’s 

Isabella Say and Benjamin Brill sailing ‘Insayne’ to three heat 

wins. Isabella won the Mermaid Trophy for the top female 

skipper and Benjamin won the trophy for the first male crew. 

Joining ‘Insayne’ on the podium, in third place overall, was 

Sandringham’s ‘Samaran’ sailed by Anton Sasson with 

younger brother Julian as crew. Both Sandringham Cadets 

received invitations to join the Australian Team for the

forthcoming Cadet Worlds to be sailed in Puck, Poland in 

July 2010, a great result for SYC. 

Continuing their great progress, one of SYC’s newer Cadet 

skippers, Jacob Freeman and his crew Carlo Caiani sailing 

‘Quantum Leap’, were declared overall winners of the 

Handicap division. 

All Sandringham Cadet sailors performed well and were in 

every respect a credit to their Club. In a particularly windy series 

with tidal influence creating big seas, it was particularly pleasing 

to see some of our less experienced young sailors tough it out 

to complete their races. Many supporting parents and friends 

were greatly impressed with their determination and stamina 

which bodes well for their future as competitive sailors. 

Sandringham’s Cadet sailors formed part of the 40 boat 

Victorian contingent at the Nationals and were ably coached 

by Tom Kelly with assistance from former SYC Cadet sailor 

Joel Aulich, giving the benefit of their many years experience 

in the Cadets. 

Presentation Night at Adelaide Sailing Club provided the 

opportunity for SYC OTB Club Captain Rob Davis to give an 

on-screen presentation to the assembled competitors and

Yachtshare evolved from an extremely 

successful business called Boatshare 

which was established in the late 90’s. 

With over 35 cruisers to its credit and 

servicing well over 150 families Boatshare 

added luxury Jeanneau yachts to its fleet

Ron White’s membership number at SYC 

says it all – 0003! A member since 1964, 

Ron is a former Commodore and a lifelong 

contributor to our great club. These 

observations, extracted from a letter from 

Ron to the Commodore, give a fascinating 

insight into club life from the end of the 

Second World War to the 1980’s 

Dear Commodore Philip Burn, 

Approximately fifty years ago, I began working in the SYC 

yard, at the request of Commodore Aub McKenzie, who 

had been chairman of the Country Roads Board in Victoria 

and also chairman of Melbourne Harbour Trust. He was 

commissioned by the Melbourne Harbour Trust to supervise 

the construction of the sea walls at Brighton, St Kilda and 

Sandringham foreshore. 

I could not afford in those days to become a member, I was 

busy paying off my house and raising my three children. 

Eric McKenzie, forman at the CRB yard would ring and say 

a bulldozer had to be taken down to SYC yard and tested. 

I would have to make a written report on its performance. 

These tests, done on the SYC yard, saved the SYC 

valuable funds on the surface construction. Alan Truan, a 

SYC member on the General Committee, who was on the 

Victorian Railways Board, would ring to say there would be 

used railway lines and sleepers available for SYC use. Eric 

McKenzie and I would take my low loader down the line 

on a Sunday morning and drag the rails and sleepers back 

to the truck and load them by hand and then back to SYC 

where we would lay them. I remember one time we picked 

up a load of rails and sleepers at Spotswood, costing 3 

pounds 8 shillings for the load, once again saving SYC 

valuable money. 

Each time we had a function I would have to go down to 

SYC, early the following morning and bury the night soil, 

as SYC did not have a sewerage system. At one stage we 

had a garbage strike lasting 2 or 3 weeks, the bins were full 

of maggots. Ernie Byron and I had to shovel them out of 

the filthy bins and pay the tip-master very well to bury them. 

I had to drive home in a singlet and underpants as my 

clothes were putrid. No job too filthy or too hard. The Club 

realised we would have to connect to the main sewerage 

line on Beach Road and get a new water main, if not we 

would be closed down by the Health Department. Being an 

ex-player and ex-member of Sandringham Football Club, I 

was able to get permission to tap into both their sewerage 

and water mains, to save the cost of entry to the mains. 

In the late 70’s, I became involved with the construction of 

the St Kilda Marina and sent free crushed rock to the Club 

in preparation for the sealing of the yard surface. I also sent 

the asphalt company to the Club at no charge. During all 

the work at SYC, no money was borrowed. 

MEMBER NEWS - RON WHITE 

During my time as Commodore, Tom Stevenson made a bid 

for the World Half Ton Cup and the support given to Tom 

and his team was great. Some thirty thousand dollars was 

raised mainly by the Associates. Ron Langman, Head of 

Containers Ltd, gave some thousands of cans which were 

filled up with beer by CUB breweries, which were sold to 

the Americans, the funds being used by our boys to train. 

As Commodore of SYC and vice-president of VYC I 

approached the AYF for the right to hold the Admiral’s Cup 

trials at SYC in Victoria, as the tidal position at the heads 

were similar to that of the Solent in England. When we 

were given the green light, we built a new deep water slip to 

service the competitors. The trials were a great success and 

the Australian team went to the UK and won the Admiral’s 

Cup for Australia. 

Ross Farrow then asked me whether I thought I could 

obtain a lease for QCYC. I invited the then minister, Vasey 

Haughton down to QCYC and he promised to grant them 

their lease. As president of SADFC, I invited the minister 

down to Sandringham foreshore where he gave permission 

for the croquet club to replace their building, which had 

been burnt down, as long as it was easily removable. 

Once again council had refused. We also ran a fundraising 

day for the sea scouts towards the cost of their 

new building. We raised $7,000. All these I thought were 

good public relations for the SYC. In 1979 I was awarded 

joint yachtsman of the year for my efforts. I was also guest 

of honour at RBYC centenary dinner. I was also Victorian 

Admiral’s Cup selector. 

I went to the Admiral’s Cup in the UK and worked long hours 

with Don Lang on Challenge, to prepare her for the cup, at my 

own expense. The support I received form Arthur Kilpatrick 

and Rex Newman, both life members, was fantastic. 

I still help service the race buoys for the same amount I 

have always charged, the only increase being for the cost 

of the pen. I help Paul whenever needed and towed a forty 

tonne metre barge to and from Heron Island twice, for no 

charge, laid and retrieved inner wall buoys for no charge. 

I remember jumping into the water and roping large rocks 

and then towing them out to sea, to clear the fairway. 

Whether I met our Commodore in Chief at SYC, the Queen at 

the cultural centre or Prince Charles at Government House, 

I always endeavoured to enhance the reputation of SYC. In 

1985 I had five heart by-passes done but continued to sail 

“Shenandoah 2” with a great deal of success.

MEMBER NEWS - HUGH PILSWORTH 

At the beginning of February 2008 myself, 

my wife and two crew were on board our 

Jeanneau SO49 yacht in Shelter Bay Marina 

at the north end of the Panama Canal. We 

were waiting to transit The Canal on our 

journey from Ireland to Melbourne. 

The weather was hot, at around 38 degrees and very humid 

and there were thundercells around every day. 

It is a requirement that the boat carry sufficient crew to 

handle four heavy lines, 120 feet long minimum diameter 

of 1 inch, so they are heavyweight. As we didn’t have such 

lines aboard we did the usual and rented them. We also 

borrowed an extra crewman for the trip. Neils was a Dane 

from another yacht waiting its turn to go. Neils would then 

become a valued crew man on his yacht as he will have 

done the transit when their turn comes around. 

All the yachts going through together were briefed on what 

to expect and were also checked again that their engine 

was sufficiently powerful to maintain an average seven 

knots throughout and it was explained just how expensive it 

is to break down in the canal. The only course open is to be 

towed into port by a canal tug, usually used to manoeuvre 

the big ships and left there. You are also heavily fined for 

missing out on your slot and will be forced to wait several 

weeks for a new transit time. All at your own cost. 

On the appointed day we were told to cross the entrance 

channel and anchor at The Flats. This is a muddy bottomed 

holding area out of the channel and reserved for small 

boats. The advisor, a sort of apprentice pilot and the hired 

ropes were due on board at around 5 to 6pm, but the ropes 

landed at 6.30pm and the advisor at 8.30pm. It gets very 

dark at around 6pm, so we were a bit more nervous about 

doing all this in the dark! 

After the advisor jumped on board from the very solid steel 

pilot boat we upped the anchor and set off to the Gatun 

Locks at slow speed, picking up two other yachts on the 

way. These would raft up with us for the transit. One was 


a French catamaran and the other a sloop from Estonia. 

Fortunately English is the operating language in the Canal 

Zone. We all approached the first lock, tied to each other 

with the cat. in the centre. The whole area was lit up 

brighter than daylight! What a power bill was my thought, 

but then we all pay dearly to go through. We were the first 

raft in and so had to motor the full 1000 feet of the lock. 

The walls are fairly rough concrete and definitely not for 

rubbing with GRP! We had tyres and fenders hanging over 

to protect ourselves. It took about 15 minutes to load the 

lock with the other rafts, fortunately no ships. 

As we waited there was some shouting and then the shore 

handlers threw over light lines to which we attached our 

heavy ones. One of them got caught up in the lazy jacks but 

with a bit of pulling and pushing, and a little swearing, we got 

it free. As soon as all the heavy lines had been pulled ashore 

the water began to rise. The crew on the ropes have to pull 

in rapidly as we rise so as to keep the raft in the centre of 

the lock. Its hard work as the boat gets buffeted around. We 

were told by our advisor that the flow rate was half of normal, 

but it was still rough enough and we had to keep pulling in 

on the ropes to keep the boats central. Our bow thruster got 

a good work out as well. Quite quickly we were up about 30 

feet above sea level and the lock gates ahead of us began 

to open. They are huge units made out of wood and steel. 

Soon enough we were motoring forward another 1000 feet 

for a repeat performance. There are three locks so by the 

time we reached Gatun Lake we were nearly 90 feet above 

the Atlantic. This is the highest I hope the boat will ever be! 

We quickly moved on to a mooring in the lake, put there for 

shipping to wait and slept for a few hours. The pilot got off for 

the night. You are expected to feed them and supply water/ 

tea/coffee to them during the transit, but their costs are fully 

covered by your fee no tipping required, and they are a very 

friendly bunch of people. They are also amongst the best 

paid workers in Panama. 

Next morning, as dawn broke, we were woken by an 

incredible noise. We thought the boat next to us was 

still partying, but it turned out to be the Howler Monkeys 

planning out their day’s activities. Although it only lasted 

about 5 minutes there was no sleeping through the noise!

MEMBER NEWS - HUGH PILSWORTH 

Shortly afterwards our new advisor came aboard and we 

set off towards the Pacific. There is a short cut, the Banana 

Channel, through the jungle. No ships can take this route, 

it’s too twisty for them. It’s about a five hour motor to the 

Gaillard Cut and on to the next set of locks, only two this 

time, but bigger. We were delayed for a few minutes whilst 

some blasting took place, part of the ongoing widening and 

deepening process to allow bigger ships through. 

As with the previous locks we rafted up and entered the 

first lock. This time it was during the peak heat of the day 

and the crewman on the foredeck, who was letting out rope 

this time, was being roasted in the heat and direct sun. An 

umbrella does a great job of keeping the sun off as well as 

the rain. This lock dropped us about 45 feet and then it was 

motoring about a mile to the second lock. As we motored 

along we admired the crocodiles on the banks and kept 

our feet and hands well inside the boat! After the second 

lock was finished we motored on out, dropping off the pilot 

first and then the ropes and tyres we had rented. Next up 

was The Bridge of the Americas, a spectacular suspension

bridge, linking North & South America. As we passed 

under this we celebrated entering The Pacific Ocean and 

approximately half way through our journey. 

The Panama Canal is an amazing feat of engineering, 

even without all the climatic and health problems that were 

encountered during its construction. If you are ever in 

Panama you will always get a berth on any yacht transiting, 

help is always welcomed. It’s also amazing to see a couple 

of ships crossing the road in front of you as you drive into 

Colon from Shelter Bay Marina. However even the locals will 

tell you that it’s not a country in which to wander round the 

cities, although we had no problems in Panama City. 

Just for information each time a lock is filled or emptied 

some 24 million gallons of fresh water is used. Mostly the 

authorities try to have a ship going up balanced by one 

descending so that the water is just moved sideways. This 

is one reason that yachts are tolerated only, they take all 

that water and displace virtually nothing. 

Each of the locomotive engine (electric power) that you see in 

photos generates a pull of 20 tons and costs $40 million each.

MEMBER NEWS - CROATIA EXPERIENCE 

Exploring the coast of Croatia would have 

to be among one of our most memorable 

holidays and would highly recommend it to 

anyone who enjoys sailing and likes to have 

an adventure! 

Last year we participated in the two week 

Croatian Yacht Rally organised by Mariner 

Boating. There were six yachts with crews 

from five Australian yacht clubs. 

We (Kathy & Paul Jacka, Carole & Mike Welsh and Jean 

& Peter Telford) were one of the two crews who were from 

Sandringham. The other team John and Sandy Lindholm 

(family and friends) actually won their Croatian trip in our 

Yacht Club membership promotion. 

Trevor and Maggie who run Mariner Boating accompanied 

the group and were our tour guides / race organisers who 

provided assistance as we made our journey along the 

Croatian Coast. They have done the trip many times and 

are very competent with their suggestions for what to do on 

the lay days. 

We raced and sailed down the Dalmatian Island chain 

from Sibenik to Dubrovnik via Trogir, Rogoznica, Vis, Hvar, 

Lastovo, Korcula, Miljet and Sipan. Every place was filled 

with history and magnificient views. 

Our yachts were Dufour 44,s with very comfortable and 

spacious accommodation for three couples with an extra 

little cabin that we used as our walk in robe! There was 

even an air conditioner on the yacht which we didn’t 

discover until the end of the trip! 

Typically a race would be over the last 10 – 15 miles of a 

passage between two ports of call on the rally route, with 

the morning spent cruising to a rendezvous for lunch before 

a start. The marina berthing was all pre booked and paid 

for, so all we had to do was tie up and enjoy a crew dinner 

and meet with the locals. 

All the marinas were very well equipped with clean 

showering facilities and had convenience shops that 

sufficed for topping up our basic food and beverage 

requirements. We were also able to get fresh foods from the 

local markets. 

The lay days enabled us to do whatever we wanted whether 

it be to go exploring, sightseeing or to sample some local 

foods and experience a little shopping. 

This was a great way to see another country travelling with 

friends. Well worth doing!

The Club Marine SYC Boating Academy’s 

Tackers Programs are 100% beginner 

friendly and is the perfect way to 

introduce your child to the wonderful 

sport of sailing. Tackers is a junior 

development program aiming to provide 

every Australian junior school student the 

opportunity to go sailing in a professional, 

safe and fun environment. 

The Tackers Program uses SYC’s fleet of Optimists - 

the YA endorsed junior training boat, which are virtually 

indestructible and unsinkable. They have plenty of 

buoyancy and perform well even with the weight of adult 

sized instructors aboard, should they need to help the 

participants. Our aim is to develop confidence in and 

around boats in a fun and team spirited atmosphere. 

Our instructors and assistants are qualified with Level 1 

Yachting Australia Instructors Certificates and are trained 

specifically for the Club Marine SYC Boating Academy 

courses. All of the Instructors are very experienced dinghy 

sailors and are skilled in the running of Junior Sailing Programs 

and many of the participants return for repeat experiences. 

Your child’s introduction to sailing will be safe, fun, educational 

and will leave them wanting to come back for more. 

There are normally two participants per boat. This can vary 

with the different sizes of the participants. The Instructors 

also take into account the sailing ability and confidence of 

the participants in the given weather conditions. 

We take safety very seriously. We have on and off water 

policies that our instructors follow and use to base their 


decisions upon. When on the water all participants must 

wear PFD1’s (Australian Standards Approved) which we 

supply. The theme of water safety runs throughout the 

course. The Club Marine SYC Boating Academy and it’s 

instructors adhere to policies and procedures set by our 

governing body; Yachting Australia. 

Participants are provided with Tackers branded gear and 

materials such as Tackers branded T-shirt and waterbottle. 

Additionally all participants receive junior membership to the 

Sandringham Yacht Club for the remainder of the Club year! 

The Club Marine SYC Boating Academy delivers weekend 

Tackers programs throughout the year, Tackers After School 

and Tackers Squad programs in Terms 1 & 4 and Tackers 

Holiday programs Term 3, Christmas/New Year and Term 1. 

At the conclusion of the course, students will receive a 

certificate as well as information regarding further courses 

and Club programs. Instructors are always available to 

discuss sailing pathways and general advice for those 

looking to continue their sailing experience. 

The only prerequisites are that children must be a minimum 

of seven years of age (the course is open for children 

between the recommended ages of seven to twelve years 

of age) and able to swim a minimum of 50 metres. The 

programs are open to both members and non members so 

please spread the word to friends who have children who 

would like to learn to sail!

The Organising Committee is seeking sponsorship 

for this event – either financial or ‘in-kind’ - to 

assist with organising and running the Australian 

Championship. This regatta will provide competitors 

and their families with a sailing experience to 

remember and cherish. 

Sandringham Yacht Club has a long history with the 

International Cadet class and many of our club sailors 

started their sailing adventures in International Cadets– 

some who are well known club members! 

Ninety boats are expected to attend which equates to 180 

competitors aged between 7 -17. With families and siblings 

we expect around 400-500 visitors to our club for the event.
