Yolanda Williams, Central Intake. 15-Year Award Carl Aurin, Human Resources; and Shelia Cooper, Central Intake. 20-Year Award Retired Wilton Manors Police Chief and new BSO Cmdr. Rick Wiezbicki recently had the opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of Officer Oscar “Gonzo” Gonzalez and his K9 partner, Rocky, who passed away not long ago. In 1993, Rocky was the first passive narcotic detection K9 put into service in Broward County. For 12 years he and Officer Gonzalez forged a strong bond and an incredible partnership that resulted in more than 4,000 searches, 600 arrests, 1,613 positive alerts to narcotics and seizure of nearly $3 million dollars in U.S. currency. Cmdr. Wiezbicki and FOPA President Fred Neely documented the duo’s accomplishments and submitted them to the American Police Hall of Fame Awards Committee. Rocky subsequently received a posthumous Special Canine Police Citation for his outstanding and loyal service to the community. Paula Armstrong, Central Intake; Sgt. Herman Mercado, Conte Facility (grandfather Ramon Reyes) Volunteer SPOTlight North Lauderdale Volunteer Puts in Lots of Hours By aLesia russeLL, Co M M u n i t y & Me d i a re L at i o n s COP Capt. George Jeanty is more like a full-time employee than a volunteer in the North Lauderdale District. George is busy working in the district not once or twice a week, but every day! To date, he’s put in more than 1,500 hours of volunteer time in North Lauderdale. George began volunteering with BSO six years ago. A typical day involves patrolling neighborhood streets, alerting deputies about issues and working with kids. You’ll often find him in school zones interacting with students. “I like to help and I want to help the police,” George says. “I grew up with the police in Haiti and they are my friends.” He also coordinates the activities and events for the North Lauderdale COP members. George is a retired body shop owner from Long Island, New York. He’s been married to Terry for 37 years and they have four grown children. According to Terry, George doesn’t have much free time in retirement because he’s always volunteering. “He lives and sleeps COP work,” she says.
