The Children’s Neurological Center (continued from previous page)
Families using the services of CNC never
have to travel around the state for specialty
care; they simply walk down the hall. And
that can mean a lot when a child is sick,
undergoing long-term treatment—or when
a family is seeking first class care close to
home.
Our clinical centers of excellence include the
following inpatient and outpatient programs:
Sleep Program
Under the direction of two of the world’s
top authorities in sleep medicine, the
Pediatric Sleep Center at The New Jersey
Neuroscience Institute is the only facility
in the state that provides evaluation and
treatment for all sleep disorders, including
sleep apnea, night terrors, childhood
insomnia, restless leg syndrome and other
problems that collectively impact up to
one-fourth of children under the age of 18.
The program is comprised of an outpatient
center as well as a recently expanded
sleep laboratory for around-the-clock observation
and monitoring. Furthermore, its
physicians are published internationally for
their extensive research and oversee a sleep
fellowship program—training and mentoring
other doctors pursuing advanced certifications
in adult and child sleep medicine.
Neurosurgery
The Children’s Neurological Center has
the depth and experience to surgically treat
epilepsy, brain and spinal cord tumors,
spina bifida, spasticity from (or complica-
hydrocephalus and any
type of neurological
condition. It is one of a
few centers in New
Jersey with a dedicated
pediatric neurosurgeon
who works collaboratively
with additional
subspecialists to employ
the latest minimally
invasive and endoscopic
techniques, including
the gamma knife and
cutting edge neuronavigation
imaging
technology that has
made surgeries safer
and available to children previously diagnosed
with “inoperable” tumors.
Brain & Spinal Cord Tumors
Few things are more frightening to parents
than learning their child has cancer. At
CNC, we do everything possible to ease
their fears by providing the most advanced
tools and promising interventions for both
malignant and benign brain and spinal
cord tumors. Our multi-disciplinary team
addresses every aspect of medical care,
incorporating the expertise of pediatric
neuro-oncologists, neurosurgeons, intensivists,
neuro-pathologists, radiation oncologists
and numerous other specialties. We
are the only New Jersey facility equipped
with gamma knife technology, a breakthrough
treatment for brain
tumors and arteriovenous
malformation (AVM), while
also providing radiosurgery,
intensity modulated radiation
therapy (IMRT) and
chemotherapy.
Epilepsy
CNC welcomes a large
percentage of the state’s
pediatric epilepsy patients
with a program featuring
the newest assessment tools
and therapeutic innova-
Video EEG Monitoring Room
tions. A cutting edge video EEG monitoring
unit, for example, measures the brain’s
electrical activity, enabling physicians to
determine the location or origin of seizures
and recommend the best course of treatment.
The program’s wide array of interventions
includes ketogenic diet, vagus
nerve stimulation and other effective surgical
techniques.
Neurobehavioral Disorders
CNC offers a uniquely integrated
approach to neurobehavioral disorders,
such as Autism, learning disabilities,
attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder
(OCD), and movements disorders.
Intervention begins with advanced imaging
modalities, such as state-of-the-art
positron emission tomography (PET) and
computed tomography (CT) scanners to
facilitate accurate diagnoses. Treatments
are tailored to each child and may include
new low-dose medications and recently
introduced parent/child and group therapies.
Neurological Rehabilitation
At least one-third of CNC’s patients
require rehabilitation, which makes a dedicated
pediatric rehab facility a welcome
component of our vast continuum of care.
