reports <strong>on</strong> cycling <strong>and</strong> evaluati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

strategies to promote cycling; <strong>and</strong><br />

Bicycle advocates/researchers need<br />

to document better <strong>the</strong> effective<br />

strategies for promoting cycling.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

From <strong>the</strong> published evaluati<strong>on</strong> studies<br />

located, it is clear that <strong>the</strong>re are very few<br />

high quality Australian evaluati<strong>on</strong>s as<br />

defined by biomedical research<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards, although <strong>the</strong> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> such<br />

reports <strong>and</strong> publicati<strong>on</strong>s have increased<br />

substantially in <strong>the</strong> last five years.<br />

Despite this lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> evidence, <strong>the</strong>re has<br />

been a small but sustained increase in<br />

<strong>the</strong> prevalence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cycling over recent<br />

years, particularly in <strong>the</strong> inner state<br />

capital city areas. There are many<br />

examples <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> small projects that have<br />

increased cycling, or improved <strong>the</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for cycling, <strong>and</strong> many<br />

examples from o<strong>the</strong>r countries. The<br />

absence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol groups is not<br />

necessarily an evaluati<strong>on</strong> limitati<strong>on</strong>, as<br />

<strong>the</strong> prevailing cycling trends are declines<br />

or no change. The best available<br />

evidence indicates that <strong>the</strong> investment in<br />

cycling infrastructure AND promoti<strong>on</strong><br />

successfully encourages cycling. It is also<br />

clear from data <strong>on</strong> frequency <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

recreati<strong>on</strong>al cycling that a great many<br />

people want to ride bicycles. However,<br />

despite <strong>the</strong> multiple benefits <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cycling<br />

across many sectors, political support<br />

<strong>and</strong> financial commitment to cycling are<br />

required to increase <strong>the</strong> prevalence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

cycling.<br />
