They laugh and laugh. The two at La
Tervernetta 48. One is the owner Federico who
is happy inside and out. Always happy. The other
is his waiter, Allesandro! Federico came from Brazil
where along with his wife, Denise, they bought La
Tavernetta 48 in 2010. "It took til 2012 to say I am real
happy and successful with the guests coming. I changed
the menu 8 times in 5 years. I didn't like the old
menu and I didn't like the old food. So I kept
adding and subtracting and finally it is almost
perfect." says Federico. "Yes the chef before the one
we have now used to be my father. I am a little sad and it
took me about 2 weeks to actually get over the fact that he
is a chef somewhere else, yet now I am used to it.
Seriously Federico has taught me much with his kindness
and gentleness. He has taught me how since I am shy to
try to be more outgoing and talk to the guests. Since I am
The Casa Mia in Trastevere is real gorgeous. Truly. The Hotel is sleek and modern as you
can see from the picture below and has 12 very cool rooms. Each one is streamlined and chic and has a lovely piece of
special original artwork. "My favorite is small compared to most of the rooms, yet it is cozy." Says Fabio
as he shows me the different styles. "Since it is connected to the gourmet restaurant we love when the guests
come to dine with us, however, sometimes it is funny since they come to the concierge at the front desk and ask him
if he knows of any good restaurants and of course he says you can eat here! And if they say okay is there anything
else we recommend other places. The breakfast is served to the guests from 7:30am to 10:30 am and the restaurant
opens at 11:00am. Sometimes people come to eat here and they ask about the hotel since they never knew we had a
boutique hotel connected and they'll walk to the front desk and make reservations. I want for people to know
the restaurant as something that serves special dishes and real Italian food. All homemade. All
fresh. Everyday. And the hotel is along that theme of something that is above the ordinary." says
Fabio. "The music is blues and jazz and the feeling is comfortable and warm."
"It is a traditional family restaurant and I wanted to keep making Gnocchis on Thursday and Friday and Trippe on
Saturdays. People can feel like at home and come here for the traditional dishes. Plus we have a exotic menu such as
Lamb Chops and Wine Browned Rabbit and Coda Alla Vaccinara which is Oxtail or the tail of a cow. I
have never eaten the tail of a cow but George has." says Fabio and points to a jolly young man at the
front desk of the Hotel section. "I eat anything." says George. "It doesn't taste like the steak part of a
Cow though." he says. "Let's see. The wines? We only have Italian ones. Great wines. My uncle Luciano and
Sandro choose the wines. Of course Italian. That is why I keep saying the family involvement is important." Fabio keeps
reminding me. The restaurant is super yuppie yet totally homegrown if that makes sense. When you're in it you do feel all
warm yet it is chic and cool enough that you want to be seen at it!
i Do you know the name Trattoria comes from when
gnocchis on Thursdays..."the day he makes gnocchis he
Diego is a wonderful chef and Sandro at first is the cook
since last year when we opened in December. We are a
one year old restaurant. Then Sandro wanted to run
the restaurant and he hired Diego who is great." Says
Fabio who is a little shy of interviews. Along with
Sandro and Luciano, the three own the boutique hotel
and restaurant since one year. At the top is the garden
patio where guests can dine and to the left is the hotel
which opens to the garden. The hotel is beautiful and
when Fabio showed me the rooms they're expensive
yet simplistic. "Stefano is the interior designer
who is responsible for all the style of the hotel.
I am the public relations person and I love to

the feeling of the place. It adds to the comfort of the
Luciano order the wine and do the menu with
Diego. We are all learning but Luciano is my uncle and
it is very important to say that the restaurant is a
family restaurant. That is very important." When I ask
if his mom and dad come to eat everyday? Fabio
says,"Yes well okay not everyday!"
"My favorite food is the Carbonara which all Romans
love" says George, "Since it is centuries old. Maybe
200 years old." He laughs and Fabio says, "Hmm mine
is the Gricia which is basically the Carbonara but
without egg since I like the bacon." I must do research
to find why the only place on earth everybody loves
Carbonara that is a true Roman!
open to the restaurant, and chatted with Rita, her
nephew sat eating spaghetti after the long lunch run.
When I say chatted it is difficult since she only speaks
Italain, from the old school. Today she was skinning
artichokes and showed me how she takes the purple
flowers off and throws them in the garbage and keeps
the good stuff inside. Enrico comes from upstairs and in
Italian asks if I would love to try the Bolognese and I
ask for it with Fettucini. Of course I think he says! and
goes about making it fresh in the kitchen. He says to
make sure that I say that they have the best
traditional Carbarnara in Rome. With the original and
true recipes from Rita! I ask if the pictures of the
famous Alberto Sordi and woman eating spaghetti on
the wall is him and Rita when they are young and he
laughs and says that they are famous actors! To the
right, Enrico and a famous jeweler and his brother.
Ciao!
Only Italian...Enrico speaks...and when I say that I mean he only speaks Italian...Enrico was the owner of the
restaurant of La Nuova Capannina, which is difficult for an American to say. Enrico was old-school and when I first
met he and his wife the restaurant was closed from 3 to 7 then I knocked on the door and he let me in. Rita who is
Enrico's wife was yelling back and forth in Italian for me to enter but I kept answering in English since I didn't
know what she was saying! I dared venture into the dark restaurant(no pun intended as Ventura is Enrico's last
name!). The rest of the story is cool. With him pointing to the famous wooden sculptures art exhibitions on the
walls to the famous and real people and pictures he shows everywhere...some brand new and some weathered with
age: 60+ years of pictures and memories. https://www.facebook.com/la.n.capannina/...
Now at lunch Rita, Enrico's wife is busy with artichokes! and Enrico has me try the Fettucine Bolognese which is
wonderful. I loved it. And he says make sure that you tell everybody to come and try the Carbonara which is Rome
famous and especially here. They've been here forever and as I sit people walk near and smile and wave.
Everybody knows him! It is akin to love eating at the restaurant. ciao
come from Naples and the North. Two philosophies remain of NAPLES... the sun and the sea." he says.
"Right outside the room is the huge garden terrace which holds about 100 seats. It is open everyday with views of the city
yet most people love to sit here and socialize with cocktails during the summer. It is a great place for tourists, students,
"We have the reading rooms where people take the
cocktails and the brunches if they want. It is
whereever they feel comfortable."
"The 3 levels have emotional levels of remembering
too. We change as the day changes. For instance from
6:30pm to 9:30 pm we have Aperitivos that the
Italians are famous for and from 4:30 to 5:30 we do
the High Tea English formalities. It is a mixture of
culture and of esthetics." Says Luigi as he
takes me on the tour of the Design Restaurant.
You almost feel as if you are on a Museum
Tour.
"The lighting is changed from day and night. It
gives a dfferent mood to the people. At the Monday to
Friday we have normal lunches buffet and during the
Saturday and Sundays is Brunches. Americans and
Internationals love brunch and we do that and
we try to mix the Italian and the American
with the Lasagna and Pancakes." says Luigi.
"The basement section(which is beautiful) is
made of love. The mixology concept instead of a
bartending is to give all handmade cocktails and love
made. Yes it is beautiful yet the cocktails are the best
and the guests can come here til 2:00am partying."
recipes and drinking great wine(they have a good wine list) and asking the guy to play the guitar!
Is it more and more competitive these days? "Yes," he says. "You know we are old-school traditional and
the foreign and American people seem to love that. Yet the Italians can find that in their mom's kitchens. So
they like the new Italian restaurants. The good thing is if you have been in business since 1948 you have the
best connections to the best mercatos the best butchers etc. That is competitive amongst us and the
newbys. Yet we have loyal mercato suppliers and we choose the best."
Paolo, his friend at the restaurant says "I am a
38 years. He is a special person. I deliver wine to 10
restaurants in Rome and his is super special. We go
to vineyards to drink wine with each other. Here
chat about life. When I try to describe Khaled,
Paolo says, "He is a simple person. He is here 20
hrs. per day. He sleeps up in the loft!" he jokes.
Khaled brings a picture of his 3 children, who are
beautiful and shows me the picture and the 3 of us
walk around the corner to his wife's wine store.
"Here is some chocolates and wine." and we talk
about how lucky both of these people are to have
such lives of drinking the best wine of Italy
everyday. Wow.
Khaled speaks little english, is originally
from Tunisia,is married to a Italian girl, and
owns a Italian chic elegant wine bar
restaurant, but don't let that fool you. The
minute you walk into the exquisite,
beautiful, unbelievable work of art that is his
restaurant remember you are in Rome! It is
simply beautiful. It has "All the corks on
the wall, ya ya is from us the team
drinking the wine every night from 10
years. We gave Khaled the corks and
he build the wall," says his waiter
When I ask Khaled why he came to Rome?
He leans to me and laughs, "For my wife!
Ha! Love!" he gushes when he talks of his
life in Italy. Does he miss Tunisia? "No. I am
Italian." he says. "I love Italy. I love my
bambinos. I made the wonderful restaurant
and wine bar with my own ideas. No
architect. Only me. I have it now 10 years.
Badru has been with me 9 years. My chef
makes the recipes that I choose from
everywhere in Italy. I love when my
children come here to eat. A couple of
times a week." I say that they should
come everyday! The menu is a little
expensive but check out the decor!
And the wine. Yum! And the food...
Salmon,ostriche, pignatello di
polipetti, fettuccine funghi porcini,
gnocchi vongole e porcini, lambatina
from Bangledesh, Badru. Is anybody
real Italian in the restaurant? I ask
Khaled. "No!" he laughs and humbly
shakes his head. The word for the simple
man who owns the empire of Pasta Love! is
humble.
"he is born a chef. He loves his job, his work,
his life. He is in the kitchen and out saying hi
to guests. He is everywhere and you never
even notice him!" says Paolo of Khaled.
True. When we went to his wife's wine
Enoteca I admired a porcellin woman
with spices inside her...Soon without
me knowing how he got it is wrapped
up and gifted to me! Amazing.
and fun things to do around the world I had a lot of people asking me about types and the reason that
stereotypes is existing is that most of these ring true. The Specialty Boutique named I Vicini Bistrot
is one such place. It is as Italian countryside real Vineyard as you can get! "My family owns a
vineyard and a farm in Tuscany and the year of 2013 the Cabernet we produce won as the best in
"I love New York," Luisa says many times when I ask her about her travels...she has gone to
America! Andreas says that yes he loves that too. "I lived in California," he says. "Here try it, " says
Luisa as Andrea hands me a little spoon of "Red and Blue Fruit Cheese from France. It is from a tiny
farmer provincial and it is only available from such as we. You can not buy it never in any store: only
here it is." and when I try I say O my Love that is wonderful. Let me see I need to try it one more
time! Yum it is the best in the world. It truly is.
"We only have 5 tables and it is open from 12 to
know that we're responsible for the business
and we must work it ourselves, not hire people.
I design the lights. That and the tables. Me and
Aaa the wonderful world of google translations... "the owner of the restaurant is here since the 1600s ...right
next ot us in that little Trattoria and in here they only had the Italian food...now since the 37 years ago we
have a mix of Naples and Roman Italian dishes and of course there is the French," he says. Angelo is his
name! He is pictured here with his favorite actress, Ziva, who happens to play a character that is my
favorite! I ask if his food is French since the French embassy is here and that is why they made a French
restaurant. "O yes the French come here they love the food. The French ambassador comes here
everyday." And she eats the French food here? I happen to know the ambassador is a lady. "Why would she
eat French food at a Italian restaurant? She loves Italian Food." says Angelo. But I thought you said your
food is French? "No no not French. The French embassy is across the piazza, the food we have is Italian." O
finally now I understand:)
The most prestigious award the city of
Rome gives to any restaurant in the
city...must have been in existence at
least 50 years continually...only a
handful have ever received it.
One of the most beautiful ladys that I
have ever met both inside and outside is
of the lady! She has the most beautiful
skin of a woman that is 72 years old.
Wow. While waiting in the enclosed garden one
night to taste her famous prefixed dinner(along
with about 125 guests) a immigration lady
named Agnetta who handles the Rome sector
came and sat at my table. We laughed all night
long as Lady kept coming to my table kissing
my cheek. "Check out the skin," says
Agnetta,"I asked her one time...how does
the skin stay such lovely and without
wrinkles? and she says, that is since I am
cooking all day and night for 53 years.
Lady says to me that she loves to cook.
That when she is at home during the day
to rest she is sad. So sad. She comes back
to work and waits for her people. She has
never taken a vacation one day! In the
53 years of her life. And check out her
building where everyday tour groups
come to see the basement of the theater
house...inside the restaurant below is
where the real Julius Ceasar had a stone
room and carved markings on the wall
with a knife! Talk about that being cool!
this is history.
The steam from my pots keep my skin
fresh." It is true. People pay millions at spas!
every year around the world to receive skin
that beautiful...
Angelo and Umbria is all they will tell me when I ask their
names and they laugh hysterically when I repeat it and
ask if that is right...is that they're names? I guess they
care about their food, not what it is named!
The two characters here are a couple of things to
say...1 they are cousines, 2 they only speak Italian, 3
they have a wonderful sense of humor, 4 they have
been working about 45 and 43 years at the
restaurant and they love what they do. The food is
real Italian Old School right near the Spanish steps.
They have secrets the old Italian way and it is a good
thing I dont know Italian! Loved both of em. Ciao.
From googling translating a couple of guests I
gather that they use the Mercato for all of the items
everyday. When I say that I saw Cows hanging at
the Mercato with peoples names on them they start
laughing again! And add a few of their own!
"If I didn't love being a cook I wouldn't be a cook," is all
that Umbria will tell me with the help of google translate!
