Beer Styles<br />
There are two major types of yeast used to make beer:<br />
Lager & Ale<br />
Lager– “Clean & Crisp”<br />
Bottom fermenting yeast (anaerobic)<br />
Slower fermentation at cooler temperatures<br />
Produce fewer aromas and flavor characteristics than ale<br />
yeasts<br />
Refreshing and clean tasting<br />
Lager Examples:<br />
Style: Pilsner<br />
• First brewed in the city of Plzn in 1842<br />
• Light, straw golden colored with a significant malty,<br />
bready, biscuit-like flavor<br />
• Typically use the saaz hop variety which create a spicy<br />
and floral characteristic.<br />
• Beers of this style: Goose Island Pils, Sierra Nevada<br />
Summerfest, Sam Adams Nobile Pils<br />
Style: Vienna Lager<br />
• Named after the city in which it originated<br />
• Often well balanced with subtle hops and malty<br />
sweetness<br />
• Although German in origin and rare these days, some<br />
classic examples come from Mexico as a result of late<br />
19th century immigrant brewers from Austria.<br />
• Beers of this style: Sam Adams Boston Lager, Dos Equis<br />
Amber, Negra Modelo<br />
Style: American Amber/Red Lager<br />
• A broad category of light beers encompassing numerous<br />
brands<br />
• Significant malt presence with mild hops, typically only<br />
used to balance out the malt<br />
• Other beers of this style: Yuengling Lager, Brooklyn Lager,
