FESTIVE
THIS APRIL
The Rivers and Spires Festival began in the wake
of destruction. In January 1999, an EF-5 tornado
ripped through the heart of downtown, leaving
the historic city in ruins. Citizens soon rallied behind the
rebuilding effort. In celebration of the historic downtown’s
revitalization efforts, the community decided to celebrate
with a city-wide Festival. Now, 13 years later, that dream
has evolved into an internationally award-winning event
with over six stages of entertainment and more than 100
artists performing over a three-day period. The best part
is, admission is FREE, as are most activities.
When you walk the streets of Rivers and Spires the sights
and sounds are exhilarating. There is truly something to do
for the whole family as your explore the 10 city blocks that
make up the Festival. Children love the Sports Zone and
Family Fun Zone. There are over 60 inflatables and loads
of vendors offering interactive activities and games. This
year, the Family Fun Zone will be taken over by Pirates!
Come dressed as your favorite swashbuckler and win
some great prizes.
You can even please your teenager with activities such as
Gig City Gaming and the brand-new Silent Disco. Gig City
Gaming will be held in the Underground, just off Franklin
Street. Over 80 gaming consoles will have multi-player
games running all day long. Prizes and competitions are
posted at riversandspires.com.
Men of all ages love the car shows and the Military
Appreciation Area. The Festival boasts two different car
shows each year. Memory Lane Cruisers brings classic cars
of all makes and models. Corvettes on the Cumberland will
have a wide range of Corvettes and Tri-Fives on display.
The Military Appreciation Area is home to several different
military displays, equipment, and activities. These
interactive displays will be on hand Friday night and all
day Saturday.
Ladies, you’ll love the variety that the Festival has
to offer. From Arts Galore to the Marketplace, there’s
shopping for every style. The Festival of Nations honors
the 26 countries that call Clarksville home with handson
demonstrations, cultural music and dance, as well as
culinary demonstrations. Make sure you stop by the Quilts
on the Cumberland too, inside Madison Street United
Methodist Church. Quilters will have their artwork is on
display all weekend long.
Download the festival map and with so much to do and see
at the Festival, we know you’ll want to spend all weekend
exploring. Visit the website, riversandspires.com, to find
deals on hotel packages and travel information. We can
wait to see you April 16-18 in Historic Downtown Clarksville.
Lovin’ Spoonful Café
A unique little gem in Clarksville. This place is
just like you walked straight into the 60s or early
70s, even down to the what the waitress was
wearing... It is owned by a delightful lady that
runs her own kitchen, and cooks in it just like
you’re being cooked for at home. - Darrell B.
They serve very unique brunch/lunch menu items, such as their cucumber sandwiches
with a hummus spread. It has a very laid back and nostalgic atmosphere. They aren’t
open for any other time except for lunch, but I would recommend it if you’re in the
mood for something different and casual. – bumblebeigh
SILKE’S OLD WORLD BREADS AND BAKERY
AUTHENTIC GERMAN BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND BAKERY ITEMS
The Lovin’ Spoonful is very kitschy and endearing as far as decor. You’re greeted immediately
at the door, and the service is great. All the food is made fresh daily and super
delicious! It’s family-run, and that is very apparent. This is definitely one of my favorite
places in Clarksville! - C. Miller
admits there are even more in storage, just waiting to find
their place on the wall. Your visit is not complete without
a sample from the dessert menu, where each pie is made
fresh daily and the Hello Dollies leave you feeling groovy.
Silke’s Old World Breads Bakery
& Cafe
EXCELL MARKET
Sometimes the most unassuming locations have the
most mouth-watering menus. Such is the case with Excell
Market & BBQ. If you’re looking for a backcountry barbeque
experience, look no further than the back of this gas station
set on an old country road. When you pull into the parking
lot, your immediate thought will be, “This can’t be right”.
The space is small, but the smokehouse is packed and the
plates are plentiful. An entire meal, including drinks and
dessert, will cost less than $10. Guests can choose between
pulled pork BBQ, ribs, and chicken. It is recommended to
come early, people line-up and you don’t want to miss out!
EDWARD’S STEAKHOUSE
Set in the heart of Historic Downtown Clarksville, Edward’s
Steakhouse is the perfect location to enjoy a nice romantic
dinner for two. The calm atmosphere is complete with
high-back booths, piano bar and superior service. Guests
can enjoy specialty items each night or savor traditional
favorites like the beef medallions or shrimp alfredo.
yes, PIZZA!
Truly AWESOME old world breads made right
here in Clarksville! If you make the drive up
(and I MUST recommend that you do), they
have a wonderful little cafe that serves up some
authentic German fare, amazing sandwiches and
After you have finished your lunch, you can pick up a loaf or two to take home and then
walk it off by strolling through the neighboring antique store. - Amy C.
I was taken back in my mind to the times I spent in Germany. You see, Silke’s Old World
Breads Bakery and Cafe is as close as you’ll get to the real thing on this side of the
Atlantic without having to actually make a trip to Germany – BernardBarbour
AMAZING! One of my favorite places! Love the Fromage Sandwich, black bean soup, and
pizza! You won’t be able to resist the pastries! Yum! – Lindsay
MISS LUCILLE’S CAFE
Located in an upscaled flea/thrift/new and used
market, this restaurant has comfort food and
southern hospitality. Decorated in vintage finds,
pallets, and bucket lights, our late afternoon
lunch was served in a timely manner. One of the
daily specials was sold out, so that makes me
think it must have been good! The rueben sandwich
I ordered was piled high with meat and cheese and very good. A nice place to stop
and look around when a break is needed traveling Interstate 24 north of Nashville, TN.
CATFISH HOUSE
Tucked away across the river sits the Catfish House,
specializing in none other than authentic Southern cuisine.
Since the 1970s, this family owned restaurant has been
turning customers into friends and providing quintessential
Southern hospitality. The catfish are now famous, but the
restaurant is also well known for its steak, chicken, and
pasta dishes. No Southern meal would be complete without
those unforgettable hush puppies. And don’t even think
about leaving without trying the fried pickles, hand-breaded
and served with a homemade Ranch dip.
delights visit www.clarksvillecvb.com.
Great place for lunch! Tasty sandwiches and soups. We had both specials- a chicken
salad melt with zesty tomato salad and 5 cheese potato soup, and the wings (buffalospicy).
Kid friendly, order at counter. We will go back next time we are in town.
THE ARTS
HISTORY
Since the early 1900’s the corner of Franklin and First has
been the cornerstone of local entertainment. Opening
in 1947, The Roxy, has entertained Clarksvillians with
first-run movies until 1980. In 1983, the Roxy Regional
Theatre was born as a live theatre and quickly became
“…the cornerstone of downtown re-development.”
In 1995, a professional company was created in order
to supply the great demand for Shakespeare, other
classics, school curriculum-based productions and
holiday shows, and to enlarge the Roxy’s outreach
services to the community.
THROUGH TODAY
Celebrating its 32nd Anniversary Season, Roxy Regional
Theatre patrons have been entertained with over 400
productions since its start in 1983.
