FAREWELL GIBBO
Gee after all these years we farewell Paul Gibbons from ISC at the end of this term. Gibbo has been a stalwart of our school
community and he is well known and recognised in our school as a community person. There are so many things Gibbo just
does that we will miss in our school community, his teaching of humanities and his caring attitude towards all students and
staff. Gibbo will be sorely missed by us all and we wish him and Rae all the best with their new adventures in Bendigo.
Farewell and good luck Gibbo.
SURF CAMP AND MUNGO YOUTH CONFERENCE
This week we have two camps out of the school which are experience polar opposite environments. Our Outdoor kids are at
the surf camp in Torquay learning to surf and experiencing cold weather conditions whilst our Mungo students are camping in
very warm conditions and making presentations at the conference. I thank our staff for their continued commitment to
providing these opportunities for our students.
FRANCE HERE WE COME
During these coming holidays some of our year 10 students and staff are heading to France to do an historical tour and learn
about the landmarks and culture that is France. Our students are a part of a tour group organised by our very own Kara
Taylor and supported by Rebecca McClure. Students and staff from Red Cliffs Secondary College and the Senior College will
also make up the touring party. Kara Taylor won a prise that has allowed this overseas trip to take place. We hope the kids
and staff enjoy the experience and arrive home safely.
EASTER BASKETS
Congratulations to our Student Representative Council who came up with the plan to have vertical groupings (7-10) to plan
and development their groups Easter Baskets that are being raffled. There is much fun and frivolity with many new
relationships being forged. Our SRC Representatives have given up many lunchtimes to plan the 3 sessions and they have
been in charge of the sessions with support from teachers.
This week seven of our Year 8 students are attending and presenting at this exciting biannual conference held on Top Hut Station
which celebrates the Indigenous and European cultural and environmental history and significance of the amazing Lake Mungo
landscape. Our students have been working hard on creating an engaging and interactive workshop which shows the climate
changes that have taken place at Mungo over the last 45,000 years.
Congratulations to
teacher, Rebecca
McClure and students:
History tour of France and the Western Front
The Term 1 holidays will herald an amazing trip that has been offered to our students and extended to students from two other
neighbouring schools, RCSC and MSC, and that is to the Western Front and to historical monuments in France. Accompanying our
students will be Humanities Coordinator, Rebecca McClure and Year 10 Coordinator, Kara Taylor, who 18 months ago attended the
History Teachers' Conference in Melbourne and won first prize which meant up to $400 per student discounted on a history tour.
We will be excited to follow your travels overseas and wish you all wonderful memories and enriching experiences tracing the lives
and the battlefields in France and on the Western front.
School Captains and SRC
We have been so proud to witness increased student involvement and say in shaping the running of the SRC and its events this term.
This has culminated in the decision to trial vertical groups for the production of the Easter Baskets this term and resulted in students
getting to know more students in other year levels, working in teams to complete tasks. Well done to the captains for suggesting this
trial and for SRC representatives for running the lesson each time it has been scheduled in preparing the team's project; and further
thanks to our SRC teachers, Jacqui Garrigan and Rebecca McClure who have supported their student team in developing skills to lead
their peers and run team building activities in the vertical groups.
Stationery and Uniform
These term holidays are timely to again stock the pencil cases and purchase any necessary exercise books ready for Term 2. We are
also expecting that all of our students are in full school uniform for Term 2. Lowes are now fully stocked with an array of our
uniform.
And finally.... It's been a busy and productive Term One with all of our staff fully embracing the school's portal to provide timely
feedback on each student's progress this term, recording down key assessment tasks, due dates, written comments and uploading
copies of the task demands and rubrics. Enjoy the term's holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone geared up for another great
term ahead in Term 2.
TERM 1 FLO NEWS.
PAGE 5
It has been a very busy time down in the FLO room with lots of activities, learning and creativity happening. We have 41
students in the FLO program who have participated in a whole range of activities over the term. Here is a snippet of
what we have been up to……………..
Making Wooden Planter Boxes – The Year 9’s as part of their Cert II in General Education course have been working on
a project this term which involved making wooden planter boxes out of old pallets. The students had to pull the pallets
apart, remove the nails, plane the wood, cut and measure and then construct the planter box. There was lots of hard
work involved and the students learnt how important it is to work together as a team. We have almost completed one
planter box so far and we hope to keep making more throughout the year to put in our ‘Café’ area and also around the
school.
and a coat of varnish.
Spray Can Art –Througout the term all the FLO students in all the year levels have been working on Spray Can Art
murals which we are going to use to put in our ‘Café’ area to decorate the space and make it look really ‘funky’ and
‘cool’ and to brighten up our outdoor area. The students have really enjoyed these projects and the art works are
looking fantastic. Photos of the finished products to come early next term.
PILATES and FITNESS SESSIONS –We are very lucky to have Mrs. Gail Lever working in our FLO program this year who
has been running Pilates sessions with some of our students. We have only just commenced this program in the last few
weeks but we look forward to more sessions continuing next term and seeing the benefits of these sessions in weeks to
come – great for the body and mind. We are also very lucky to have Andre running some fitness/boxing sessions with
some of or students.
Volunteering at the Animal Shelter – This year we have continued our Volunteer Work at the Animal Shelter. The
animals love the interaction and socialisation with the other animals (and our students. )Our trips to the Animal shelter
are a real highlight of the week for our students. They love that feeling of giving back to the community and it is a ‘win
win’ for everyone.
FOOD HANDLERS AND BARISTA COURSE –
On Monday 20 th March, 14 of our FLO students in Years 9 and 10 particpated in a Food Handlers and Barista Course. This
was a full day of training and the students had to complete a test at the end of the Food Handlers Course to successfully
gain their qualification. We await our results in the next few weeks but I am confident all of our students will pass with
flying colours as they were very attentive, engaged, contributed to discussions and asked lots of interesting questions.
The Barista training is held over two days. We started our traininig on the 20 th and will complete training early net term.
On the first day students are shown how to operate the coffee machine, become familiar with the terminolgy, learn how
to make all of the 12 different types of coffee, how to clean the machine, etc.. The students then spend the next few
weeks ‘honing ‘ their skills before the trainer/assessor comes back to assess them and to find out if they are fully
qualified Barista’s.

It was a great day of training for all of the students who were thouroughly engaged throughout the entire day. We look
forward to tasting their ‘coffee art’ in the weeks/months to come. Thanks to Anyse Austrem, our trainer from Madec
who kept our students entertained, enthralled and educated throughout the day. It was a lot of fun.
Wow - We have been very busy and it is not until I look at these photos that I realise just how busy we have been. It has
been a really short term for our FLO students as the FLO program did not Handlers start until course. week 3 and I am super impressed
with what the students have achieved in just 7 short weeks. I am super excited to see some of our projects come to
completion before the end of this term/early next term and I look forward to posting photos of the finished products on
Facebook and in the next Newsletter.
Have a safe and relaxing holiday break and I look forward to an even better time in the FLO room next term.
VicSRC Workshop.
On Tuesday the 7 th of March the School Captains went to Mildura Senior College for the day to attend the VicSRC workshop.
Over the duration of the day we participated in many activities that helped to develop our leadership and teamwork skills.
We worked on effective ways of planning projects and we presented our ideas to the rest of the group. There were
presentations from other schools as well and games throughout the day. There was also a large amount of valuable
information that we gained that we will take back and put into our future endeavours, throughout the year, as your school
captains.
France trip 2017.
In less than two weeks 5 teachers and 36 students from ISC, RCSC and MSC will travel to France on the History trip of a
lifetime. This trip came about when Mrs Taylor was drawn as the winner to the major prize at the HTAV’s National History
conference in 2015. Over the last year and a bit Mrs Taylor have worked with teachers from RSC and MSC to build a joint trip
to places of historical significance. Students, and teachers, will travel to Paris and experience The Louvre, The Arc de
Triomphe and The Eiffel Tower among many other areas of interest. We then will make our way out to The Western Front
and visit places of interest from World War 1 and its memorial. Mrs Taylor will herself get to visit two relatives that were
buried in France. Students and teachers have had their final travel briefing and are getting prepared and packed to go. We
would like to thank the Irymple Secondary College leadership team and the Humanities department for supporting this
endeavour as well as the office staff who have helped with all the official documentation. Last of all a big thanks to the
parents who are allowing their young adults to come on this amazing journey with us. It is not just exciting because we get to
go to Dinseyland…..but that is a big part too. If you would like to follow the adventures of the group a Blog has been set up
that you can follow daily. You can find it at http://france2017.global2.vic.edu.au/
CONGRATULATIONS;
Congratulations to Coby Mitchell, of 8B, who has been selected in the Under 14 team for the Victorian Kookaburras junior
baseball team, to travel to America in July this year to participate in a baseball tournament. Coby was chosen from about 40
athletes at a try-out that was conducted recently in Melbourne. This is a tremendous achievement – well done Coby!
LATE ARRIVALS & EARLY DEPARTURES
We understand that occasionally students are late to school or need to leave early for appointments etc.
Parents/Guardians are reminded that a note or phone call to the office approving this is required on every occasion,
otherwise this is marked as an unapproved absence. Students then need to sign in or out on the ipad at the office, where a
SMS is sent to the parents/guardian.
This is our duty of care to each and every student.
Thank you for your cooperation.
