Tax Tips

NEED MORE TIME? 

April 15 (this year, the 18 th ) isn’t far off. Do you need more 

time to gather your tax information? Then ask for it! An 

individual may request a six-month extension of time to 

file Form 1040, to October 15 using Form 4868. No reason 

is necessary. The request must be postmarked or e-filed by 

the due date; no late extension requests will be considered. 

Your next question is “will it cause me to be audited?” 

and the answer is NO! In fact, many tax professionals 

believe the opposite, that it might reduce audit chances. 

Note, the filing extension is not an extension of time to 

pay any balance due. If necessary, and if possible, a 

payment should accompany the extension request to 

avoid interest and possible late payment penalty. 

Trust me on this: There are not enough accountants on 

the planet to prepare all returns by their original due 

dates. In the big picture, extensions are a necessity, or the 

system would fall apart. Only by spreading the work over 

a longer period of time can the profession as a whole even 

hope to produce quality work for so many taxpayers. 

Form 4868 is available in your tax software, 

online at www.irs.gov. 

Filing by April 15 is a lovely thing, but 

there are no awards handed out for doing 

so. So, extend that return! 

DID YOU OVERLOOK 

SOMETHING? 

When I look over prior year returns for 

new clients, I often see that a deduction 

was missed or that there was another 

error of some kind. In most cases, this can 

be fixed by filing an amended tax return, 

Form 1040X. 

The general rule is that you have three 

years to amend a return. If you filed your 

2013 return by April 15, 2014, you have 

until April 15, 2017 to amend it. 

Form 1040X must be paper-filed; it is 

not yet possible to electronically file 

them. For smooth processing, various 

attachments must be included. They 

usually are not a do-it-yourself project; 

professional assistance is recommended!

Spring Cleaning 

We simply love the warmth and coziness of wintertime, but there is something else 

that we anticipate at the end of winter even more: the start of spring. Our hearts fill 

with joy and positivity thanks to its rebirth, renewal and re-energizing sentiment. It 

prompts us to make a fresh start within ourselves and in our homes. And we are not 

alone–people all over the world have practiced this same ritual for many centuries. 

SPRING CLEANING RITUALS AROUND THE WORLD 

Spring cleaning is a time-honored ritual for a reason. In China people clean their 

houses, clothes and spirits in anticipation of Chinese New Year or Spring Festival. 

They do this to get rid of bad luck and misfortune that may have accumulated during 

the previous year. Once the house is tidied, it is forbidden to touch the floors with a 

broom, otherwise you risk sweeping out all the good luck that entered the house at 

the turn of the year. 

People in Iran have a similar ritual on the 21st of March each year. They call it Khaneh 

Takani, which means “shaking the house.” And that is exactly what Iranian people do. 

Everything gets a thorough cleaning: from beds and rugs to curtains and clothes and 

everything in between. Fresh scented flowers are brought into the house to renew the 

positive energy so both the new year and spring can arrive. 

In Thailand, people celebrate new spring beginnings with the festival of Songkran, 

where they clean their houses and take extra care to thoroughly cleanse all images 

and statues of Buddha in their possession. This tradition is then done in public during 

a parade, as people pour water mixed with perfume and fragrant herbs on one another 

to symbolize blessings and good luck in the new year. 

SPRING CLEANING AND YOU 

Why do we feel the need to clean our environments with the coming of spring? Part 

of it is the urge to finally open all windows and clear the winter mustiness that has 

settled there. On a psychological level, we are also sweeping out the dark winter mood 

in order to welcome the positivity of spring energy, just like ancient civilizations did. 

In this way, a clean house brings us peace of mind and clarity. But how do we start this 

immense spring cleaning ritual? The answer is quite simple: make a list and divide it 

up into smaller tasks, so you can feel the satisfaction of ticking off each item. What 

follows is an example of a spring cleaning outline: 

1. CLEAN WINDOWS 

Start with one of the most visible issues—when the spring sun starts shining through 

your windows, you can see every bit of dirt on them. Combine water, distilled vinegar 

and liquid dish soap in a spray bottle and spray it against the glass. Use a fibre cloth to 

wipe it on, and a squeegee to remove excess liquid. 

2. DECLUTTER 

Before you do a deep clean, declutter it first. This means 

throwing away anything you haven’t used in the past twelve 

months. Avoid throwing odds and ends into a drawer, 

because they will eventually find their way out and create a 

mess. 

3. CLEAN ROOMS FROM TOP TO BOTTOM 

Spring cleaning is about the things that you overlook during 

your day-to-day cleaning routines. Vacuum the ceiling, clean 

the lamps, and use a damp cloth to clean walls and doors. 

Don’t forget light switches and door handles—these are 

typically covered with grime. 

4. RENEW YOUR BEDROOM 

Organize your closets and prepare for a wardrobe transition. 

Remove all clothing you haven’t been wearing in the last 

twelve months and put them in bags for good will. Take your 

curtains and your winter coats to the dry cleaner. Combat any 

stale winter odors with scented candles or fragrance sticks. 

5. A FRESH LOOK IN THE BATHROOM 

Toilets, sinks and tubs get cleaned regularly, but spring 

cleaning involves a different approach. Discard outdated or 

unused products. Replace old towels with new, luxurious 

ones. Reorganize your shelves for maximum efficiency. 

6. DEEP CLEAN YOUR KITCHEN 

Search your cupboards and pantry and discard any outdated 

products. Replace dish and tea towels as well as the mops 

you’ve been using the entire year. Clean the fridge and defrost 

the freezer. Make sure you check all the food and throw out 

anything that has been lying around for too long. 

7. DON’T FORGET THE OUTSIDE 

Clean your patio furniture and wash pillow covers. Use a 

vinegar spray to dissolve green build up on teak and wooden 

furniture. Throw out any pots or other garden accessories 

that haven’t survived the winter in tact. 

By creating a spring cleaning ritual out of these seven steps, 

you’ll notice that it isn’t nearly as daunting as it sounds. And 

when it’s all said and done, you will be ready to welcome the 

coming year with a clear mind and an uplifted spirit.

Network is a resource with many 

documents available located within our group files to help those who have 

both lost and found pets, as well as lists of related, pet service providers. 

For instance, did you know animal control in Fort Bend County is all 

the way down in Rosenberg, but if you live in the Harris County portion 

of Cinco and your dog is picked up, it is taken all the way up by I-45 and 

Canino Road - near Little York Road? (The worst scenario is if a dog that 

lives in one county ends up being picked up in the other county.) Also, if 

your pet is brought to one of these locations, you likely will only have three 

days to find it before it is released for adoption OR euthanized. If you wait 

to see if your animal returns home on its own, it might be too late! Please 

use this new group as needed and share our page with Facebook friends! 

We are looking for volunteers to help administer this group and 

also people that would be willing to foster animals found in Cinco 

until their owners are found, rather than the animals being brought

After winning the TAPPS Eastern Region Division II Swim Meet last year 

and moving up to Division I this year, the boys’ swim team repeated as 

Region Champions, beating last year’s champion St. Thomas 123-112. 

Tomball Concordia Lutheran was third with 108. The girls finished 6 th 

with excellent performances 

from the entire team. The girls 

had 68% lifetime best swims 

and the boys had 76%, for a 

combined team improvement 

of 72%.

More than 200 Houston-area students participated in the language 

competition and schools were allowed to send three students from 

each language level. Participants completed a language exam including 

reading, writing, listening and speaking. 

KATY ISD PARTNERS IN EDUCATION 

CELEBRATED MENTORS AT TIES & TIARAS 

Katy ISD celebrated the time, effort and heart of KEYS mentors - while 

supporting KEYS Scholarships - at Ties & Tiaras on March 9 th from 5:30- 

7:30 PM at NOAH’S of Katy. This year’s festivities included honoring the 

2017 Mentors of the Year and KEYS Scholarship Sponsors, along with 

entertainment provided by a stringed ensemble from Tompkins High 

School. Also, joining the event was the Cinco Ranch High School student 

artists who created this year’s KEYS scholarship masterpiece 

Every year Ties & Tiaras honors Katy ISD’s family of mentors, who 

spend up to one hour each week with their students. In particular, the 

event recognizes a few individuals who’ve sustained relationships and 

dedication to the KEYS program year after year. The Katy ISD 2017 Mentors 

of the Year and their respective KEYS campuses, were:

is a relationship initiative that matches a caring adult with a student on the 

brink of success for up to one hour a week, during the school day, during 

the school year. Piloted during the 1995-1996 school year, this program 

now extends to every campus in Katy ISD. KEYS is not a tutoring program, 

but rather a relationship program, with many mentors and their students

FIELDER ELEMENTARY SPRING CARNIVAL 

Fielder Elementary PTA is proud to present the 23 rd annual Spring carnival 

on Saturday, April 8 th , 2017 from 10 AM-2 PM. This year’s theme is 

“Carnival Go,” much like the popular Pokemon app our students enjoy 

playing. In keeping with tradition, our massive carnival takes over the 

entire school property 

New this year will be food truck alley where our Fielder Falcons, family, 

friends and neighbors can fill their bellies from trucks such as Katy’s very 

own Mas Fina Tex-Mex Kitchen and Mary Had a Little Party Old Time Soda 

Shoppe. We’ll also have snow cones, pizza, popcorn and all of our favorite 

carnival foods to enjoy. 

Families will also want to check out the class project auction! Every class, 

with the help of parent volunteers, will create a beautifully decorated art 

piece that is auctioned to the highest bidder. We even offer $1 entry raffle 

baskets which are nothing short of amazing! Nearly 20 baskets will be up 

for grabs with themes such as Minecraft, Nerf Wars, American Girl, an IPad, 

family travel, author signed books and of course, Pokemon!

Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls 

ages 4 to 18 for the SPRING Season. Games start on April 8, 2017. FFPS 

is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive 

youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, 

FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater 

Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including 

one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal 

playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive

Relay For Life is a community event benefiting the American Cancer 

Society and is the largest national fundraising event to end cancer. At

A fun, free opportunity to meet and learn more about the men and women 

who keep us safe. Harris County ESD 48 Fire Department (HCESD 48) is 

proud to announce the Second Annual Katy Area Safety Fest sponsored by 

Katy Mills. This year’s event will be held from 10 AM-2 PM, Saturday, April 

22, 2017, at Katy Mills Mall, 5000 Katy Mills Cir, Katy, TX 77494. The Katy 

Area Safety Fest is free to the public and will feature personnel, equipment 

and apparatus from the 20+ agencies that serve the greater Katy area. 

The Safety Festival’s purpose is to familiarize residents with the men 

and women who serve the greater Katy area, as well as the daily tasks 

of various agencies that protect community through a variety of fun, 

educational and high-energy activities. Whether fighting fires or engaging 

with and educating the residents we serve, HCESD 48 and our many 

safety partners understand just how much community awareness and 

involvement can prevent disasters or limit the extent of damage resulting 

from such emergencies. 

Festival activities will include: 

• Fire and EMS exhibits and demonstrations, including car fire and 

extrication demos 

• Life Flight helicopter landing and viewing 

• Law enforcement exhibits, vehicles and live demonstrations 

• Ladder truck tours and ambulance tours 

• “Firefighters Combat Challenge” as well as a “Jr. Firefighter Challenge” 

• An inflatable play area and kids activities 

• Food and refreshment vendors

income-tax-preparation assistance for low-income taxpayers. Patrons 

should bring the following information to the session if possible: photo 

ID, Social Security card(s) for self, spouse and all dependents, last year’s 

tax return, W-2, 1099s and any other compensation received in 2016, 

unemployment compensation statements and any other documents that 

are necessary to complete your return. This service is free and open to the 

public on a first-come, first-served basis. Income-tax forms will no longer 

be available at the libraries, but patrons may use the libraries’ computers 

and printers to download and print out the forms from the IRS website, 

www.irs.gov, during regular library hours. A library card is needed to use 

the printers and the cost to print is 10¢ per black-and-white page.

April Gardening Tips 

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many 

pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ 

mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, 

termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future 

pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes 

exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home 

and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. 

Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” 

back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” 

wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to 

the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most 

conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high 

against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. 

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates 

overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest 

onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests 

from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and 

puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. 

Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown 

patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in 

some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) 

fertilization c) weed control. 

Most important is proper watering: 

• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) 

• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. 

• In severe drought, water every 5 th day. 

• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. 

• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and 

more drought resistant roots. 

• Less watering also saves you money!!

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. 

That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities

Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help 

prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The yearlong 

course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National 

Council for Jewish Women (NCJW).

KATY AREA RIDE SERVICE NEEDS YOUR HELP DRIVING OLDER ADULTS 

Katy Area Ride Service (KARS) is looking for your assistance in transporting 

seniors in need of personal (hair salon, bank, classes, volunteering, 

visiting a loved one, taking a pet to the vet) and occasional medical rides. 

Rides are provided in your personal vehicles to passengers who are age 

65+ and ambulatory (not wheelchair bound, may use walking aids). Time 

commitment is flexible and you choose the Katy territory in which you want 

to drive. Volunteers do not provide rides that go east of Barker Cypress, 

north of Clay Road, west of FM 1463 or south of Bellaire Blvd at the Grand 

Parkway. Benefits to Volunteer Drivers include the opportunity to help 

seniors retain independent living, dignity and freedom. Drivers tell us the 

day(s) and times they are able to drive. Drivers choose if they wait for the 

senior or return later to pick them up. Drivers must be between 21 years 

of age and 78 years of age with a good driving record, pass a background 

check and show proof of insurance coverage (state minimums) as required

NATIONAL SUPERHERO DAY 

National Superhero Day is observed annually on April 

28 th . This is a day to honor superheroes, both real and 

fictional. Batman, Superman, Captain America, Wonder 

Woman, Iron Man, Hulk and Spiderman are just some of 

the superheroes whose names we recognize. Even though 

they are fictional, these superheroes are great role models 

for our children. They serve and protect while fighting 

evil. Our real-life superheroes may not have super powers 

or wear capes, but they are also great role models who 

serve and protect while fighting evil. Military personnel, 

police officers and firefighters are just a few of the 

heroes who protect us on a daily basis. Take your favorite 

superhero to lunch and say thank you for all

Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical 

balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, 

we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps 

guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the 

programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. 

In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents 

at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. 

Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and 

volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston 

Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding

INGREDIENTS: 

3 cups all-purpose flour 

1 teaspoon baking soda 

1/2 teaspoon baking powder 

1 teaspoon salt 

2 cups sugar 

1 cup vegetable oil 

3 eggs 

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

1 cup sour cream 

2 cups shredded zucchini 

1 cup chopped walnuts 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease two 

9x5 inch loaf pans. In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, 

baking soda and salt. 

In a large bowl, beat together the sugar and oil. Stir in the eggs one 

at a time, beating well with each addition, then stir in the vanilla. 

Blend this mixture into the flour mixture, alternately with the sour 

cream, stir just to combine. Fold in the zucchini and nuts, mixing just 

enough to evenly combine. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake in 

preheated oven for 80 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the 

center of the loaf comes out clean.

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets. 

In a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar and white 

sugar. Beat in the eggs, one at a time then stir in the vanilla. Combine 

the flour, baking soda and cinnamon, stir into the creamed mixture. 

Blend in the oatmeal and toffee bits. Drop by rounded spoonfuls 

onto the prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the 

preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes 

before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

2 sticks butter 

32 onions sticks butter chopped 

23 bell onions peppers chopped chopped

1/2 1 TBS. cup chopped flour parsley 

11/2 pint cup Half flour & Half 

1# 1 pint Velveeta, Half & cubed Half 

24 1# oz. Velveeta, Fettucine cubed 

Chicken 24 oz. Fettucine broth 

1/4 Chicken cup chopped broth jalapenos (optional)

Melt butter and saute onions, peppers & celery until tender. Add
