It’s probably safe to say that most young 

boys love worms. It’s equally safe to say that 

homeowners who have had to deal with 

tropical sod webworms are probably not as 

enthusiastic about the creatures. 

Unfortunately, Nottingham Country had 

quite a few yards affected by sod webworms last year. St. Augustine laws 

in the Houston area can be particularly susceptible to infestations. 

“With the temperature and the moisture, it was like a perfect storm and 

we really got nailed,” said Paul Winski, a county extension agent who is 

part of the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension. “In prior years, the population 

wasn’t that bad and we didn’t have to treat for them.” 

Let’s take a look at a few basic facts first and then we can talk about 

treatment options. 

• The sod webworm (1 inch long) is the larval stage of a small whitebrown 

moth (1/2” to ¾” long). 

• The worms spend the winter in silk-lined tunnels near the soil surface 

and resume feeding in the April/May* timeframe. 

• In June*, adult moths emerge and begin mating (note: the moths do 

not feed on our lawns). 

• Shortly thereafter, females lay several hundred new eggs that may 

hatch into larvae within a week. 

• There are two to three generations per year in most areas. 

*Please note that, with our wacky Texas weather, these timeframes can 

vary slightly. 

Sod webworm larvae prefer areas of your lawn that are hot and dry 

during daylight hours, so they are most prevalent in areas that receive 

lots of sunlight and/or south-facing slopes. It follows, then, that July and 

August are when lawns are most susceptible to the webworms. If the 

issue is not addressed, damage can spread quickly. 

If your yard has a lot of shade, consider yourself lucky - heavily shaded 

areas are seldom attacked. 

Since we have a pretty decent size bird population in Nottingham, you may 

be wondering why the birds aren’t eating the larvae. Winski says it’s because 

pest populations can get way ahead of what predators are able to consume. 

How do you know if you have a problem? “If you walk through your lawn 

and you see moths flying up in front of you, then you know you should 

treat,” Winski says. “You won’t be able to see the eggs or larvae, as they’re 

difficult to see. They are pretty far down there.” 

For the same reason, Winski said you don’t have to worry about 

spreading the eggs as you’re walking in your lawn. That is not a common 

occurrence. Unfortunately, Winski said it’s too hard to predict whether 

the worms will be a problem again this year. Your best bet is to check 

your yard frequently in June. 

If you decide to treat, the best time to do so is also in June. You can 

either use chemical-based products with Pyrethroids or natural products 

with Spinosad. Either are available at your local garden store or home 

improvement center. Several sources suggested that a simple liquid soap 

wash is an effective method of dislodging the larvae and eggs and then 

you just rake the remains off your lawn. Other good natural solutions can 

be found on the Planet Natural website (www.planetnatural.com). 

Please keep in mind that preventative measures are much less expensive 

than replacing all of your grass. Our deed restrictions do require nicelooking 

lawns. The HOA understands that replacing sod is an expensive 

and time-consuming endeavor, but we are happy to work with you if you 

will communicate with us that you are addressing the issue. 

FREEZE KILLS 

Clearly, many of us lost valuable shrubbery on our one wintery weekend. 

Oftentimes, we have to leave plants in place for a few weeks (or longer) 

to see if they have survived the freeze. The HOA understands this fact and 

obviously won’t take any action during that time period. However, please 

remove dead plants before spring rolls around. Our deed restrictions do 

state that our yards have to look spiffy and we will be contacting any 

homeowners who are negligent in this area. 

SWIM MEET DATES 

The Nottingham Country Tidal Waves swim team would like to announce 

the dates of its home swim meets for the 2017 season. They are: May 25 th , 

June 6 th and June 20 th . Please be advised that our swimmers generally 

start to arrive around 4:30 PM and the streets around the Mason Creek 

pool are full throughout the evening. We apologize for any inconvenience 

to our neighbors and we appreciate your patience as we support the 200 

Nottingham children as they compete for our team.

HEAVY TRASH PICK UP DATE SCHEDULED 

Once again, NCCIA and MCUD will sponsor a heavy trash pickup day on 

Saturday, April 8 th between the hours of 8 AM and 2 PM. The location will 

be the back parking lot of Nottingham Elementary School off of Rennie 

and Withington. Personnel will be onsite to assist with unloading. All 

heavy trash with the exception of tires and household chemicals will be 

accepted. This is the time to clean out the garage, backyard or home and 

have it hauled away for free. We also notice many driveways in need to 

some “house cleaning” so this is the time to do it! 

The next Heavy Trash pickup day will most likely be in October.

Nothing too unusual last month. We did have one auto theft that did 

occur. A solicitor said he parked his truck on Britannia and started 

walking the neighborhood and putting out flyers. When he returned 5 

hours later his truck was gone. Deputy Glover recovered his truck on 

Devereux Ct. that afternoon. The other incident that residents were

inquiring about was the fight between two neighbors. One neighbor was 

intoxicated and arguing with his wife in the front yard when the neighbor 

attempted to intervene and help. The intoxicated individual started 

assaulting his neighbor. Deputies took the intoxicated male to jail for

NOTTINGHAM COUNTRY GARDEN CLUB 

On Thursday, April 6, 2017, Nottingham Country Garden Club (NCGC) 

will feature Bart Brechter, as a guest speaker. Bart is the Curator of 

Gardens for Bayou Bend. He will speak about the Museum and Garden 

History and Azaleas. 

Meet and greet time begins at 9:30 AM and the program will begin at 

10 AM, followed by the NCGC business meeting. Please join us at the 

Municipal Utility Building #81 at 805 Hidden Canyon Drive, Katy, 77450.

Monthly meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month 

from September through May. We welcome all people interested in 

gardening and gardening related topics. We serve the West Houston 

and Katy areas. You do not have to live in the Nottingham Country

affiliated with the Houston Federation of Garden Clubs, the Texas State 

Garden Clubs and the National Garden Clubs. The purpose of the club 

is to promote the beautification of our community, support local and 

national educational and civic organizations and educate the community 

about our environment. Donations from the NCGC are funded by various 

projects throughout the year.

as I dislike telling that to someone who has taken the time out of his

CELEBRATED MENTORS AT TIES & TIARAS 

Katy ISD celebrated the time, effort and heart of KEYS mentors - while 

supporting KEYS Scholarships - at Ties & Tiaras on March 9 th from 5:30- 

7:30 PM at NOAH’S of Katy. This year’s festivities included honoring the 

2017 Mentors of the Year and KEYS Scholarship Sponsors, along with 

entertainment provided by a stringed ensemble from Tompkins High 

School. Also, joining the event was the Cinco Ranch High School student 

artists who created this year’s KEYS scholarship masterpiece Every year 

Ties & Tiaras honors Katy ISD’s family of mentors, who spend up to one 

hour each week with their students. In particular, the event recognizes 

a few individuals who’ve sustained relationships and dedication to the 

KEYS program year after year. The Katy ISD 2017 Mentors of the Year and 

their respective KEYS campuses, were:

Katy ISD recently announced that McRoberts Elementary Principal Dr. 

Kwabena Mensah and Mayde Creek Junior High Principal Dr. David Paz, 

were chosen for Katy ISD’s Region IV Principal Recognition. 

Mensah and Paz were selected by their peers for their ability and 

willingness to make meaningful contributions to education, their desire 

for continuous personal and professional growth and their ability to 

inspire Katy ISD students and staff. 

They will be recognized along with campus administrators from school 

districts in the surrounding area at the Region IV Principal Recognition 

ceremony on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at Hotel ZaZa.

Since its inception in 2006, the KEYS Scholarship Fund has awarded 

over $300,000 to graduating KEYS seniors. KEYS - Keep Encouraging 

Youth toward Success - is a relationship initiative that matches a caring 

adult with a student on the brink of success for up to one hour a week, 

during the school day, during the school year. Piloted during the 1995- 

1996 school year, this program now extends to every campus in Katy ISD. 

KEYS is not a tutoring program, but rather a relationship program, with 

many mentors and their students sustaining their friendship year after

KATY ISD STUDENTS 

BRING HOME TOP HONORS 

Katy ISD had 30 high school students win awards at the 2017 Farrington 

Contest and Awards, sponsored by the Houston Area Teachers of Foreign 

Language. This included six students who took home first place prizes 

in Spanish Advanced, Spanish Intermediate, German 2, German 3 

and American Sign Language. More than 200 Houston-area students 

participated in the language competition and schools were allowed to 

send three students from each language level. Participants completed a 

language exam including reading, writing, listening and speaking.

ELEMENTARY NEWS 

NCE INVITES KATY TO ITS “WONDERFUL 

CARNIVAL OF OZ,” FRIDAY, APRIL 7TH 

The 2017 Nottingham Country Elementary (NCE) Carnival is coming on 

April 7 th , from 5-8:30 PM. Everyone is invited, free of charge, to “Follow 

the Yellow Brick Road to Carnival!” The event will transport families 

to a strange, colorful world of magic and rainbows - smack dab in the 

middle of the Emerald City! Carnival is one of two annual fundraisers 

for NCE and typically attracts hundreds of Katy residents and their 

families. It will take place at the NCE campus, 20500 Kingsland Blvd. 

Katy, Texas. Activities will include many games and rides, including 

the Wizzer Ride (great for older kids and teens), the Extreme Quad 

Bungee Jump and the Wrecking Ball. Young attendees will enjoy 

the Trackless Train and kids of all ages can capture photos with 

their friends in the Wizard of Oz-themed Photo Booth. In the food 

and beverage department, NCE will be offering a sampling of culinary 

delights! Chick-Fil-A also returns this year, along with the Chick-Fil-A cow. 

Pizza and Tutti Frutti for dessert also will be available. 

Don’t forget the Silent Auction, bound to tantalize with themed baskets 

from each NCE class, as well as parties, the much-anticipated kickball game 

and the wildly popular Silly String Wars. Previous auctions have included 

a weekend getaway in a Galveston condo! Stay tuned to NCE’s Facebook 

page for details on this year’s auction items! Kids are invited to wear Wizard 

of Oz costumes to the Carnival - as a reminder to everyone that kindness 

is empowering! And everyone is encouraged to wear their dancing shoes 

(from ruby slippers to sneakers) and participate in the Carnival Dance 

Contest. Prizes for 1 st and 2 nd place will be awarded! Volunteers from Taylor 

High School will be lending a helping hand to this year’s event and many 

local businesses have shown their support of NCE by sponsoring this year’s 

Carnival. All sponsorship dollars are applied toward purchases to improve 

the school. Tickets for rides and activities can be purchased at the door 

on the night of the event. A 40-ticket card will cost $20 and single tickets 

will cost $1 each. So mark your calendars to get the heck out of Kansas on 

Friday, April 7 th . We’ll see you…over the rainbow!

AHFC is pleased to offer the Summer Camp Series at multiple campuses in

Fundamental Camp (Ages 5-9) or the Canes Skills & Drills Camp (Ages 10-16).

SPRING SOCCER SIGN UPS -

Katy/Fulshear/West Houston/Westpark Beltway 

Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls 

ages 4 to 18 for the SPRING Season. Games start on April 8, 2017. FFPS is 

a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive youth 

sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, FFPS has 

grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater Houston 

area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including one practice 

per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal playing time and 

play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive coaching and more. 

No tryouts are required. Go to www.FFPS.org to sign up. Registration fee 

includes a full uniform (jersey, shorts and socks), trophy, trained positive 

coaches, nice fields and background checks on all volunteers. Coaches will 

call players to schedule practice by April 4 th . Practice times and location will 

be determined by the coach and team. The schedule includes eight games, 

played locally on Saturdays, April 8 th to May 27 th . Our Katy league plays at 

George Bush Park - FFPS Soccer Complex (20150 Westheimer Parkway). Our

KATY AREA RUNNING CLUB 

The Katy Area Running Club is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation which 

exists to serve people living in and around Katy, Texas who have an interest 

in running. We are a community of people of all ages, backgrounds,

is on group runs, having fun, socializing and sharing our knowledge and

American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Katy 

Relay For Life is a community event benefiting the American Cancer 

Society and is the largest national fundraising event to end cancer. At 

Relay For Life we Celebrate the survivors, Remember loved ones lost and 

Fight Back against the disease. 

This year Relay for Life in Katy will take place next on Saturday, April 1 st , 

4 PM-12 AM at Katy City Park. Each year there is a theme and as the event 

falls on April Fool’s Day this year, it is appropriately themed… “Let’s Make 

A Fool Out of Cancer.” We would love for you to get involved and help us 

reach our goal!

ANNUAL IMPACT A HERO 5K 

An event that brings the community and combat veterans and their 

families together. Registration is now open for the 13 th Annual Impact a 

Hero 5K, one of Impact a Hero’s major fundraising events of the year. This 

year, the race will be held May 20, 2017 at the Constellation Field and 

will feature the traditional 5K Run/Walk/Wheel and Kids 1K beginning at 

7 AM. 

The 5K registration is $25 for untimed and $35 for timed. The 5K wheel 

is $25. The Kids 1K is $15. Prices increase on May 13 th and again on 

race day. Cash prizes will be awarded for the Men’s Open, Men’s Master, 

Women’s Open and Women’s Master categories. Top fundraisers will

SAFETY FEST SATURDAY, APRIL 22nd 

A fun, free opportunity to meet and learn more about the men and women 

who keep us safe. Harris County ESD 48 Fire Department (HCESD 48) is 

proud to announce the Second Annual Katy Area Safety Fest sponsored by 

Katy Mills. This year’s event will be held from 10 AM-2 PM, Saturday, April 

22, 2017, at Katy Mills Mall, 5000 Katy Mills Cir, Katy, TX 77494. The Katy Area 

Safety Fest is free to the public and will feature personnel, equipment and 

apparatus from the 20+ agencies that serve the greater Katy area. The Safety 

Festival’s purpose is to familiarize residents with the men and women who 

serve the greater Katy area, as well as the daily tasks of various agencies 

that protect community through a variety of fun, educational and highenergy 

activities. Whether fighting fires or engaging with and educating the 

residents we serve, HCESD 48 and our many safety partners understand just 

how much community awareness and involvement can prevent disasters or 

limit the extent of damage resulting from such emergencies. 

Festival activities will include: 

• Fire and EMS exhibits and demonstrations, including car fire and 

extrication demos 

• Life Flight helicopter landing and viewing 

• Law enforcement exhibits, vehicles and live demonstrations

Houston Wing - Commemorative Air Force 

2017 Open House & Vintage Aircraft Fly-In 

April 22-23, 2017 will be a weekend dedicated in recognition of the 

70 th anniversary the formation of the United States Air Force, as the 

Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Houston Wing presents its annual 


Open House at the West Houston Airport. This event provides a rare 

opportunity for the public of all ages to immerse themselves in the sights 

and sounds of WWII and other authentic vintage military aircraft, which 

played a huge role in our American history. 

In addition to aircraft, several historic military vehicles will be on display 

as well as a very unique anti-aircraft gun trailer exhibit from the Battleship 

Texas. Our hangar’s WWII museum will also be open and docents will be 

available to help all ages enjoy the museum’s displays. West Houston Airport 

is located at 18000 Groschke Rd., 2 miles north of I-10 and between Hwy. 6 

and Barker Cypress, will be the place to visit on Saturday and Sunday, April 

22 nd and 23 rd from 10 AM to 5 PM. The admission fee is $10 per car, which goes 

to supporting the organizations efforts to keep these aircraft flying. Food, 

drinks and souvenirs and vintage aircraft rides will be available for purchase.

NATURE PROGRAMS FOR PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN 

SATURDAYS IN NATURE 

This program is held on the second Saturday of each month at the Edith L. 

Moore Nature Sanctuary. Arrive anytime between 9 and 11:30 AM. The program 

ends at 12 noon. A guided nature walk will begin at 10 AM. No reservations 

required. Donations are encouraged. This is a “whole family” program; parents 

or other adult guardians should participate with their children. Upcoming 

programs include April program on Bird Watching (Build a Bird Feeder). 

THE TITMOUSE CLUB 

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 

sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is 

offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from 

mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 

440 Wilchester Boulevard. Each week features a different nature theme 

and may include nature talks, stories, hands-on activities and walks in

5-session card can be purchased for $20. The child must be accompanied

Nature Explorers Club is designed for school-age children (ages 6-10,

we will explore a different ecology topic, focusing on our own native 

plants and animals. We will make a craft to take home, go on a nature 

hike, dip-net for fish and tadpoles in the ponds and get to know the plants

April 1 st -2 nd - Houston Children’s Festival at Tranquility Park,

April 3 rd -8 th - The Bayou City Book Festival is a new initiative 

coming out of Lone Star College’s (LSC) Center for Civic 

Engagement. The Center desires to effectively and efficiently

venue for nationally and internationally known authors to speak 

to audiences about unique ideas, meet with attendees on an 

individual basis, provide free literary programming, promote

April 4 th - The Menu of Menus® Extravaganza is one of Houston’s

April 8 th - The Houston Art Parade will be in Downtown Houston

Saturday, April 3 rd at 8 AM, the bus departs from the Maud Marks Library 

for a fun-filled day at the San Jacinto Monument. We will spend the entire 

day driving around wildflower country. Two painted churches in the area
