2017 SUNDOWN GLEN BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
Your Board of Directors are residents of Sundown Glen and volunteer
their time to conduct the business of the association and to insure the
neighborhood remains a desirable place to call home. If you have any
questions, concerns or suggestions, we’d love to hear from you.
COMMUNICATION
We would like to encourage every resident to handle concerns through
the appropriate channels. If you have a problem with the neighborhood,
trash service, etc., please contact RealManage, EcoWaste, etc. directly
and avoid posting negative comments on social media. Complaints
being posted in this manner do not reach the people that need to know
to address your concerns.
DEED RESTRICTION VIOLATIONS & COSTS
Do Not Ignore Deed Restriction Violations Notices. Pursuing violations is
one of the larger expenses in the HOA budget - Every single letter mailed
out costs you and the HOA and your money.
DEED RESTRICTION VIOLATIONS
Whether you are a homeowner or a renter, you are responsible for
maintaining the property… take pride in the dwelling you call home!
Most Common Violations:
• Power wash homes, driveways and fences to remove
any algae, rust and oil stains.
• Store your trash cans/bins out of street view on non-trash days.
• Do not store any items on the porch or side of your home
including grills, building & landscape materials.
• Yards must have grass growing, be free of weeds, must
be mowed AND edged regularly.
• Trim trees at least 9’ off the sidewalk and street and keep
shrubs neatly trimmed.
• Keep driveways, sidewalks and the street free of weeds.
• Maintain your home - this includes painting house, replacing
damaged doors and rotting wood, keeping gutters clean, etc.
• Vehicles that are inoperable, covered, have expired registration/
inspection stickers may not be parked in view from the street.
• Boats, trailers and campers may not be parked in view from the street
- must be stored off premise or inside garage.
Residents will receive a Courtesy Notice, a Violation Notice and a Final
Notice. If the violation is not resolved, the violator will be sent a Post
Final demand letters giving them 15 days to bring property into voluntary
compliance. After that time, properties still out of compliance will be
forwarded to the attorney for legal action and these costs/fees will be
billed and charged back to the homeowner. Please do your part keeping
your home and Sundown Glen a desired place to live.
NOTE: Residents - if you notice a violation, you may also contact
RealManage at 866-473-2573 or via email (with pictures, if possible) at
SUNGLEN@ciramail.com and report it! We can all work together to keep
Sundown Glen looking beautiful.
DELINQUENT HOA FEES
These fees are vital for your Board of Directors to conduct HOA business
in order to maintain all the amenities, facilities and services provided
within the community.
If you have a past due balance on your account, please remit these fees
ASAP and/or set up a payment plan to avoid having your account turned
over to the attorney. Delinquent accounts incur late fees and penalty/
interest charges.
2 Villages of Sundown Glen | April 2017

Villages of Sundown Glen News
Once the account gets turned over to the attorney, the costs of pursuing
the violation and attorney fees incurred by the HOA are charged
back to the homeowners account, which increases your outstanding
debt. These fees cannot be waived since they have already been
incurred and paid for.
The Board is aggressively pursuing delinquent accounts Please help
the HOA Board save YOUR money and avoid increased dues by following
the deed restriction guidelines set forth for Sundown Glen. If you
need a copy of the guidelines, they can be found on the RealManage
Resident Portal or by calling the service center.
NOTE - If you are a new homeowner, your mortgage company does not
escrow or pay these fees each year…the homeowner is responsible
for this payment each year.
CRIME WATCH INFORMATION
Harris County Sheriff’s Department at 713-221-6000. In case of an
emergency or to report a crime/incident in progress, call 911. Contact
the Sheriff Dept. FIRST to make sure a report is made and it’s in the
system. If you don’t call, there is no record of the problem and we
won’t get additional coverage and attention to the matter.
Neighborhood Info & Crime Watch Email List, please send your name and
street name to Diane Parker at dmparker64@comcast.net if you wish to be
added to this list to receive important safety information. Contact Diane
(Crime Watch Coordinator) AFTER you have called the Sheriff Department
and made a report to provide info to be distributed to residents. Together,
we can make a difference in keeping our neighborhood safe.
PERIMETER FENCES
PARKING
Residents should park all vehicles in your driveway, if possible.
DO NOT line both sides of the street. This will allow residents and
emergency vehicles to easily maneuver down the street and avoid
delays in response times. Ask your guests to park their car as close
to curb as possible when visiting. Reminder - vehicles parked in the
street must be parked with the direction of traffic and you may not
park within 15’ of a fire hydrant. Failure to abide by these rules may
result in a parking ticket being issued.
FAULTY STREET LIGHTS
Your annual homeowner’s fee pays for your street lights, whether
they work or not. If you notice a light that is out or malfunctioning,
please call 713-207-2222 or go to http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/
outage and turn in a report. When turning in the report, you will need
to provide the 6-digit pole number and/or the closest intersection
or address. We want all of our lights to work… a lighted area is a
safer area.
DISPOSAL OF SUBSTANCES IN STORM DRAINS
It is illegal to place anything in the street drains - Whether it’s paint,
oil, household chemicals, food, grass clippings or waste from your
family pet in the yard, storm water runoff forces these substances to
flow UNTREATED into area bayous, channels and rivers; ultimately
into Galveston Bay.
Please recycle or dispose of hazardous material properly to keep
our waterways clean and our environment healthy. Go to CleanWaterways.org
for more information on how to properly dispose of all
household hazardous waste.
This type of illegal activity is against Texas State Law and punishable
by a fine of $5,000 for each offense.
PLEASE CALL 281-398-8211 TO REPORT OFFENDERS.
ILLEGAL DUMPING
It is illegal to dump any yard waste or other materials in the parks or at
the cul-de-sacs by the bayou. Eco Waste will pick up almost any homeowner’s
(non-contractor) material if it is disposed of properly. Landscape
debris must be no larger than 4 inches in diameter. The branches may
not be longer than 4 feet in length and must be tied in bundles.
WHY IS APRIL 18TH THE TAX DEADLINE?
Tax day falls on April 18, 2017. That’s the deadline for filing taxes on
income earned in 2016. Usually, April 15th is the day taxes are due. But
in 2017, that falls on a Saturday. On Monday, the District of Columbia
celebrates Emancipation Day. That affects taxes the same way federal
holidays do. Emancipation Day is normally April 16th, but that’s a Sunday.
Therefore, the tax deadline is pushed out to the following Tuesday,
April 18th. That gives taxpayers three extra days to file their returns.
there are common characteristics found in those with this complex
disability. Briefly, these characteristics include:
Social Skills. People with autism have problems interacting with others;
autistic children do not have adequate playing and talking skills.
Mild symptoms on one end of the spectrum may be displayed through
clumsy behavior, being out of sync with those around them and
inappropriate or offensive comments being made. At the other end
of the spectrum an autistic person may not be interested in others.
Empathy. Empathy is the ability to recognize and understand the
feelings of another person. People with autism find it harder to show
empathy to others although they can be taught to acknowledge the
others feelings.
Physical Contact. In some cases, autistic people do not like physical
contact such as hugs, tickling or physical play with others.
Sudden Changes To Their Environment. A sudden change in the surrounding
environment may affect a person with autism. The could be
a loud noise, a change in intensity of lighting or even a change in smell.
The first National Autism Awareness Month was declared by the
Autism Society in April 1970. The aim of this month is educate the
public about autism. Autism is a complex mental condition and
developmental disability, characterized by difficulties in the way a
person communicates and interacts with other people. Autism can
be be present from birth or form during early childhood (typically
within the first three years). Autism is a lifelong developmental disability
with no single known cause. People with autism are classed
as having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the terms autism
and ASD are often used interchangeably. A wide spectrum disorder,
people will autism have set of symptoms unique to themselves, no
two people are the same.
Speech. Speech can be affected in people with autism. ‘Echolalia’
is a typical speech symptom in which the person repeats words and
phrases that they hear. The speech tone of an autistic person may
be monotonous. Where symptoms are more extreme, the person
may not speak.
Changes To Behavior and Routine. People with autism often display
repetitive behavior in which they repeat the same action many
times over. For example, a person with autism may repeatedly pace
around a room in a certain direction. Any change to their behavior
or routine can be unsettling for them. This could be a reordering of
daily activities such as when a person brushes their teeth, takes a
shower and has breakfast when they get up in the morning. Other
characteristics of autism include an unpredictable learning rate,
obsessions and physical tics.
Autism Is Widespread, Awareness About This Condition Is Not
In the United States, autism affects 1 in every 110 children. National
Autism Awareness Month aims to make the public more aware about
this widespread disability and the issues which arise in the autism community.
As about 1 in 150 people in America have autism, the chances
are that you know someone with this disability. A better informed public
will be more empathetic and supportive towards people with autism.
This month is backed by the Autism Society of America ,which undertake
a number of activities to raise awareness about autism. The Autism
Society has local chapters throughout the United States, which hold
special events throughout April. The ‘Puzzle Ribbon’ is the symbol for
Autism Awareness and is promoted by the Autism Society as means
of supporting awareness for autism. The Puzzle Ribbon may take the
form of a pin attached to clothing, a fridge magnet or a sticker and are
available to purchase from the Autism Society website.
The Autism Society of America also run a year long campaign through
their 1 Power 4 Autism initiative, in which people are encouraged to hold
events to raise awareness and support for those affected by autism.
KATY AREA RETIRED EDUCATORS(KARE) ANNUAL AUCTION
On February 8, 2017, the Katy Area Retired Educators(KARE) hosted their
annual Scholarship Chocolate Auction with guest speaker Helen Blocker
Payne, “The Butterfly Lady.”
Following an informative presentation about Butterflies, from Helen
Blocker Payne, “The Butterfly Lady,” The Katy Area Retired Educators
(KARE) members closed out their February meeting with a Chocolate
Auction to support their Scholarship Program, raising $673. Before the
meeting begins, individuals bring chocolate desserts and gift baskets,
then fill out a silent auction sheet naming the item with a suggested
price. As members arrive, they shop the tables of goodies and bid on
items they want. All proceeds benefit the Scholarship Fund, which subsists
on monthly drawings for gift baskets, a collection of loose change
and cash donations. If sufficient funds are collected, we hope to provide
three $1,000 scholarships to students graduating this Spring who intend
to pursue a career in education. Scholarship Applications are currently
available at each high school in Katy ISD. For more information about
the Katy Area Retired Educators check out our website at
COOKING WITH HERBS
Cooking with herbs adds pizazz to all
dishes and even fresh beverages:
• Basil - sweet, Genoese, Asian variety;
great with pesto or spaghetti
sauces; tomatoes, meats, seafood, curry
pastes, stir fries, soups
and stews
• Parsley - sauces, salads and sprinkled
over dishes at the end of cooking for
a flash of green and a fresh taste
• Cilantro - bright refreshing flavor and
a staple of Latin and Asian cooking
• Mint - cooling, peppery bite to savory dishes from the Middle East
and North Africa; fresh salads, liven up a sauce; used to temper
spicy curries
• Rosemary - soups, meats, stews or sauces
• Thyme - can be paired with nearly any kind of meat, poultry,
fish or vegetable
• Sage - dishes with pork, beans, potatoes, cheese
or in the classic sage and brown butter sauce
• Chives - add a flavor similar to onion without the bite
• Dill - add a pleasant anise-like flavor to seafood,
soups, salads and sauces; compliment foods like fish and shellfish
• Oregano - a pungent herb primarily found
in Mediterranean and Mexican cuisines
THE WILD WORLD OF WORMS
It’s probably safe to say
that most young boys
love worms. It’s equally
safe to say that homeowners
who have had
to deal with tropical sod
webworms are probably
not as enthusiastic
about the creatures.
St. Augustine laws in the
Houston area can be particularly susceptible to infestations.
“With the temperature and the moisture, it was like a perfect storm
and we really got nailed,” said Paul Winski, a county extension agent
who is part of the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension. “In prior years, the
population wasn’t that bad and we didn’t have to treat for them.”
Let’s take a look at a few basic facts first and then we can talk about
treatment options.
• The sod webworm (1 inch long) is the larval stage of a small
white-brown moth (1/2” to ¾” long).
• The worms spend the winter in silk-lined tunnels near the soil
surface and resume feeding in the April/May* timeframe.
• In June*, adult moths emerge and begin mating (note: the moths
do not feed on our lawns).
• Shortly thereafter, females lay several hundred new eggs that
may hatch into larvae within a week.
• There are two to three generations per year in most areas.
*Please note that, with our wacky Texas weather, these time
frames can vary slightly.
17

Sod webworm larvae prefer areas of your lawn that are hot and dry
during daylight hours, so they are most prevalent in areas that receive
lots of sunlight and/or south-facing slopes. It follows, then, that July and
August are when lawns are most susceptible to the webworms. If the
issue is not addressed, damage can spread quickly.
If your yard has a lot of shade, consider yourself lucky - heavily shaded
areas are seldom attacked.
Since we have a pretty decent size bird population, you may be wondering
why the birds aren’t eating the larvae. Winski says it’s because
pest populations can get way ahead of what predators are able to consume.
How do you know if you have a problem? “If you walk through your
lawn and you see moths flying up in front of you, then you know you
should treat,” Winski says. “You won’t be able to see the eggs or larvae,
as they’re difficult to see. They are pretty far down there.”
For the same reason, Winski said you don’t have to worry about
spreading the eggs as you’re walking in your lawn. That is not a common
occurrence.
Unfortunately, Winski said it’s too hard to predict whether the worms
will be a problem again this year. Your best bet is to check your yard
frequently in June.
Family Owned
If you decide to treat, the best time to do so is also in June. You can
either use chemical-based products with Pyrethroids or natural products
with Spinosad. Either are available at your local garden store or
home improvement center. Several sources suggested that a simple
liquid soap wash is an effective method of dislodging the larvae and
eggs and then you just rake the remains off your lawn. Other good
natural solutions can be found on the Planet Natural website (www.
planetnatural.com).
Please keep in mind that preventative measures are much less expensive
than replacing all of your grass. Our deed restrictions do require
nice-looking lawns.
APRIL OBSERVANCES & FUN FACTS
Birthstone: Diamond/Flower: Daisy or Sweet Pea
Pisces Aries (March 21 st -April 20 th )/Taurus (April 21 st -May 20 th )
April was formerly the second month in the ancient Roman year, when
March began the calendar. The real origin of its name has been lost.
The most common theory is that Aprilis is derived from the Latin verb
Aperire, to open, as the opening or blossoming, of trees and flowers.
HEALTH NUMBERS TO KNOW NOW
Take control of your health by learning these six numbers; they’ll help
with everything from losing weight to protecting your heart:
1) Daily calorie needs: Most women need 2,000 calories a day for good
health and men generally need about 2,550. One way to work out your
daily calorie needs is to multiply your weight in pounds by 13 to 15,
depending on your activity level. But roughly, that’s 300 to 400 calories
for breakfast, 500 to 600 for lunch, 600 to 700 for dinner and two or three
snacks of roughly 100 to 200 calories each. Trying to lose weight? Eat
roughly 500 calories less.
2) Waist size: For women, health risk begins to rise when your waist is
more than 35 inches. For men, risk increases with a measurement when
your waist is over 40 inches.
3) LDLs & HDLs: Aim for total cholesterol below 5.2 mmol/l (below 5
mmol/l if you have heart disease or diabetes) and LDL cholesterol levels
below 3.5 mmol/l or below 2 mmol/l if you have a history of heart
disease. A healthy HDL level is 1.3 mmol/l or above.
4) Blood pressure: A reading of 140/90 mm Hg or more is considered
high and if it’s between 120/80 and 139/89, you may still be at risk and
should be taking steps to prevent the development of hypertension.
5) Triglyceride levels: A normal triglyceride reading is less than 1.7
mmol/l. Your doctor will advise you how often you should have your
triglycerides checked.
6) Morning pulse rate: a normal resting pulse rate is 60 to 90 beats per
minute. People who are fit tend to have lower resting pulse rates because
their heart muscles are in good shape. But if you don’t exercise
regularly and your heart rate is lower than the normal range, tell your
doctor-it could be a sign of heart disease.
FUN FACTS ABOUT EASTER CELEBRATIONS
As a celebration that includes chocolate and bunnies, Easter is at the
top of my favorite holiday list. Check out these fun facts about the
religious holiday turned commercial powerhouse.
• The tallest Easter egg chocolate was made in Italy in 2011.
It stood at 10.39 meters and weighed an astounding 7,200 kg.
• The art of painting eggs is called pysanka, which originated
in Ukraine
• The term Easter gets its name from Eastre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess
who symbolizes the hare and the egg.
• The exchange or giving of Easter eggs actually dates back to before
Easter and the giving of eggs is actually considered a symbol of
rebirth in many cultures.
• Americans buy more than 700 million marshmallow Peeps during
Easter? This makes Peeps the most popular non-chocolate
Easter candy.
• Americans consume more than 16 million jelly beans during this
holiday. That is enough jelly beans to circle the globe not once,
not twice, but three times.
• Seventy-six percent of people eat the ears on the chocolate
bunny first, 5 percent go for the feet and 4 percent for the tail.
• During the holiday, more than 90 million chocolate bunnies, 91.4
billion eggs and 700 million Peeps are produced each year in
the United States alone.
• Next to Halloween, Easter is the biggest candy-consuming holiday
of the year.
• An estimated $14.7 billion is spent in total for Easter in the US.
• The Easter egg is said to symbolize and represent joy, celebration
and new life.
• Workers in Birmingham, who make the famous Cadbury Creme
Egg, produce more than 1.5 million egg delights a year.
PET ANNOUNCEMENTS
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents.
While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many
children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could
result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept
under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County,
Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor
or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat
to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following
circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in
length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable
of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does
not have access to sidewalk or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you
work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly
restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for
all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only
protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also
the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued
for failing to properly restrain their pet.
To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained
please contact:
5 STEPS TO A HAPPIER HEALTHIER PET
1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked.
3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations.
4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they
can be returned to you if lost.
5. Spay or neuter your pet.
SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE
It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but please have courtesy to
please scoop when your pet poops during your walks. Throughout
the community trails, you will find areas to toss your pet’s poopage
and in some areas, there are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags
- you’ll be recycling at the same time! Many of your neighbors work
hard with their lawncare and landscaping. Come with a scooper and
a recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking up after your pets
shows your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard
to maintaining their grass!
PREVENT
EXCESSIVE
BARKING!
Dogs left alone all day get
lonely, bored and restless.
Many find relief in barking.
Some respond noisily to any
and all activity. Nothing is
as annoying as incessant
barking-even for dog lovers.
If your dog is a yapper or
a yowler, please consider
some of these bark-abatement
ideas to keep the noise
down in your area. Your
neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Training not only
helps your dog, you’ll be
surprised how much it helps
you, too. You may get some
insight into why your dog
barks so much, or what it is
trying to communicate.
• Citronella collars.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors
or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street
noise, or leave a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a
cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting
service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility
once or twice a week.
THEY’RE COMING!
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
Without the benefit of Google maps or Waze, they travel thousands
of miles every year and know exactly where they’re going. Who are
we talking about? Migratory birds, of course. About 40% of the total
number of birds in the world migrate. Bar-headed geese are the highest
flying and can reach heights of 5.5 miles above sea level, the altitude
needed to clear the Himalayas in India. The Arctic tern travels the farthest-around
50,000 miles/year.
Why do millions of birds risk their lives to fly to different locations each
spring and fall? Simply stated, it’s for survival. Food availability is the
number one reason but migration is a risky business. Billions of birds are
killed along their journey. Harsh weather conditions is one reason but
urban sprawl tops the list. Up to one billion die every year due to window
collisions and about 7 million die from strikes with radio and TV towers.
But how do they know where they’re going? Researchers believe that
birds have a mineral substance above their beaks called magnetite. It
helps them determine the earth’s magnetic field so they can find true
north. They also use sunrise and sunset to distinguish between east
and west. Night flyers will use the moon and constellations to help
guide them. Birds also learn to recognize landmarks like mountains
and rivers. And how do they know when to go? Birds can “feel” when it’s
time to go. Outside temperatures and shorter daylight hours trigger a
hormone in birds. For a couple of weeks prior to leaving, they eat more
than usual and often times will double in weight. The extra weight will
help them survive their long journey.
Spring is in the air and many species of migratory birds are headed our
way to spend the summer. They’ll be busy building nests and raising
their young before heading out in the fall. TWRC Wildlife Center has a
great opportunity for all those interested in feeding and caring for baby
birds. It’s a wonderful experience! For more information, go to www.
We are asking you to send your favorite recipe with a little story behind
it. Each month we will select one or two recipes to featured in our
newsletters. If you have a photo of the dish or who makes it special send
along with the recipe to
recipes@krenekprinting.com
This month’s selection is Crawfish Fettuccine.
I had this delicious dish when I attended my brother’s wedding in Canton,
Mississippi. The event took place in September of 2004 with hurricane
Francis coming ashore. I almost didn’t get out of Houston because
of the major rain that hit here as well as Canton.
We attended a wedding luncheon in a truly old southern home where
the meal was prepared by some sweet southern women. There was so
much southern charm and the food was outstanding. After asking for
the recipe I received it in the mail by one of those sweet ladies.
With crawfish season here I thought I would share. Enjoy!
J. Stults
CRAWFISH FETTUCCINE
2 sticks butter
3 onions chopped
2 bell peppers chopped
3 stalks celery, chopped
3# peeled crawfish tails or Shrinp
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 TBS. chopped parsley
1/2 cup flour
1 pint Half & Half
1# Velveeta, cubed
24 oz. Fettucine
Chicken broth
1/4 cup chopped jalapenos (optional)
Melt butter and saute onions, peppers & celery until tender. Add crawfish,
simmer 10 min. stirring occasionally. Add garlic, parsley, flour and
cream - mix well. Simmer on low heat 30 min. stirring occasionally. Add
cheese & stir until melted.
Meanwhile cook noodles in chicken broth and creole seasoning, drain
and combine with sauce. Pour into 2 - 3 quart greased casseroles.
Bake uncovered @ 300 degrees 20 minutes or until heated.
Freezes well - 18-20 servings.
If you like a little extra kick add jalapenos to sauce. Also if you freeze it
and it seems stiff or dry when you reheat it, add about 1/4 cup Brandy
or any liquid will return texture.
TIP: If using frozen crawfish be sure to thaw and rinse before adding to
mixture.
April Gardening Tips
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many
pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch
that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc…
Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems.
Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation
edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick
and accurate termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18”
back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24”
wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the
slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive
to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your
homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates
overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught
of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the
summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your
valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown
patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some
areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization
c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5 th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger
and more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!
