3. Trust<strong>in</strong>g relationships<br />
Develop<strong>in</strong>g belong<strong>in</strong>g should not only happen amongst peer groups.<br />
Those who have a trust<strong>in</strong>g relationship with a mentor (or manager)<br />
are better able to take advantage of critical feedback and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
opportunities to learn [11]. The benefits of <strong>the</strong>se trust<strong>in</strong>g relationships<br />
are often greater amongst people from stigmatized groups.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> workplace, you can facilitate trust<strong>in</strong>g mentor relationships by:<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g a formal or <strong>in</strong>formal mentor program;<br />
––<br />
coach<strong>in</strong>g mentors and managers on how to get <strong>the</strong> best out<br />
of 1:1 meet<strong>in</strong>gs;<br />
––<br />
encourag<strong>in</strong>g mentors and managers to discuss engagement<br />
survey results with <strong>the</strong>ir teams.<br />

understand how managers were<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviewed a range of managers to<br />
identify <strong>the</strong> habits of exceptionally<br />
<strong>in</strong>clusive managers. In addition<br />
to mak<strong>in</strong>g time for connect<strong>in</strong>g<br />
through social activities, <strong>the</strong>y found<br />
successful managers lead by example.<br />
