It’s nearly the Easter holiday and hopefully the start of much nicer weather so that we can go outside exploring and investigating. This is the time of year when new life is starting everywhere. One of the things that we might then notice is lots of different kinds of eggs. Not only birds lay eggs of course – what else can you think of that lay eggs? What lays these? Or these? These eggs are from a creature with a shell. This creature can fly Can you work out what laid which egg? Some eggs are very small, you may need a magnifying glass to see them properly. Most insect and amphibians don’t make homes for their eggs, or look after them, but birds do. They make nests out of wool, twigs, mud, moss and lots of other things, to keep their eggs safe. If you find a nest hidden in your garden or a hedge, please don’t touch it, or the eggs inside – if you do the mother bird may leave them and the eggs will die. Just watch from a distance and you may see the chicks hatch, feed, grow and fly away. As it’s nearly Easter, enjoy your Easter eggs and leave the wild birds to look after their eggs! J
