HAPPY EASTER
ISSUE 369
APRIL 2017
Delabole.slatenewsletter@yahoo.co.uk
Hello from the Carnival Committee!
We have had two meetings this year and have been working hard to put
together the events for our wonderful fun filled Carnival Week in Delabole.
At our last meeting in March we were very pleased to welcome two new
committee members, Lisa Bates and Mel Vercoe.
Please help us carry on!!
We still have some places on the committee to fill so if you would be
interested in becoming a committee member, you can either call on
07798587608 or send an email to info@delabolecarnival.org.uk
Not long to go – are you working on your Carnival entry yet? Last year the entries were fabulous – not being biased
but Delabole Carnival was by far the most spectacular! Get your thinking caps on and make this year’s Carnival
procession the best ever, your effort is so very much appreciated....... Let’s be the talk of Cornwall again and have the
longest procession ever.
We are now looking for our 2017 Carnival Royalty - the application form is inside. We will be delighted to receive
applications for Fairy Queen from girls who will be aged between 4 and 11 years on Carnival Day, 16th July 2017, and
for Senior Queen from young ladies who will be aged 12 years or more on Carnival Day. All applicants must have
permission from a parent and must live in the PL33 postcode area, or attend Delabole CP School. We will provide you
with a trailer for you to decorate for a float, and a sum of money to help towards your dresses etc. All our past queens
have had great fun during their royal year and it is an honour to represent the village of Delabole at any other local
carnivals you are able to attend. As well as being in the limelight in our own carnival procession.....you get to choose
your own attendants! If you have any queries or concerns about what may be involved, pop in to see Elaine at Flowers
from Bruallen shop, and she will be able to help you.
Look out for our Big Breakfast fundraising event for 2017 which will be held in the Methodist Chapel on 22nd April.
Your support is vital....costs are going up and our Carnival is free to everyone!
That's all for now! Wendy - Carnival Secretary
Part-time Traffic Warden
At the February meeting of the Parish Council it was agreed to employ a part-time traffic warden for Delabole from this
month onwards. I welcome this decision, as one of the key issues I have tried to address since coming into office is that
of the safe access in and out of Pengelly for our Community Fire Engine. Last year there had been a spate of incidents
when illegally parked cars had impeded the access which could have had life threatening consequences. There is no
easy answer to the parking problems in the village, but the yellow lines which are in place are all there for good safety
reasons. My hope is that by enforcing parking regulations people will be more inclined to park safely and legally, and
will reduce the inconvenience and danger placed upon other road users and pedestrians every day. Double yellow lines
along the edge of the road mean no waiting at any time. However, you may stop while passengers get into or out of the
vehicle and to load and unload goods - ie anything that is of sufficient bulk, weight and or value that cannot be
reasonably conveyed other than by vehicle. If a delivery is being carried out to a trade or business premises by a
commercial vehicle this will be seen as compliant with the above. It will also be recognised that application of this
definition will be dependent on the individual. For example an elderly person is unlikely to be able to carry the same
items that a younger, healthier person might. Loading/Unloading involving the vehicle needs to be observed by the
Traffic Warden whilst the vehicle is parked. The observation period shall be for at least five minutes for a private vehicle
and 10 minutes for a commercial vehicle, and a PCN (ticket) shall only be issued if no activity is seen during this period.
Single Yellow Lines along the edge of the road mean you can't wait during the times shown on the adjacent sign.
However, you may stop while passengers get into or out of the vehicle and to load and unload as above. Pedestrian
Crossing Zig-Zags – you must not park on a pedestrian crossing or in the area covered by the zig-zag markings. These
markings are installed specifically to maintain pedestrian safety Yellow zig-zag markings outside schools indicate the
length of road where you should not stop, not even to pick up or set down children or other passengers. These markings
are to ensure that children can see and be seen clearly when crossing the road. If you have any questions about
regulations or appeals process, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
for making a lovely celebratory cake, to Dominic for opening the shop and to all her volunteers.
We were joined by Jackie and David from Nankersey MV
Sunday’s preacher reminded us about giving things up
Alison’s putting an item of clothing she no longer needs
someone who could horde for Englan Cornwall, I could
certainly learn a lesson from that!
Delabole School
This Term has been extremely busy at Delabole School with our children taking part in so many memorable experiences.
The most memorable milestone for our children was the residential visit to London. What a fantastic experience it was
and the children were superb ambassadors for the school. Meanwhile, the Year 5 and 6 pupils who remained in school
were lucky enough to experience a drama workshop with the Royal Shakespeare Company at Treviglas School in
Newquay. They were then mesmerized by a performance of ‘The Tempest’. It is my absolute pleasure to inform our
community that since that experience, our school has become an affiliated school to The Royal Shakespeare Company
as a result of our pupils’ commitment and skills on the day. This means that two members of staff will have the
opportunity to train with the RSC to deliver the highest quality drama and English skills.
Other news includes the extraordinary Garden Project being run by our KS1 pupils in collaboration with some very
talented members of our local community. As always, the enthusiasm, energy and sheer determination of our local
families and trades will help the children to realise their beautiful ideas for a wildlife and sensory garden in the school
grounds.
Many of our friends and neighbours will have noticed that a new perimeter fence has gone up over the past few weeks
and the front of the school continues to look even smarter. This also means a huge improvement in levels of safety which
is paramount on our busy road. We hope that you agree that the school is beginning to look like a community building
we can all be proud of.
Finally, the school had a very significant monitoring visit from a school improvement officer linked to the Regional
Schools Commission at the start of March. He has validated the judgements of the leadership team and acknowledged
that standards at the school have risen dramatically over the past months. Truly, the Delabole School community can
be proud of its achievements.
(children’s playtime, in Cornish)
At last it’s April! It’s nearly the Easter holiday and hopefully the start of
much nicer weather so that we can go outside exploring and investigating.
This is the time of year when new life is starting everywhere. One of the
things that we might then notice is lots of different kinds of eggs. Not only
birds lay eggs of course – what else can you think of that lay eggs?
What lays
these?
Or these?
These eggs are
from a creature
with a shell.
This
creature
can fly
Can you work out what laid which egg?
Some eggs are very small, you may need a magnifying glass to see them
properly. Most insect and amphibians don’t make homes for their eggs, or
look after them, but birds do. They make nests out of wool, twigs, mud,
moss and lots of other things, to keep their eggs safe. If you find a nest
hidden in your garden or a hedge, please don’t touch it, or the eggs inside
– if you do the mother bird may leave them and the eggs will die. Just
watch from a distance and you may see the chicks hatch, feed, grow and
fly away. As it’s nearly Easter, enjoy your Easter eggs and leave the wild
birds to look after their eggs! J

An Easter Tale: the Women’s View
It was still dark when we got up - not that any of us had slept much, it was a restless night going over and over what
had happened - it had all been so quick and so unexpected, so beyond our control. Was there something we could
have done, to keep him away from the city; to protect him from the authorities; to persuade him of a different way of
doing things? But we never thought it would come to this - nailed up there, right in front of us!
We had travelled with him, cared for him and listened when we could and now this one final task of preparing his body
for burial was all that remained to be done and so we gathered the spices, the cloths and the water jars and set out for
the place we had seen him laid, before the Sabbath had begun and confined us to our lodgings. We pulled our shawls
over our heads, afraid to be seen, afraid of the authorities who had done this to him - would we, be next? Afraid of
trespassing, we didn’t know this wealthy man who had carried the body of our Rabbi to this place: we didn’t have his
permission to be there. Were we afraid of our task? No, we were used to death, had seen it before, but this was a
fearful death and we were not at home in safe and familiar surroundings, but in this strange garden in the misty half-light
of early dawn - we were jumpy, who could deny it, but once we were there with the dear body of our Lord, then we would
be fine, in a way it was a comfort, one last thing we could do for him.
We were worried about the stone - two of us had seen it rolled to seal the entrance and it was huge - would we be able
to move it? And if not, what then?
And so we arrived at the place, but something wasn’t quite right. In the growing light we could see that the great stone
was pushed to one side and the entrance of the tomb was open. With relief we rushed to the doorway, but relief quickly
turned to apprehension as, with a movement in the gloom of the interior, it dawned on us that someone was here before
us!
My heart was pounding as my eyes adjusted and in the light from the doorway. I could see a young man in white, I
scanned the room - where was Jesus’ body? We were all panicking now, hands clutching at one another, struggling to
comprehend - he spoke and we did hear, but barely understood, his words seemed so …so unbelievable,
incomprehensible, Risen? Tell the others he is risen?
To be honest, we lost it - can you blame us? We turned and ran out of the tomb through the dew-soaked garden, down
the narrow streets of the city. We ran for our lives and didn’t stop to speak to a soul until we were safe home again in
our lodgings, door slammed behind us. Time to catch our breath, to look around, to think. What did he say? Risen?
Did you hear him say risen? Risen! This changes everything!
154th Chapel Anniversary
We did have a fantastic day for our birthday - well, when I say ‘day’, it actually included most of the week-end and
involved hours of work. Marie was there at 9am on Saturday arranging flowers, moving chairs and preparing (!). We
did stop mid-morning for coffee and biscuits, although Mary ate one of the carrots she was peeling instead and Marie
said her dentist had said she wasn’t allowed to munch on one. Marion was up at 5am on Sunday cooking, Marg
seemed to be constantly in the thick of things, whilst Barbara remained serenely calm (ish). The rest of us mucked in
and did what we were asked to do. So THANK YOU (1st) to everyone who helped in any way.
During the day, we were reminded that 154 years ago Queen Victoria was on the throne, life was very different and yet
our forefathers by some miraculous means managed to make sacrifices to find the funds and determination to form
Christian congregations and places of worship in our village. It’s good for us to stop and consider all those hundreds
of villagers who have gone before us and maintained the faith. THANK YOU (2nd) to all those we recall and all those
we never knew.
Morning Worship on Sunday was led by Mrs. Sue Ede, who did a totally excellent job. THANK YOU (3rd), Sue - you
make it look so effortless and I know the PowerPoint was being a pig to start with. Where she gets her ideas from is a
wonder. The talk was split into three short sections and included needing me to lie across a chair whilst Nicky taught
me to swim and Viv had to wheel an imaginary wheelbarrow across an imaginary tightrope. I was so engrossed with
her acting that I dropped my ‘playing’ glasses through the organ pedal-board and had to scramble around on the floor
in order to fish them out (covered in fluff). Viv was being interviewed by Barbara and was trying to convince her to sit
in the wheel barrow and be pushed across the tightrope. You needed to be there to appreciate it. The message was
remembrance of and gratitude for the past and trust and faith in God for the future. We ended with the hymn ‘Your
hand, O God, has guided your flock from age to age’.
Next came our celebration dinner. It was great to see everybody enjoying
themselves and chatting to their neighbours. THANK YOU (4th) to all those
who came and supported the occasion. Also THANK YOU (5th) to all those
who organised lunch - you were truly marvellous.
By the time everyone had picked up the debris, there was an hour to spare at
home before it was ‘turn around’ and get supper ready for after the concert.
The feet were beginning to feel the strain by then but we did have
reinforcements when Daphne, Hilary and Wendy turned up trumps. THANK
YOU (6th). It would be good to have a second team to take over in the
evening - perhaps next year some of you might like to volunteer?
The 6 o’clock Songs of Praise was well attended and led again by Sue who’d
researched various hymns that might be chosen and where they ranked in
the popularity stakes. Maria and Stuart did manful (am I allowed to use that
word?) work at the organ and piano - THANK YOU (7th) both - and the
congregation didn’t do a bad job either!! THANK YOU (8th).
This was followed at 7.30pm with a concert by Nankersey Male Choir and Roger Nicholls and Stuart. If you weren’t
there you missed a treat. It was the nicest concert I’ve been to for some while - relaxed and definitely entertaining. The
Choir’s repertoire was engaging, the accompanist, Michael Uren, knew what he was about and the Musical Director,
Elaine Tangye (who also conducts the Trelawney Choir) had things well in hand and had already worked with many
of the men from other choirs who all joined together for the final rousing Morte Christe. THANK YOU (9th) all.
What can I say about Roger and Stuart? They brought flair, talent and total enjoyment to the proceedings - plus having
us in stitches. Roger even included a monologue by Delabole’s talented comedian, the late Boxer Rowe, who travelled
far and wide with The Optimists Concert Party. There were shouts of ‘More!’ when they finished and we were treated
to an encore which Stuart had never played before but he improvised along and Roger had us all joining in with gusto.
Really, really THANK YOU(10th) both.
Then we have Eva Paynter, who chaired the concert and what an excellent job she did - putting everyone at ease and
delivering memorable stories including the one about … no I’d better not tell you, in case she wants to use it again. It
also turned out that she’d visited many parts of the globe with Elaine whilst they were travelling with the Cornwall Choir.
THANK YOU (11th) Eva.
The concert was very well attended - which you’re never sure about nowadays - but people came from far and wide.
including some members of the Stowford Meadow Singers. So, THANK YOU (12th) to all who made the effort to be
there. I’m confident that you enjoyed it.
Tricia gave the vote of thanks - THANK YOU (13th) - and we all applauded loudly in response.
Some of the helpers
After the supper was served, Diana (our Treasurer, who was very pleased with the financial outcome and says THANK
YOU (14th) to everyone for their generosity - but we do need to order more heating oil), Eva and a few old friends,
congregated around the table and were able to reminisce about their childhood at Dizzard. It really was a happy
occasion!
We arrived home at 11pm (ish). It had been a long couple of days - but as Granny used to say, ‘It’s better to wear out
than rust out!’
Tintagel Orpheus Male Voice Choir
The choir held its first concert of the year, together with The Minstrel Choir, to an enthusiastic audience in St Genny’s
Church on Saturday, 4 th March.
The following day, to celebrate St Piran’s Day, some members of the choir performed at the Tintagel Arms Hotel. An
afternoon of hearty, sing-a-long Corrnish songs was enjoyed by customers and choir members.
Saturday, April 29 th from 12.25pm onwards, sees us competing at The Hall For Cornwall in Truro in the International
Male Voice Choir Festival. We are placed in the category for choirs with fewer than 40 members.
As part of this festival, Tintagel is ‘hosting’ a concert on Sunday, 30 th April, starting at 7.30pm in Bude Central Methodist
Church. Three other choirs will take part with us, Wadebridge Male Voice Choir, Hampshire Police Male Voice Choir
and Melbourne (Australia) Welsh Male Voice Choir. 139 choristers promise a ‘night to remember’. There are still some
tickets available.
Looking ahead, on Sunday, 7 th May at 7.30pm we are at St Kew Church for their Flower Festival.
This year, instead of our ever popular Cabaret evening, we are putting on a ‘Variety Concert’ at Otterham Village Hall.
Loosely themed around the ‘swinging 60s’, entertainment will be provided by choir members with solo performances,
duets, groups and the full choir. Refreshments will be a pasty supper followed by various gateaux. Please bring your
own wine and glasses.
Booking essential as numbers are limited. Tickets at £10 can be ordered through our Hon. Secretary, John Sadler on
01840 212583.
Any other enquiries to the Chairman, Bob Metters on 01840 212736.
At the time of submitting this article, the choir is due to compete in the Wadebridge Music Festival on Friday, 10 th March
from 7.45pm onwards.
STOP PRESS. Tintagel choir performed well at the Wadebridge Music Festival and carried off the cup,
beating Wadebridge in the Male Voice Choir section.
Roscarrock Revival.
We will again be presenting two performances of their ‘Tenebrae’ concerts, which tells the story of Easter in music and
narration.
On Palm Sunday, 9 th April, at The Bodmin Christian Centre at 7pm and on
Good Friday, 14 th April in St Teath Church, again at 7pm.
‘Tenebrae’ was very moving and well received last year. This year we have introduced some small changes to the
music which we are sure will further enhance the listening experience. Looking forward to seeing you there.
Daffodils
No, it’s alright, I’m not going to
burst forth into poetry - but
aren’t the daffodils growing in
the village verges fabulous?
It’s slipped my memory exactly
how they got there, who was
responsible for the hard work
and how it was funded - but if
you know the low down…
why not drop a line to ‘The Slate’?
Then we can know who to thank.
SLATE DONATIONS
Many thanks to the generous folk who have left
some money in the box at the Post Office. Any
contribution towards the production costs of The
Delabole Slate is very gratefully received and
your support is much appreciated.
Thank you.
Memories of Delabole - Part One
Our next instalment of memories of Delabole comes from the late Mr. Jack Stephens.
A few weeks ago, I received a parcel from David and Edwina (they’re settling into their new home) who’d been
unpacking some boxes and found Mr. Stephens’ collection of reminiscences and thought ‘The Slate’ would find them
interesting.
Many of you may remember Mr. Stephens as a teacher here at Delabole and a former Head of Camelford Primary
School but his youth was spent growing up in the village. In fact, my mum and dad, Hazel (Hill) and Cyril Hicks, were
in the same class at Delabole Primary as Jack Stephens and his future wife, Nancy Popplestone, the daughter of the
then Head of the school.
I haven’t been able to ask permission to use these extracts from his recollections, which we hope to include in the next
few issues, but if you’re a relative of the Stephens’ family I hope that you’re happy to share these memories that bring
the village’s past to life. Helen
My father was William Alan Stephens, the son of John Stephens, a butcher who owned his own business in the village
of Delabole. My mother, who came from Torpoint, was called Kathleen, the daughter of John Bull, a naval officer.
They met when mother moved to Delabole as a teacher in charge of the Girl’s Department at Delabole County School.
My father had served in the Artillery throughout the First World War and he was an accomplished horseman, having
dealt largely with horses which were used to pull the heavy guns. As a result of the constant firing he became profoundly
deaf later in life.
They married in December 1919.
I was born in 1921 at Claremont, High Street, Delabole. I don’t think we lived there for long as the only memories of my
very young days was of life in a cottage. This would have been 3 Tor View Terrace, High Street, which was the largest
of a row of four cottages owned by my Grandfather and situated at the rear of his house, Tor View.
In the first cottage lived Mr. and Mrs. D. Haynes and their son, Kenneth, who became my best friend. Mr. Haynes was
the village cobbler and his shop was a tin hut on the opposite side of the road on a bank just outside the Fair Field. In
the second cottage lived Mr. Spry, who was a quarry worker, with his wife and daughter, Gladys.
Gladys’ claim to fame was that she never travelled outside the village until when in her fifties, she had to visit Plymouth
for treatment to her eyes. On returning, her comment was that Plymouth was a terrible place and that she wouldn’t go
there again – and she didn’t.

If you have ever thought about giving Martial Arts a go but
never had the chance, Camelford Karate, Judo and Aikido
Clubs are offering a first lesson free for any Child or Adult
wanting to give a Martial Art a try. You don’t need to have
done any training before and all ability levels are
welcome. The Clubs are all run ‘not for profit’ which
the training hall and any remaining funds are used for the
benefit of the club.
All are taught by Shihan (Master) Roger Tarrant 6th Dan
black belt in both Shotokan Karate & Aikido, and a 3rd
instructors. Roger has also taught the Police and
American Armed Forces, as well as numerous selfdefence
courses. Shihan Roger established the clubs
clubs in the area and is the highest qualified Multi
Disciplined Instructor in Cornwall for Martial Arts which
teach the traditional pure form of each discipline.
Camelford Shotokan Karate club is held at Sir James
Smith’s School on a Tuesday at 6pm for Juniors and 7pm
for Adults.
The Aikido club and Judo club are held at Camelford
Leisur Centre on a Monday and Wednesday respectively,
both beginning at 7pm.
The evenings are a fun way to get fit and build confidence
whilst learning effective self-defence. The Club is looking
to build on current numbers and are looking forward to
some new beginners, so why not give it a go! Just turn up
on the evening of your choice and join in for a free ‘taster
