Biography: During a career that spans over 3 decades Mark has built a deep awareness and understanding
of retail from almost every angle, whilst remaining true to his design roots. Having left university with a degree
in furniture design, his fi rst job was at Conrans where legendary designer and businessman Terrence Conran
mentored him. Here Mark learnt the art of 3 dimensional designs, creating visual representations of new
products and modelling prototypes which, he has used in the retail and leisure industries. Manufacturing would
form the next phase of his education. He would spend the next two years at a point of sale house honing his
skills in the development of eye catching design, merchandising and building an invaluable understanding of
how things are made. These skills remain as relevant today as they were then. Mark founded Umbrella in the
late 80s. Just over 2 decades later the company is one of the leading retail design consultancies in the country.
Now over 26 years in Business, Umbrella continues to grow from strength to strength. Client’s include major
beauty brands, high street retailers and department stores. Mark is widely known to be able to interoperate
client’s briefs. Often using a pencil and paper, Mark can bridge the gap between what the clients thinks he

wants to actually visualising it for them, quite often on a napkin, or occasionally a tablecloth!

doctorate from UAL, and based in Asia for 15 years, Valerie consulted and lectured on Visual Merchandising
(VM) and Marketing for clients and universities.
As Trend Director, APAC, for Stylesight, the US on-line fashion trend and analysis provider, Valerie has spoken
and published widely on global fashion trend and VM. The creative Director for VM supplier, Blue Mount,
and Editorial Consultant Valerie published +300 articles on VM, curating VM Conferences and VM student
competitions. Currently an Associate Lecturer at LCF, Valerie works with EMBA and VM & Branding graduates.
