Time’s UP! Sticking to Your 30 Seconds
By Laura Templeton, CEO, 30 Second Success
“30 Seconds that’s all
I get? But I have so
much to say, I’ll never
get it all in in just 30
seconds! Maybe if I
talk faster I can get it
all in. Maybe I’ll just
keep going, we’re all
friends here no one
will care. I have two
businesses, maybe
they’ll give me 30
seconds for each
one.” Do these
thoughts sound
familiar to you? Some
people really struggle
with fitting everything
they want to say into
a 30 second
commercial. Here are two reasons why it is so important to stick with the time and why you don’t
necessarily need to say everything you think you need to.
What you say in your 30 seconds needs to compel people to want to know more about who you are and
what you do. You need to say just enough to peak their interest. All too often people think they need to
provide a list of all of their services in their allotted time when in truth you really want to say just enough
to intrigue your audience and include a call to action that will encourage them to set an appointment to
find out more. That appointment is when you give them all of the wonderful details about who you are,
what you do, and how you can
help them.
Sticking with the 30 second format
is really important to the group as
well. Think about it, if everyone in
the room were allowed to go as
long as they wanted to the meeting
would be over before the second
person got an opportunity to talk. It
is imperative to stick with the 30
seconds for one major reason,
RESPECT. When you stick with
the allowed time you are
respecting everyone in that room.
When people go over their time
they lose the attention and respect
of their audience because they are
conveying the message that what
they have to say is more important
than the next person or anyone
else for that matter.
If you love to talk, I get it, but save
it for your one on one meetings
when you’ve got their full attention.
Your 30 second commercial should
be just enough to tell them who
you are, what you do, how you
solve a problem that they might
have, and that they need to
schedule an appointment with you.
Keep it short, keep it simple, keep it
within the 30 seconds and gain the
respect and the clients. ☐
The Sandwich Generation Is Growing
and So Are Their Responsibilities
Provided By Fran Mordell
4
Across the U.S., millions of
middle-aged adults struggle with
the dual responsibility of
financially supporting a child and
caring for an aging parent. In fact,
a 2013 Pew Research report
found that 33% of baby boomers
and 42% of GenXers are now
members of what is commonly
called “the sandwich generation.”
The meteoric rise of the sandwich
generation is a byproduct of two
powerful trends: (1) women giving
birth later in life, and (2) the
increasing longevity of the U.S.
population. When you combine
these factors with a growing
number of young adults moving in
with their parents, it’s easy to see
why so many middle-aged
Americans are concerned about
the future. If you are one of them,
here are a few steps you can take
to protect your loved ones and
prepare for the financial
responsibilities ahead.
Have a plan for eldercare.
Talk to your parents about the
kind of care they’d prefer, and
discuss it with your siblings. See
which, if any, family members
have the capacity to help provide
care and which home would be
the most accessible. If you think
external help will be needed,
research local resources to see
what is available—and at what
cost. Most importantly, consult an
attorney and make sure you have all
the legal documents needed to make
sudden medical and financial decisions
if the need arises.
Evaluate your resources.
Before determining a course of action,
make sure you know what resources
are available. Can your parents pay for
care on their own? Do they have longterm
care insurance? Do they own any
whole life insurance policies with living
benefits they may be able to use to
pay for care? Can other family
members contribute financially, or is
public assistance a viable option?
Protect your children’s lifestyle and
future.
While caring for a parent is a huge
responsibility, it’s important to make
sure your children’s needs are also
met. If you haven’t done so already,
set up a college fund and make
funding it a priority. Also, consider
purchasing a term life insurance policy
that can help to cover day-to-day
expenses and protect their comfortable
lifestyle in case anything tragic
happens to you.
Caring for children and aging relatives
at the same time is never easy, but
with the right planning and resources,
it is possible to do both. With so many
people joining the ranks of the
sandwich generation, now’s the time to
start planning for the future.
Hope & Renewal
By Deb Zobel
I’m not a Medical Doctor,
Nutritionist nor certified Health
Coach. I’m simply a single 54 yr.
old woman trying to make it in this
world. I do, however, consider
myself an expert on hope &
renewal. You see, I was recently
diagnosed with Rheumatoid
Arthritis (RA). Unlike most people, I
was actually relieved to have
gotten a definitive diagnosis – now
I could take action and do
something about it! I had hope and
was determined to renew my
health!
I initially went on medication to help
me short term. But, I didn’t like the
adverse side-effects so I knew a
major lifestyle shift was in order.
Over the years, I had researched
the effects of the foods we eat and
the effects they have on our
bodies. The way we eat today has
caused our body pH to drop to the
acidic side, where disease can not
only develop, but flourish. Our
bodies function healthfully and
optimally at a slightly alkaline, or
basic, pH. So, I knew for sure I
had to give up sugar, processed
foods, even wheat & gluten, and
increase my intake of whole foods,
including vegetables and fruits. I
immediately began drinking 8 oz. of
lemon water using ½ a lemon first
thing in the morning to start the
detox process. I continue drinking
water throughout the day to
continue flushing the toxins from my
body. After the lemon water, I make
a green smoothie using just enough
fruit to give it flavor, yet not too
many calories. I love to experiment
with my own recipes, but my key
ingredients in all of my smoothies
are 2 handfuls of a variety of
greens, 1 stalk of celery including
the leaves, ½ large cucumber, a
handful of baby carrots, 1/2 an
apple & almond milk. I use a variety
of fruits and make a different
concoction every day. I make a
whole pitcher full so I get 3-4
smoothies out of each smoothie,
enough to last me 2 days. I had also
seen a study about going totally
grain-free, so the next step was to
eliminate all grains, not just wheat
and gluten. I added a supplement
that is purely fruits and vegetable
(Juice Plus+) and I felt a major
difference in less than a week. The
pain was gone in 4 days & the
fatigue was diminished by day 6. I
have been off my meds for 2
months now and I feel great! I have
no pain and have amazing energy. I
am quite confident that I have put
the disease into remission by these
simple dietary changes, among
other positive changes. Each
morning when I awake, I listen to
the late Dr. Wayne Dyer and the
first words out of my mouth are
“Thank You, thank You, thank you!”
because I am so grateful for the
Divine Guidance and knowledge to
have been able to renew
my life and my health. You
can too! ☐
Caring Mom Helps Nurture Children with Autism
By Debra Forman
Several years ago, Linda
Kuepper sat at her kitchen table
with her husband, Frank, and
worried about their son, Michael,
after he was diagnosed with
autism.
They were filled with questions:
What would his future look like?
Would he have friends and an
active social life like his older
brother? Or would his life
primarily be filled with various
therapists and caregivers who
constantly paraded through their
Richboro home?
Linda Kuepper vowed to help
him and his peers have a rich
and active social life, despite
any obstacles they may have
faced in their speech, social
skills, or overall development.
There was no game plan or blue
print for helping a child with
autism. So, the loving mom of
two sons, wrote her own. She
started a non-profit, grass-roots
charity, The Autism Cares
Foundation, to help children,
teens, and young adults with
autism and their families.
This is an important endeavor
because of these sobering
statistics: Today, there are 1 in
68 children who are currently
diagnosed with autism; and 1 out
of 42 boys. But for the local
families life is much brighter.
What Linda started for Michael,
now a 17-year-old senior in high
school, has literally changed the
lives of hundreds of children, teens,
and young adults with autism,
by providing up to 150 free annual
events and life
enrichment programs; more than
700 such activities so far.
Each week participants, their
siblings, parents, and grandparents,
enjoy various events, including
sensory-friendly movies, FitLife
classes, Glee Club, Fun
Club, monthly bounce
parties, swimming, Phillies games
and other sporting events, teen
proms, holiday parties and more.
These young people now have the
opportunity to socialize and
connect, while their family members
help and support one another. They
have all taught the greater
community about the vital values of
kindness, patience, acceptance
and love.
"When you see the smiles on their
faces, it tells the whole story,"
says Kuepper, whose son,
Michael, attends many of the
events and programs. “We are
helping these families improve
and enrich their lives every day
and build on a future that will truly
make a difference.”
The long-term goal of the
Foundation is to develop a Life
Enrichment Community, the focus
of which will be a
comprehensive Autism Resource
Center to help with the long-term
needs of young people with
autism and their families.
This group has been a non-profit
charity in Pennsylvania for several
years, and was recently certified
as such in New Jersey and New
York, with Delaware expected to
follow soon.
"What started with our one child
has become a huge extended
family. We could not be more
proud of the children, their
families, and our volunteers,”
explains Kuepper. “Everyone
involved with the Autism Cares
Foundation puts his or her
heart into helping change the
world – one individual at a time." ☐
Getting Down to Business
By Phyllis Smith
Summer is over and it’s time to get back to business.
Nose to the grind, creative juices flowing, mind focused on
the tasks at hand – that is where you need to be if you
want to successfully finish the year. For some people,
finding the right course of action is overwhelming. If you
continue to operate in the same mode every year, you’re
obviously not refreshing your ideas or actions that may
move you in a positive direction. If you’re not sure of the
right path for your business or even yourself – go to the
library or get on the internet and start researching articles
that might influence your direction. If you need some
energy or motivation, attend networking events or
Mastermind sessions where you can connect with other
individuals that feed off of each other’s ideas and
expertise. You do not need to accomplish everything
alone. With that in mind – why not find partners that can
assist you in areas that are beneficial to achieving
success. If you don’t have a strategic business plan or
marketing plan, even something in writing, how can you
possibly have any direction or
even find the right partners? Many
people ask me how I manage so
many businesses or create a
number of events for the
Professional Women’s Business
Network. It’s not a secret because
I have developed a network of
individuals that support the many
facets of the businesses that I
manage. Each individual is an
expert in their industry, thereby
affording me the opportunity to
rely on them to provide the
services that my businesses
require as they are needed. This
isn’t brain surgery – it’s just a
strategic plan to be more
productive. Productivity is the key
to all business success. If you are
not working efficiently and costeffectively,
then you will not have
the time or energy to be
productive or successful.
Finding time to do the many
things necessary to manage a
business or career, and also
have a personal life can also be
overwhelming. But again, finding
partners to assist in all areas of
your business and personal life
can provide you with the time
necessary to focus on the areas
that you personally can control.
No one ever said that having a
career or business and
managing a household was
easy. However, if you carefully
plan and manage your business
PWBN Horsham Chapter

and life, and not have the
business or life manage your
time – then you will not only
have more time and personal
satisfaction, but you will also
have more success in whatever
you plan to achieve.
Working smart and not hard is
an achievement in itself. If you
put a plan together to
accomplish everything you
need to do without putting a
strain on your energy and time
– you will not only find the time
to be productive, but you will
also enjoy your life. ☐
