This year’s President’s Awards, chosen<br />

by the ITA President Joseph Alessi, go<br />

to Professor Dee Stewart of Indiana<br />

University and to the pioneering charity,<br />

Brass for Africa.<br />

ITA AWARDS<br />

The International Trombone Association<br />

Awards committee is pleased to<br />

announce the winners of the 2017 ITA<br />

Awards. The awards are voted upon<br />

by past presidents and the current ITA<br />

advisory committee.<br />

The winner of this year’s Neill Humfeld<br />

Award was Ben van Dijk from the<br />

Netherlands. The Neill Humfeld Award<br />

is given for Excellence in Trombone<br />

Teaching and, whilst recognizing the<br />

contributions to trombone teaching of<br />

the late Neill Humfeld, it honours living<br />

teachers who have achieved the highest<br />

level of excellence in their work.<br />

This year’s ITA Award goes to jazz<br />

trombonist Wycliffe Gordon. The ITA<br />

Award recognizes the highest level of<br />

creative and artistic output in areas such<br />

as performance, composition, arranging,<br />

teaching, conducting, research and<br />

service.<br />

The Lifetime Achievement Award will<br />

be presented to John Kenny.<br />

The Lifetime Achievement Award<br />

recognizes people who have distinguished<br />

themselves by their contributions to the<br />

trombone profession over a long career.<br />

RNCM TROMBONES<br />

STREAM TO THE<br />

WORLD<br />

15th December 2016 saw the<br />

Trombone Department of the Royal<br />

Northern College of Music take to<br />

the Conservatoire’s concourse for<br />

their annual ‘Christmas Carols on the<br />

Concourse’, bringing some considerable<br />

festive cheer to Manchester. Conducted<br />

by the Halle’s Principal Trombone, Katy<br />

Jones, and joined by Visiting Professor<br />

of Trombone and Mnozil Brass<br />

superstar, Zoltan Kiss, the performance<br />

was broadcast online and has been seen<br />

currently by over 36,000 people.<br />

LPO CHRISTMAS<br />

CAROLS<br />

On the 1st December 2016, the London<br />

Philhamonic Brass section and friends<br />

(together with the London Philharmonic<br />

Chorus) took over the concourse at<br />

Waterloo Station to raise money for<br />

Save the Children<br />

With festive favourites drowning out<br />

the station PA system for 2 hours they<br />

raised a whopping £3,101.26.<br />

They would like to thank Bell<br />

Percussion for their invaluable support;<br />

without which, the tuba players would be<br />

standing and there would be no jingle bells.<br />

ZOLTAN<br />

MASTERCLASS<br />

December saw Zoltan Kiss give a<br />

masterclass to the RNCM Trombone<br />

Department. As part of his role as<br />

Visiting Professor of Trombone,<br />

members from the Trombone<br />

Department performed a variety of solo<br />

and ensemble works under his watchful<br />

eye. Also featured were students from<br />

Chetham’s School of Music.<br />
