SAFETY BEHAVIOR
Behavior is the way human beings and other
organisms act. Human behavior is determined
partly by heredity (determined by your genes) and
partly by environment (conditions and forces that
surround and influence). In addition, behavior can
be modified through learning.
A good safety culture
is when people work
safely even when no
one is looking.
What influences our behavior at work?
Organizational Values
Safety Culture – “how we do things around here”
Management Commitment
Mutual Trust
Communication
Supervision
Real World Workable Procedures
Risk Perception
Safe behavior is often seen as something frontline workers
have but it is heavily influenced by wider organizational and
managerial behavior.
Behavior can be influenced by
PERSONALITY
(characteristic behavior
and thought)
ATTITUDE
(Predetermined set
of responses)
APTITUDE
(measure of how
appropriate actions are)
MOTIVATION
(having the encouragement
to do something)
For every accident there are many more near
misses and unsafe acts.
Good systems are not enough to prevent accidents
Real safety is determined by how everyone
behaves. Staff, contractors, visitors, tenants.
Safe behavior is what turns systems and
procedures into reality
Up to 80% of
accidents
are attributed
to human error.
There are 4 critical areas of behavior which apply to everyone in our company.
Certain roles have specific behaviors and it takes a group effort to achieve the
overall aim to reduce accidents:
QUESTIONS FOR OPERATIVES
1. What/who are the main influences
for your safety behavior at work?
2. Have you ever done something
unsafe despite knowing the risks?
What made you take the risk?
3. What positive safety behaviors do
you have?
4. Give some examples of negative
safety behavior.
No-one wants to have an accident but unfortunately they do occur, usually as part of a failure in the system, human behavior
or negligence. The HSE work hard to identify hazards and risks and ensure that you have all the information, equipment and
training necessary to minimize the chance of you or others having an accident. However, despite this we had 6 lost time
accidents in both 2015 and 2016. We collate a lot of data throughout the year and create many comparison graphs. One of
these is the Cummulative Severity Rate. This CSR is calculated using the total amount of man days lost due to accidents for
the year and the total amount of man hours worked during the year. As can be seen from the graph the accidents in 2015 were
of a more serious nature and resulted in longer time off work for the injured parties. In 2016 the accidents that occurred were
significantly less severe which shows that although we had the same amount of accidents they were of a more minor nature.
During 2017 we will continue to promote the need to reduce the amount of accidents that occur, look for how you can be hurt
but ultimately it is up to every member of staff to ensure that you work safely, sensibly and give consideration to how you, or
others could be hurt.
