Annual Report 2016

A Letter from Our Founders
In 2008, we and our two youngest children, Laura and Harrison, followed what we
believed to be God’s call to help reach the people of Western Honduras by initiating
a conventional model of missionary-led church planting. We quickly discovered that
systemic poverty, coupled with nominal Christianity, where people would know
about Jesus, but not own Him as Lord, fed a culture of widespread corruption,
ignorance, and oppression.
This environment led us to a new vision for Mission UpReach. We saw the need
to transform the culture of Western Honduras with the gospel of Jesus Christ by
developing and equipping local, Christian leaders. These leaders would develop selfled,
self-sustaining, and self-replicating congregations in and around the region of
Santa Rosa de Copán. We believe these congregations will continue to grow and
multiply and create new, life-changing ministries as each congregation meets the
physical, mental, and spiritual needs within their communities and develop future
leaders of new congregations.

The process of identifying and developing leaders often begins by providing
fundamental human needs. We do this through our support programs, which
include the DESEO public school values education program, an agricultural training
center for young men called The Moses Project, and much more. Volunteers
help us show Christ’s love through many different kinds of brigades: evangelism,
medical clinics, construction, and, beginning this year, water well drilling. These
support programs open the doors in communities for our core goal of training and
supporting the launch of self-sustaining congregations.
We call this collaboration between our core and support programs The John 1010
Generation. This method helps develop local leaders who will be equipped to launch
1010 congregations in Western Honduras in this generation. We have seen great
progress toward this key performance indicator in 2016. We now have a presence
in over 50 communities and our largest congregation, in Barrio Belén, has more
than 250 people worshipping with us each Sunday. There are 23 newly planted or
expanded congregations we can count as a result of these efforts so far. All of them
are well on their way to being John 1010 congregations that know Jesus, and “have
life and have it to the full,” John 10:10.
Many of you are aware that the last two years have been challenging for our family.
Our personal struggle has been intense and at times a bit overwhelming. In spite
of these personal struggles, Mission UpReach has thrived, with new growth and
increased effectiveness in our mission. This type of growth during a time of intense
personal trial is a clear indication of two things: God is clearly acting through Mission
UpReach and we are blessed with an incredible team of coworkers.
Things did not slow down or diminish one bit thanks to our employees and
volunteers who kept everything running smoothly. 2016 was a banner year, and we
hope that you enjoy reviewing our progress in this annual report. As great as this
year was, we continue to need your help as we build bridges into more and more of
the communities in our region. We thank you for your past support in so many ways,
and we look forward to serving with you in the future.
The John 1010 Generation - Teaching and Discipleship
We believe developing local Christian leaders will transform the culture of Western
Honduras by the gospel of Jesus Christ. We achieve this transformation by training
and equipping self-led, self-sustaining, and self-replicating congregations.
These congregations and their leaders do not rely on outside funding or leadership
to continue to function and grow. Through congregations like these, individuals
begin to experience true, holistic life change: physical, mental, and spiritual.
It is our goal to equip 1010 leadership teams to launch and support local
congregations within this generation.
towards launching these 1010 teams,
thanks to generous donors like you.

The John 1010 Generation - Women’s and Children’s Programs
A child in Honduras will see
an average of 4 men come
through the home.
A child in Honduras will see an average of 4 men come through the home
in a relationship with their mother by the time they are 18 years old; one in
four young women are sexually abused at some point in their life; one in four
households are headed by single mothers; and one in three children born to
mothers under age 18.
This environment has resulted in a crumbling of family structure and Christian
values. But there is hope. Our programs such as DESEO, Dulce Refugio, and
The Moses Project focus on alleviating these problems while modeling and
helping to develop the Biblical picture of a family.
me mentally, physically,
and spiritually.”
inspiration to me to become all
things to all men so that Christ
may save through me.”
-Krysten Miller
Brigade Participant
Honduras is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Despite
receiving billions of dollars in international aid, four out of every five people
spend their life in poverty. Drug use is prevalent and HIV is a leading cause of
death. The Honduran government spends less than 20% per capita of what is
spent by the U.S. for health and education.
Through programs like DESEO, medical brigades, water well drilling, and
The Moses Project, we focus on helping to alleviate these problems, while
modeling a Christian infrastructure that helps address these social problems.
