Our People
The Star
Jill Borland
Promoting a healthy lifestyle
Jill Borland is striving
to help people to make
healthy choices, and
this weekend’s The Star
City2Surf with Mike Pero
is the perfect opportunity.
Bridget Rutherford spoke
to her about why you
should take part in the
event on Sunday
Can you tell me a bit about your
role at Sport Canterbury?
So I was the general manager
until late last year and then Sport
Canterbury had the opportunity
to take up the Healthy Families
contract. I saw it as a fantastic opportunity
to exercise my passion
around social change so I took
up the leadership role of Healthy
Families Christchurch initiative.
We work with wider stakeholder
groups across the sector to develop
a strategy to make sure we’ve
got really well skilled people and
enough of them for a growing
sector. In greater Christchurch
we’ve got all these fantastic facilities
being built. The council has
indicated we’re going to have to
grow the number of people with
the right skills for those facilities.
What is the purpose of
Healthy Families?
Healthy Families is a social
change initiative. It’s about connecting
leadership to make it
easier to access healthy choices
in everyday lives. So Healthy
Families is about having conversations
at a community level so
the community becomes aware of
the policies and the opportunities
that come up. We are making
healthy choices more acceptable
for some people. For example,
we have been working with
churches, and one church identified
access to fresh produce was a
problem in their communities so
we’ve been helping with that. We
want to know who’s doing what
and how we can help – whether
that might be a work place which
is wanting to help their staff
become Smokefree or working
with a school around the health
of its staff or providing school
gardens or a water-only policy
implementation.
And how did you get involved
in that?
So I started my work as
professional sports coach and
somebody said to me one day
you’ll have to get a real job and
I thought do I? I decided to become
physical education teacher.
Then I had a career shift working
with College of Education promotions
and front-line services.
Part of that was promoting qualifications
of sport coaching and
physical education, so there was
a theme evolving around education
and development. Then I
was made redundant when the
university merged with the College
of Education and from there
I took the opportunity to run
my own business in marketing
and business consultancy. After
the earthquakes I came back to
Christchurch and worked for
Canterbury Earthquake Recovery
Authority in sport and recreation
recovery. I think it presented a
platform to do the work I’m currently
doing.
