ORGANIZE YOUR TAX RECORDS 

The key to a smooth tax season is 

to keep your tax records organized. 

Use our Tax Prep Checklist to 

help gather all of the documents 

needed for your return. Collect 

any tax documents you receive in 

the mail and store them in a safe 

place with your prior year return 

so everything will be easy to find 

when you’re ready to file. 

MAX OUT YOUR RETIREMENT 

ACCOUNTS 

You have until April 18, 2017 

to contribute up to $5,500 

($6,500 if you’re 50 or older) 

to a traditional or Roth IRA 

for 2016. As long as you aren’t 

covered by a retirement plan at 

work, the full amount of your 

traditional IRA contributions can 

be deducted on your tax return. 

If you are covered by a plan 

at work, your deduction may 

be limited depending on your 

income. Roth IRA contributions 

won’t lower your tax bill but 

the withdrawals will be tax-free 

when you retire. 

ITEMIZE YOUR DEDUCTIONS 

For 2016, the standard deduction 

is $6,300 for singles and $12,600 

for married couples filing a joint 

return. Although it may be easier 

to take the standard deduction, 

you may actually save more 

money by itemizing instead. Not

PROVIDE THE CORRECT

FILE AND PAY ON TIME 

If you need extra time to prepare 

your taxes, you must request an 

extension by April 18th. This will 

give you until October 16th to 

file your return without facing 

a failure-to-file penalty. If you 

don’t file an extension and you 

owe the IRS, you will have to pay 

a failure-to-file penalty as well 

as a failure-to-pay penalty. The 

penalty for filing late is usually 5 

percent of the unpaid taxes per 

month, while the late payment 

penalty is usually 0.5 percent of 

the unpaid taxes per month.

Spring Cleaning 

We simply love the warmth and coziness of wintertime, but there is something else 

that we anticipate at the end of winter even more: the start of spring. Our hearts fill 

with joy and positivity thanks to its rebirth, renewal and re-energizing sentiment. It 

prompts us to make a fresh start within ourselves and in our homes. And we are not 

alone–people all over the world have practiced this same ritual for many centuries. 

SPRING CLEANING RITUALS AROUND THE WORLD 

Spring cleaning is a time-honored ritual for a reason. In China people clean their 

houses, clothes and spirits in anticipation of Chinese New Year or Spring Festival. 

They do this to get rid of bad luck and misfortune that may have accumulated during 

the previous year. Once the house is tidied, it is forbidden to touch the floors with a 

broom, otherwise you risk sweeping out all the good luck that entered the house at 

the turn of the year. 

People in Iran have a similar ritual on the 21st of March each year. They call it Khaneh 

Takani, which means “shaking the house.” And that is exactly what Iranian people do. 

Everything gets a thorough cleaning: from beds and rugs to curtains and clothes and 

everything in between. Fresh scented flowers are brought into the house to renew the 

positive energy so both the new year and spring can arrive. 

In Thailand, people celebrate new spring beginnings with the festival of Songkran, 

where they clean their houses and take extra care to thoroughly cleanse all images 

and statues of Buddha in their possession. This tradition is then done in public during 

a parade, as people pour water mixed with perfume and fragrant herbs on one another 

to symbolize blessings and good luck in the new year. 

SPRING CLEANING AND YOU 

Why do we feel the need to clean our environments with the coming of spring? Part 

of it is the urge to finally open all windows and clear the winter mustiness that has 

settled there. On a psychological level, we are also sweeping out the dark winter mood 

in order to welcome the positivity of spring energy, just like ancient civilizations did. 

In this way, a clean house brings us peace of mind and clarity. But how do we start this 

immense spring cleaning ritual? The answer is quite simple: make a list and divide it 

up into smaller tasks, so you can feel the satisfaction of ticking off each item. What 

follows is an example of a spring cleaning outline: 

1. CLEAN WINDOWS 

Start with one of the most visible issues—when the spring sun starts shining through 

your windows, you can see every bit of dirt on them. Combine water, distilled vinegar 

and liquid dish soap in a spray bottle and spray it against the glass. Use a fibre cloth to 

wipe it on, and a squeegee to remove excess liquid. 

2. DECLUTTER 

Before you do a deep clean, declutter it first. This means 

throwing away anything you haven’t used in the past twelve 

months. Avoid throwing odds and ends into a drawer, 

because they will eventually find their way out and create a 

mess. 

3. CLEAN ROOMS FROM TOP TO BOTTOM 

Spring cleaning is about the things that you overlook during 

your day-to-day cleaning routines. Vacuum the ceiling, clean 

the lamps, and use a damp cloth to clean walls and doors. 

Don’t forget light switches and door handles—these are 

typically covered with grime. 

4. RENEW YOUR BEDROOM 

Organize your closets and prepare for a wardrobe transition. 

Remove all clothing you haven’t been wearing in the last 

twelve months and put them in bags for good will. Take your 

curtains and your winter coats to the dry cleaner. Combat any 

stale winter odors with scented candles or fragrance sticks. 

5. A FRESH LOOK IN THE BATHROOM 

Toilets, sinks and tubs get cleaned regularly, but spring 

cleaning involves a different approach. Discard outdated or 

unused products. Replace old towels with new, luxurious 

ones. Reorganize your shelves for maximum efficiency. 

6. DEEP CLEAN YOUR KITCHEN 

Search your cupboards and pantry and discard any outdated 

products. Replace dish and tea towels as well as the mops 

you’ve been using the entire year. Clean the fridge and defrost 

the freezer. Make sure you check all the food and throw out 

anything that has been lying around for too long. 

7. DON’T FORGET THE OUTSIDE 

Clean your patio furniture and wash pillow covers. Use a 

vinegar spray to dissolve green build up on teak and wooden 

furniture. Throw out any pots or other garden accessories 

that haven’t survived the winter in tact. 

By creating a spring cleaning ritual out of these seven steps, 

you’ll notice that it isn’t nearly as daunting as it sounds. And 

when it’s all said and done, you will be ready to welcome the 

coming year with a clear mind and an uplifted spirit.

IT’S TIME TO REGISTER FOR DISCOVERY COLLEGE SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM 

Registration is under way for Lone Star College-CyFair’s popular Discovery 

College for ages 6-14. Morning sessions begin at 8:30 AM and afternoon 

sessions begin at 1 PM and are held June 12 th -29 th and July 10 th -13 th . 

Discovery College programs are focused on STEM (Science, Technology, 

Engineering and Math), performing arts, physical activity and more, with 

some sessions designed for teens for building self-esteem, setting goals 

and planning for college. Sessions are held at the Barker Cypress campus. 

The cost of the week-long sessions is $97 per class. For registration or

SPORT ESSAY CONTEST 

DD Sports Association, a 501c3 non-profit company, working exclusively 

with N Zone Sports Cypress, is pleased to announce a great new program at 

participating Houston Area Schools. In an effort to teach children the values 

involved in sports and the lessons they teach, we will be hosting an essay 

contest. One student from each school will a 100% scholarship to participate in 

the upcoming N Zone Sports Summer League at Copperfield Church in Cypress 

starting in July. The essay contest will be open to all county students enrolled 

at elementary and middle schools. Students will be asked to write a one to 

two paragraph essay on the importance of Sportsmanship in sports. The goal 

of this contest is to help educate and teach children that the focus of sports 

is much greater than simply winning or losing. Principals from each school 

will be given the authority to determine how the winner is selected. Winning 

essays must be selected by Friday, April 28 th . All children that participate by 

submitting an essay will receive a $20 discount toward an N Zone Sports league 

registration. As a token of our appreciation, the essay administer from each 

school will receive a $25 Gift Card to Texas Roadhouse restaurant. If you have

Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls 

ages 4 to 18 for the SPRING Season. Games start on April 8, 2017. FFPS is 

a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive youth 

sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, FFPS has 

grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater Houston 

area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including one practice 

per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal playing time 

and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive coaching and 

more. No tryouts are required. Registration fees $122

April Gardening Tips 

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many 

pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ 

mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, 

termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future 

pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes 

exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home 

and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. 

Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” 

back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” 

wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to 

the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most 

conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high 

against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. 

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates 

overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest 

onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests 

from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and 

puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. 

Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown 

patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in 

some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) 

fertilization c) weed control. 

Most important is proper watering: 

• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) 

• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. 

• In severe drought, water every 5 th day. 

• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. 

• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and 

more drought resistant roots. 

• Less watering also saves you money!!

area, the B.F. Adam Golf Classic is a prime example of our

dollars. CFEF was established in 1970 as a non-profit to raise 

money to fund a scholarship for high school graduates in

In addition to aircraft, several historic military vehicles will be on display 

as well as a very unique anti-aircraft gun trailer exhibit from the Battleship 

Texas. Our hangar’s WWII museum will also be open and docents will be 

available to help all ages enjoy the museum’s displays. 

West Houston Airport is located at 18000 Groschke Rd., 2 miles north of 

I-10 and between Hwy. 6 and Barker Cypress, will be the place to visit 

on Saturday and Sunday, April 22 nd and 23 rd from 10 AM to 5 PM. The 

admission fee is $10 per car, which goes to supporting the organizations 

efforts to keep these aircraft flying. The airport gates will be open from 

10 AM to 5 PM. Food, drinks and souvenirs and vintage aircraft rides will

NATURE PROGRAMS FOR 

PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN 

SATURDAYS IN NATURE 

This program is held on the second Saturday of each month at the Edith 

L. Moore Nature Sanctuary. Arrive anytime between 9 and 11:30 AM. The 

program ends at 12 noon. A guided nature walk will begin at 10 AM. No 

reservations required. Donations are encouraged. This is a “whole family” 

program; parents or other adult guardians should participate with their 

children. Upcoming programs include April program on Bird Watching 

(Build a Bird Feeder). 

THE TITMOUSE CLUB 

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored 

by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is offered every 

Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from mid-September 

until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester 

Boulevard. Each week features a different nature theme and may include 

nature talks, stories, hands-on activities and walks in the woods. For more

Melt Chicken butter broth and saute onions, peppers & celery until tender. Add crawfish, 

1/4 cup simmer chopped 10 min. jalapenos stirring (optional) occasionally. Add garlic, parsley, flour and 

cream - mix well. Simmer on low heat 30 min. stirring occasionally. Add 

cheese Melt butter & stir and until saute melted. onions, peppers & celery until tender. Add crawfish, 

simmer 10 min. stirring occasionally. Add garlic, parsley, flour and

You could make this on National Zucchini Bread Day April 25 th ! 

INGREDIENTS: 

3 cups all-purpose flour 

1 teaspoon baking soda 

1/2 teaspoon baking powder 

1 teaspoon salt 

2 cups sugar 

1 cup vegetable oil 

3 eggs 

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

1 cup sour cream 

2 cups shredded zucchini 

1 cup chopped walnuts 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease two 

9x5 inch loaf pans. In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, 

baking soda and salt. 

In a large bowl, beat together the sugar and oil. Stir in the eggs one 

at a time, beating well with each addition, then stir in the vanilla. 

Blend this mixture into the flour mixture, alternately with the sour 

cream, stir just to combine. Fold in the zucchini and nuts, mixing just 

enough to evenly combine. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake in 

preheated oven for 80 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the 

center of the loaf comes out clean.

INGREDIENTS: 

1 cup butter, softened 

1 cup brown sugar 

1/2 cup white sugar 

2 eggs 

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 

1 teaspoon baking soda 

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 

3 cups rolled oats 

1 cup raisins 

1 cup crushed toffee candy 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets. 

In a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar and white 

sugar. Beat in the eggs, one at a time then stir in the vanilla. Combine 

the flour, baking soda and cinnamon, stir into the creamed mixture. 

Blend in the oatmeal and toffee bits. Drop by rounded spoonfuls 

onto the prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the 

preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes 

before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.
