DOLORES SUE, LONG-TIME PROPERTY MANAGER 

FOR SETTLERS VILLAGE, PASSES AWAY 

Evelyn Dolores Sue of Katy, Texas passed away unexpectedly on 

March 14, 2017 at the age of 63 in Houston, Texas. Dolores was 

the property manager for Settlers Village for so long, most of 

the neighborhood's residents did not know there was ever any 

other. Dolores was instrumental in the renaissance of Settlers 

when the neighbood had only 400 homes and was the furthermost 

neighborhood in the northwest part of county. She fiercly 

defended the neighborhoods she represented and ultimately 

proved herself to be a loyal friend. She brought joy, laughter, 

and love to everyone she knew. She will remain forever in the 

hearts of her family and friends.

at www.settlersvillagehoa.com. The Board is very interested in any and 

all feedback. 

There will be signs posted at the park/pool shortly to give all interested 

parties notification that the area is being monitored via surveillance 

cameras. 

Please also remember the rules regarding personal sign postings. 

Because your HOA is now responsible for the upkeep of sign and light 

poles, placing of private signs of any type onto county owned sign poles 

or Centerpoint owned light poles is expressly prohibited. Please do not 

subject yourself to the embarrassment of having your signs removed 

by the HOA or receiving a ticket from the sheriff who now patrols the 

district. The HOA can now levy civil fines related to the costs of clean-up. 

RESIDENTS OF HARRIS COUNTY MUD 105 

Best Trash picks up your trash on Tuesday and Friday. Your recycle 

collection day will be Friday. Please have trash and recyclables out to 

the curb by 7 AM. 

On each regularly scheduled collection day, Best Trash will collect 

residential refuse at the curbside. 

Trees, shrubs, brush trimmings and fencing must be bundled in lengths 

no greater than 4 feet with no branch diameter larger than 4 inches and 

bundles weighing no more than 40 lbs. The bundling is required to allow 

quick pickup and size limitations are required to avoid damage to the 

compacting equipment. 

Heavy/bulky items (appliances, furniture, carpet up to 1 room rolled up 4 

ft. wide and weighing less than 50 lbs) will be picked up either collection 

day. By Federal Law, refrigerators, freezers or any other item containing 

Freon must have the Freon drained and have an accompanying bill to 

validate such service was performed. 

Items excluded from normal collection are dirt, rocks, bricks, tires, cement, 

batteries, motor or cooking oil, waste generated from a private 

contractor or any items deemed to be hazardous materials. Best Trash 

will leave a tag explaining the reasons for non-collection of the item. 

An enhanced feature of the new provider will allow for collection of 

items excluded by the contract if notified in advance. Best Trash will 

meet with the customer prior to collection day to determine a price to 

haul the non-contract items. If a resident does not notify Best Trash of 

such a special pick-up before its scheduled day, Best Trash will leave 

a notice for the resident to contact Best Trash during normal business 

hours before the next scheduled pick up day.

Please do not dispose of gasoline, motor or cooking oil, paints or any 

other liquid item in a container that is not visible to Best Trash personnel. 

If not visible and results in spillage that causes a stain, Best Trash will 

not be responsible for clean-up 

Best trash takes great pride in our recycling efforts ensuring the best 

program for our customers. Please remove caps, liquids and food 

products from inside containers. Please use the provided recycle bins 

for recyclable material and not as extra trash bins. 

Best Trash will collect paper, plastics, aluminum and tin cans and glass 

(all colors) that are placed within the provided recycling bin, if items 

exceed container capacity, please place them adjacent to the bin marked 

as recyclable materials. If you find items left in your bin, it means they 

are not recyclable and the items should be disposed of in your trash 

container for the next scheduled pick up. 

Best Trash will provide each residence with one recycling bin and will 

replace any bins that are defective or otherwise become unusable 

through normal wear and tear. Theft, lost or additional bins can be 

purchased for $9 each by calling Best Trash.

Settlers Village wants to promote great yards. From May through October, 

the Board will make a once a month selection of the neighborhood’s 

best looking yard. Each month’s top winner will be awarded a $100 gift 

card. Board members and their families will not be eligible.

STS FOUNDATION SEEKS U.S. FAMILIES IN HOUSTON AREA TO 

HOST HIGH SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE STUDENTS 

FOR THE 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR 

STS Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to intercultural 

student exchange is looking for American families in the Houston area 

interested in sharing their America with international high school students 

for the 2017-2018 school year. Applications for interested Houston area 

host families are currently being accepted. 

STS Foundation was founded on the belief that international student exchange 

promotes understanding, respect and goodwill among people of 

all nations. Opportunities to increase intercultural awareness are offered 

to students, parents, host families and communities who are all involved 

in the exchange experience. STS Foundation foreign exchange students 

come from around the globe, are fully insured, bring their own spending 

money and are proficient in English. Whether from New Zealand or Brazil, 

India or Sweden, Ukraine or Italy, France or Lebanon, foreign exchange 

students are a window into another culture and a great way to travel the 

world without leaving your home. 

STS Foundation welcomes all interested families, with or without children, 

from both urban and rural communities, single parents or same-sex 

couples. Host families provide three meals a day and a bedroom (either 

private or shared). Each student is supported by a professionally trained 

STS Foundation Local Coordinator who works with the family and student 

for the entire program. All host families must pass a criminal background 

check and a home visit by an STS Foundation representative.

The first National Autism Awareness Month was declared by the 

Autism Society in April 1970. The aim of this month is educate 

the public about autism. Autism is a complex mental condition 

and developmental disability, characterized by difficulties in the 

way a person communicates and interacts with other people. 

Autism can be be present from birth or form during early childhood 

(typically within the first three years). Autism is a lifelong 

developmental disability with no single known cause. People 

with autism are classed as having Autism Spectrum Disorder 

(ASD) and the terms autism and ASD are often used interchangeably. 

A wide spectrum disorder, people will autism have set of 

symptoms unique to themselves, no two people are the same. 

Increasing Awareness About The Common 

Characteristics Of Autism 

Whilst no two people with autism will have the same set of 

symptoms, there are common characteristics found in those with 

this complex disability. Briefly, these characteristics include:

Social Skills. People with autism have problems interacting with others; 

autistic children do not have adequate playing and talking skills. Mild 

symptoms on one end of the spectrum may be displayed through clumsy 

behavior, being out of sync with those around them and inappropriate 

or offensive comments being made. At the other end of the spectrum 

an autistic person may not be interested in others. 

Empathy. Empathy is the ability to recognize and understand the feelings 

of another person. People with autism find it harder to show empathy to 

others although they can be taught to acknowledge the others feelings. 

Physical Contact. In some cases, autistic people do not like physical 

contact such as hugs, tickling or physical play with others. 

Sudden Changes To Their Environment. A sudden change in the surrounding 

environment may affect a person with autism. The could be 

a loud noise, a change in intensity of lighting or even a change in smell. 

Speech. Speech can be affected in people with autism. ‘Echolalia’ is a 

typical speech symptom in which the person repeats words and phrases 

that they hear. The speech tone of an autistic person may be monotonous. 

Where symptoms are more extreme, the person may not speak. 

Changes To Behavior and Routine. People with autism often display 

repetitive behavior in which they repeat the same action many times 

over. For example, a person with autism may repeatedly pace around a 

room in a certain direction. Any change to their behavior or routine can 

be unsettling for them. This could be a reordering of daily activities such 

as when a person brushes their teeth, takes a shower and has breakfast 

when they get up in the morning. Other characteristics of autism include 

an unpredictable learning rate, obsessions and physical tics. 

Autism Is Widespread, Awareness About This Condition Is Not 

In the United States, autism affects 1 in every 110 children. National Autism 

Awareness Month aims to make the public more aware about this 

widespread disability and the issues which arise in the autism community. 

As about 1 in 150 people in America have autism, the chances are that 

you know someone with this disability. A better informed public will be 

more empathetic and supportive towards people with autism. 

This month is backed by the Autism Society of America ,which undertake 

a number of activities to raise awareness about autism. The Autism 

Society has local chapters throughout the United States, which hold 

special events throughout April. The ‘Puzzle Ribbon’ is the symbol for 

Autism Awareness and is promoted by the Autism Society as means of 

supporting awareness for autism. The Puzzle Ribbon may take the form of 

a pin attached to clothing, a fridge magnet or a sticker and are available 

to purchase from the Autism Society website. 

The Autism Society of America also run a year long campaign through 

their 1 Power 4 Autism initiative, in which people are encouraged to hold 

events to raise awareness and support for those affected by autism. For

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging 

helps eliminate a great many pests 

that die from various causes while in the 

bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is 

trucked to your home, you are also buying 

ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little 

more on bagged material and save lots of 

future pest problems. Keep your mulch at 

least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes 

exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid 

in minimizing pests in your home and allow 

for quick and accurate termite inspections. 

Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all 

shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from 

your home. Do your best to create a plant 

free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your 

home. The exception is your lawn - it can 

grow up next to the slab as long as you keep

it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most 

conducive to termite infestation are groundcover 

plantings, growing high against your 

homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows 

on your walls. 

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. 

The spring spray eliminates overwintering 

pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist 

the pest onslaught of summer with residual 

pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from 

the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring 

over the winter and puts your valuable 

asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. 

Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide 

treatment to stop brown patch in its 

tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is 

thin and weak in some areas, here are some 

important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration 

b) fertilization c) weed control. 

Most important is proper watering: 

• Water once per week 

(unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - 

then do not water.) 

• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total 

lawn coverage. 

• In severe drought, water every 5 th day. 

• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - 

NOT AT NIGHT. 

• A heavy deep weekly watering makes 

the turf grow deeper, stronger and 

more drought resistant roots. 

• Less watering also saves you money!! 



ANIMAL INFORMATION 

SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE 

It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but please have courtesy to 

please scoop when your pet poops during your walks. Throughout 

the community trails, you will find areas to toss your pet’s poopage 

and in some areas, there are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags 

- you’ll be recycling at the same time! Many of your neighbors work 

hard with their lawncare and landscaping. Come with a scooper 

and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking up after your 

pets shows your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful 

community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are 

working hard to maintaining their grass! 

BARKING DOGS 

While it is true that dogs are born to bark, they were not born to 

bark all day and night, driving your neighbors crazy. If you have 

a dog that must stay outside, please do what you can to limit the 

disturbance to your neighbors. You can find loads of information 

about how to control it at www.barkingdogs.net. 

If you are one of the neighbors suffering from the seemingly endless 

noise of a neighbor’s barking dog, we hope that you will be able 

to speak with the owner about it. In many cases, the neighbor is 

unaware of the situation because, for one reason, they are away 

during the day. If the owner is unwilling or unable to do anything 

about it, you can call animal control at 281-999-3191 and have 

them do a check on the dog for possible neglect and abuse. (They 

won’t always come out for the barking alone.) The Sheriff’s Dept 

generally cannot do anything about it and they encourage you to 

call animal control as well. You can also find more information 

about the situation by looking on the website listed above. 

Ideally, the neighbors will be able to work out something mutually 

agreeable for everyone and every dog. 

VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION 

(Formerly called Harris County Animal Control) 

The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals 

found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost 

your pet, please check this website, www.hcphes.org/vph. 

Have you lost a pet? 

Start your search immediately, don't wait to make flyers. 

Contact all possible animal control or animal welfare agencies in the 

area. Visit each location at least every other day. 

Call your pet’s veterinarian and the microchip company to make sure 

they have current contact information for you. A citizen may try to 

call the veterinarian’s office or microchip company themselves from 

your pet’s tags. 

Call all the veterinarians in your area to alert them to the description 

of your lost pet in case someone brings it to their clinic. 

Check with your neighbors, especially families with children 

and ask if they’ve seen a pet that looks like yours. 

Search your neighborhood on foot, your pet maybe be nearby 

but is injured and unable to get back home. 

Leave a towel or article of clothing with your scent on it outside of 

your home. Your pet may be disorientated and will be attracted by 

your scent. 

Have you found a pet? 

First, think of the animal as lost and not abandoned and make every 

effort to reunite the animal to an owner. 

Contact the HCPH VPH office by telephone and report the animal 

as found. 

Bring the animal to the HCPH VPH facility or check with a local veterinarian 

to scan the animal for a microchip. 

Return to the place where you found the animal and put up a found 

pet poster near that location. 

If you find the owner, especially off a newspaper or website posting, 

ask them to provide a picture of the animal and meet in a public 

place like a police station.

A microchip is a small device (size of a grain of rice) that is permanent 

and implanted with a needle under the skin of pets. 

Pets do not have to be given any pain medication or anesthesia 

to implant a microchip. 

Microchips are not likely to move or need repair if implanted correctly. 

Microchips, when scanned, show a unique code. The microchip 

must be registered with the corresponding microchip manufacture 

to record any owner and animal data. 

Microchips do not work like GPS locators or LoJack and cannot give 

a signal to find the location of your lost pet.

HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW 

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. 

While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running 

at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many 

children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could 

result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. 

Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) 

advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while 

in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of 

a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed 

dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” 

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following 

circumstances: 

1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in 

length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable 

of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 

2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 

3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does 

not have access to sidewalk 

or street.” 

While it may be nice to have 

your animal out in the yard 

while you work or play, it is 

against the law, unless the 

animal is properly restrained. 

Let’s all help keep our community 

a safe and comfortable 

place for all our residents by 

being responsible pet owners. 

This will not only protect 

anyone who may be walking 

or bicycling in the area, but 

also the pet owner who could 

be held legally responsible 

or possibly sued for failing to 

properly restrain their pet. For

THE FIRST TIME! 

1) Daily calorie needs: Most women need 2,000 calories a day for good 

health and men generally need about 2,550. One way to work out your 

daily calorie needs is to multiply your weight in pounds by 13 to 15, 

depending on your activity level. But roughly, that’s 300 to 400 calories 

for breakfast, 500 to 600 for lunch, 600 to 700 for dinner and two or three 

snacks of roughly 100 to 200 calories each. Trying to lose weight? Eat 

roughly 500 calories less. 

2) Waist size: For women, health risk begins to rise when your waist is 

more than 35 inches. For men, risk increases with a measurement when 

your waist is over 40 inches. 

3) LDLs & HDLs: Aim for total cholesterol below 5.2 mmol/l (below 5 

mmol/l if you have heart disease or diabetes) and LDL cholesterol levels 

below 3.5 mmol/l or below 2 mmol/l if you have a history of heart 

disease. A healthy HDL level is 1.3 mmol/l or above. 

4) Blood pressure: A reading of 140/90 mm Hg or more is considered 

high and if it’s between 120/80 and 139/89, you may still be at risk and 

should be taking steps to prevent the development of hypertension. 

5) Triglyceride levels: A normal triglyceride reading is less than 1.7 

mmol/l. Your doctor will advise you how often you should have your 

triglycerides checked. 

6) Morning pulse rate: a normal resting pulse rate is 60 to 90 beats per 

minute. People who are fit tend to have lower resting pulse rates because 

their heart muscles are in good shape. But if you don’t exercise 

regularly and your heart rate is lower than the normal range, tell your 

doctor-it could be a sign of heart disease.

IN SCHOOL HISTORY 

The Cypress Falls High School boys’ basketball 

team came back from a first-half deficit 

and survived a late-game run by San Antonio 

Wagner to win the school’s first-ever UIL Class 

6A state championship, 63-57, on March 11 th 

at the Alamodome in San Antonio. 

The Golden Eagles (35-3) capped a historic 

season in dramatic fashion, rebounding 

from a 19-11 disadvantage to take control in 

the second and third quarters and distance 

themselves from the Thunderbirds. 

The Cypress Falls Golden Eagles display their 2017 state championship trophy. 

Wagner came within 3 points in the fourth 

quarter, but clutch free-throw shooting from 

Cypress Falls (32 of 40 for 80 percent) sealed 

the result. 

Cypress Falls High School junior Nigel Hawkins was named the MVP with an 18-point, 

4-steal performance in which he shot 10 of 12 from the free-throw line. 

Junior teammate Trajan Wesley led all scorers with 20 points on an emotional date. 

His late mother, Monica, passed away 10 years ago to the day on March 11, 2007. “I 

can’t explain it,” he said. “Even though she couldn’t be here, she was here in spirit. 

This is for her.” 

Championship MVP Cypress Falls junior guard Nigel Hawkins. 

“It was a great moment for our kids, but also for our fans,” Coach Flores said. “It 

was great to see so much green and gold out there and the support we had. A lot of 

people drove in today just to see this game. They stepped up for us.”

What is a fast paced hard hitting game so often termed, “THE COOLEST 

GAME IN TOWN” and is played in the Cypress area? You got it, High School 

Hockey…. and did you know that there are 10 teams and over 200 High 

School players in the Houston area that lace up the skates and drop the 

puck every weekend in the Greater Houston area? 

Hockey is a blend of speed, agility, strength and endurance with hard hits 

and graceful scorers. Hockey takes the hand eye coordination of baseball, 

the equipment and pads and hard hits from football and combines 

it with the skill of skating on a ¼ blade of steel to create what is some of 

the most entertaining action in sports today. Most players started skating 

at the age of 5 and are now High School athletes playing games every 

weekend with High School Varsity Action. A select few of the players carry 

the desire to another level playing on the local Houston Wild Travel Teams 

facing other teams from the Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Oklahoma 

areas. The desire and drive of these WARRIORS ON ICE is showcased 

every weekend from October to March with High School Varsity Action. 

The Interscholastic Hockey League or “ISHL” as its commonly known is a 

Houston Area High School Hockey League made up of a North and South 

division. The High School Varsity teams are comprised of either all players 

coming from one school or as a “blended” team which combines skaters 

from several schools. There are 5 teams in the ISHL North Division with 

4 playing their home games at the Willowbrook Aerodrome. The North 

Division teams are a blended team Fair Creek along with Cy-Woods, 

Woodlands, Klein and Brazos Valley. The South Division teams play their 

home games at the Sugarland Ice Arena in Sugarland. The South Division 

is made up of 5 teams, Cinco Ranch, Pearland/Friendswood, Memorial 

West, Seven Lakes and Clement/Ridgepoint. 


HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY REV’S UP TOWARDS THE PLAYOFFS 

The team holding the overall league leading record is Fair Creek 

whose players reside mainly in the Cypress area with 4 players 

from Cy-Fair HS, 2 from Cy-Creek HS, 2 from Langham Creek HS, 2 

from Cy-Ridge HS and 1 from Cy-Springs HS. In addition, there are 9 

players drafted from other schools (Tomball, Magnolia, Kingwood, 

Conroe and Humble). The Fair Creek team is led “locally” on the 

ice by CFISD Students Seniors Jaxon Sharp and Gail Snyder from 

Cy-Creek HS, Juniors Tyler McLeroy, Brandon Roskey and Brother 

Jonathon Roskey and Goalie Evan Ruonavaara all from Cy Fair High 

School, Juniors Caleb Newport and Grant Marconi from Langham 

Creek HS, Junior Grayson Slagle and Freshman Joey Epplin from 

Cy-Ridge HS and Sophomore Brendan Oglesby. Fair Creek’s team 

scoring leader is Sam Robinson from Kingwood HS and whose brother 

Jake Robinson also plays for the team. Fair Creek is led on the ice 

by the ISHL’S All Time Winningest Coach Paul St Amand with long 

time Assistant Coach Russ DiRaimo and 3 rd year Coach Jeff Smith. 

The final regular league games were played on Friday Night, February 

17 th with 2 STRONG matchups featuring 1 st Place Fair Creek 

going against 2 nd place Cy-Woods and immediately following was 

a matchup of #4 Cinco Ranch going against #6 Klein, both games 

were played at the Willowbrook Aerodrome. 

The exciting ISHL playoffs culminated with one team being crowned 

the 2017 CITY of HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPION. The playoffs 

ran from February 24 th through March 10 th , with the playoff matchups 

determined once the regular season games are completed. For more

After winning the TAPPS Eastern Region Division II Swim 

Meet last year and moving up to Division I this year, the 

boys’ swim team repeated as Region Champions, beating 

last year’s champion St. Thomas 123-112. Tomball Concordia 

Lutheran was third with 108. The girls finished 6 th 

with excellent performances from the entire team. The 

girls had 68% lifetime best swims and the boys had 76%, 

for a combined team improvement of 72%.

TAPPS State Meet slots. 

TEXAS CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL STATE PLAYOFFS 

You are looking at the 2016/17 Basketball State Runner-Up. The Texas 

Christian High School Varsity Guys continued the Tiger tradition by 

returning to the State Basketball Tournament and finishing as the State 

Runner-up with an overall 32-3 record. We are so proud of the team and 

individual performances this season and look forward to their growth

COLLEGE SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM 

Registration is under way for Lone Star College-CyFair’s popular Discovery 

College for ages 6-14. Morning sessions begin at 8:30 AM and 

afternoon sessions begin at 1 PM and are held June 12 th -29 th and July 

10 th -13 th . Discovery College programs are focused on STEM (Science, 

Technology, Engineering and Math), performing arts, physical activity 

and more, with some sessions designed for teens for building self-esteem,

CAMP CORNERSTONE 

IS THE PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER 

Camp Cornerstone is a week-long camp sponsored by Cornerstone 

United Methodist Church and is for children ages 2 through the completion 

of 4th grade. Children must be 2 by June 1, 2017. Camp hours 

are 9:30 AM-1 PM. There are 3 sessions throughout the summer and 

you are invited to participate in any or all! 

Session I - Rockin’ the USA! is June 12th-16th 

Session II - Wacky Wilderness… is July 10th-14th 

Session III - Ooey Gooey Fun is August 7th-11th 

The cost per camp per child is $120. You may pay $60 now and the

April 22-23, 2017 will be 

a weekend dedicated in 

recognition of the 70th anniversary 

the formation of 

the United States Air Force 

as the Commemorative Air 

Force (CAF) Houston Wing 

presents its annual Open 

House at the West Houston 

Airport. This event provides 

a rare opportunity for the 

public of all ages to immerse 

themselves in the sights and sounds of WWII and other authentic vintage 

military aircraft, which played a huge role in our American history. 

In addition to aircraft, several historic military vehicles will be on display 

as well as a very unique anti-aircraft gun trailer exhibit from the Battleship 

Texas. Our hangar’s WWII museum will also be open and docents 

will be available to help all ages enjoy the museum’s displays. 

West Houston Airport is located at 18000 Groschke Rd., 2 miles north of I-10 

and between Hwy. 6 and Barker Cypress, will be the place to visit on Saturday 

and Sunday, April 22nd and 23rd from 10 AM to 5 PM. The admission fee is 

$10 per car, which goes to supporting the organizations efforts to keep these 

aircraft flying. The airport gates will be open from 10 AM to 5 PM. Food, drinks 

and souvenirs and vintage aircraft rides will be available for purchase. For

NATURE PROGRAMS FOR PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN 

SATURDAYS IN NATURE 

This program is held on the second Saturday of each month at the Edith 

L. Moore Nature Sanctuary. Arrive anytime between 9 and 11:30 AM. 

The program ends at 12 noon. A guided nature walk will begin at 10 AM. 

No reservations required. Donations are encouraged. This is a “whole 

family” program; parents or other adult guardians should participate 

with their children. Upcoming programs include April program on Bird

The Titmouse Club 

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored 

by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is offered

The Children’s Choirs of Cornerstone United 

Methodist Church will be presenting their 

musical “Plane Ol’ Mission Trip!” on Sunday, 

April 30 th at the 10:45 AM service. Told with 

props, set and costumes, “Plane Ol’ Mission 

Trip!” tells the story about a group of kids 

headed on a mission trip. When they find 

themselves stranded at the airport due to 

inclement weather, they quickly learn that

Lifepath Church is now enrolling for Club T3, our After-School Program 

for grades K-5 th . Club T3 will be every Mon-Fri, 4-6 PM, following the

to Train, Teach and Tutor students with academic enrichment opportunities

more costumes to see and things to look at and do, at booths representing 

Australia, Sweden, El Salvador, Vietnam, Madagascar, the Bahamas and China, 

among others. 

Troops 113009 and 16503 performed the opening and closing flag ceremonies 

and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Girl Scout Promise and Law. We 

concluded the evening with a Friendship Circle and singing “Make New Friends.” 

Many thanks to Jewel Cardenas Munoz, who chaired the event! 

Cookie sales and Cookie booths continued into March and many of our troops 

decorated their cookie booths with posters, banners and other decorations, 

including giant “cookies” made of felt or cloth and hula hoops! 

We appreciate the support of our friends, families and neighbors 

during the annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale. Cookie sales fund individual 

troop activities and help to support our great camps. Many thanks to 

Michelle Baxmann and all the troop Cookie managers and volunteers 

for their hard work. 

March 12 th is the official birthday of Girl Scouting in the United States and many 

of our troops celebrated with parties and birthday cake. Many Girl Scouts also 

participated in Girl Scout Sunday/Sabbath events at their places of worship. 

Junior troop 16462 has been working on their Amuse Journey award Speak Out. 

They created a book about stereotypes that girls face and invited Daisy and 

Brownie Girl Scouts to their troop meeting. At the meeting, they read the book 

and talked about it with their sister Girl Scouts. They also made and served 

refreshments. Troop 113004 planned and held a Girl Scout only Cheer Clinic with 

the Cy Falls Cheerleaders for Copper Creek Meadows and nearby communities. 

Troop 16503 attended the Bechtel Engineering workshop. They learned about 

careers in a variety of engineering fields and did some “hands-on” engineering 

projects. 

Leaders and their daughters are looking forward to the Leader/Daughter Weekend 

in April. A weekend in Wimberley offers something for every mother/daughter 

combination, from horseback riding and kayaking to shopping and strolling. The 

Dutch oven cook off, talent show and great crafts and food make for a very special 

weekend. 

We still have a few more things planned for this year, including a Bridging 

Ceremony in May. Summer camp information for resident, day and twilight 

camps is available in the Golden Link and on the Council website and there are 

camp open houses and webinars (for parents) to explore. 

Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who 

are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level 

and no previous Scouting experience is required. 

COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY 

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL 

Girl Scouts from all levels in our Community participated in a Thinking Day 

event, in February. With troops representing countries from all around the 

world. On Thinking Day, we celebrated the international Scouting movement 

and our sister Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world. Troops also 

brought their nickel donations for the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund. 

Girls made their own passports and took a world tour as they visited the 

different booths, sampled international food offerings and traded swops. 

The photo cutouts for the Spanish senorita (complete with fan!) and German 

Fraulein with her long braids were popular with picture takers. Local color (and 

colors!) was everywhere. You could see feathered Carnival headdresses at the 

Brazil booth and berets at the French, classical costumes for Greece, “golden” 

sashes for Egypt and green hats, socks and headgear for Ireland. The Japanese 


Copper Creek Meadows Community serves Girl Scouts in the residence areas for 

the elementary schools listed below, as well as the corresponding middle and 

high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome.

Cub Scouts is a fun way to teach boys about character, respect, responsibility 

and many other traits. Pack 164 is a Christian, home school Cub Scout Pack that 

services the Greater West Houston/Katy area. Pack 164 promotes service to God,

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the 

Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping 

youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth 

develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills 

and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. 

The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow

• Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. 

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while 

promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As

Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through 

the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth 

Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - 

Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 

13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls 

from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.

SPORT ESSAY CONTEST 

DD Sports Association, a 501c3 non-profit company, working exclusively 

with N Zone Sports Cypress, is pleased to announce a great 

new program at participating Houston Area Schools. In an effort to 

teach children the values involved in sports and the lessons they 

teach, we will be hosting an essay contest. One student from each 

school will a 100% scholarship to participate in the upcoming N Zone 

Sports Summer League at Copperfield Church in Cypress starting in 

July. The essay contest will be open to all county students enrolled 

at elementary and middle schools. Students will be asked to write a 

one to two paragraph essay on the importance of Sportsmanship in 

sports. The goal of this contest is to help educate and teach children 

that the focus of sports is much greater than simply winning or losing. 

Principals from each school will be given the authority to determine 

how the winner is selected. Winning essays must be selected by Friday, 

April 28 th . All children that participate by submitting an essay will 

receive a $20 discount toward an N Zone Sports league registration. 

As a token of our appreciation, the essay administer from each school 

will receive a $25 Gift Card to Texas Roadhouse restaurant.

is celebrating its 30 th anniversary year and is a member of USA Track & 

Field. A full program of “track” events such as sprints, hurdles, middle 

distance, distance and relays and “field” events such as long jump, 

triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, shot put and javelin is offered. 

It is an excellent “off-season” program for young athletes who 

currently compete on their middle school or high school track teams.

Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and 

girls ages 4 to 18 for the SPRING Season. Games start on April 8, 2017. 

FFPS is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive 

youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, 

Texas, FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the 

Greater Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, 

including one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every 

player, equal playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced 

teams, positive coaching and more. No tryouts are required.

This month’s selection is Crawfish Fettuccine. 

I had this delicious dish when I attended my brother’s wedding in Canton, 

Mississippi. The event took place in September of 2004 with hurricane 

Francis coming ashore. I almost didn’t get out of Houston because 

of the major rain that hit here as well as Canton. 

We attended a wedding luncheon in a truly old southern home where 

the meal was prepared by some sweet southern women. There was so 

much southern charm and the food was outstanding. After asking for 

the recipe I received it in the mail by one of those sweet ladies. 

With crawfish season here I thought I would share. Enjoy!

CRAWFISH FETTUCCINE 

2 sticks butter 

3 onions chopped 

2 bell peppers chopped 

3 stalks celery, chopped 

3# peeled crawfish tails or Shrinp 

3 cloves garlic, minced 

1 TBS. chopped parsley 

1/2 cup flour 

1 pint Half & Half 

1# Velveeta, cubed 

24 oz. Fettucine 

Chicken broth 

1/4 cup chopped jalapenos (optional) 

Melt butter and saute onions, peppers & celery until tender. Add crawfish, 

simmer 10 min. stirring occasionally. Add garlic, parsley, flour and 

cream - mix well. Simmer on low heat 30 min. stirring occasionally. Add 

cheese & stir until melted. 

Meanwhile cook noodles in chicken broth and creole seasoning, drain 

and combine with sauce. Pour into 2 - 3 quart greased casseroles. 

Bake uncovered @ 300 degrees 20 minutes or until heated. 

Freezes well - 18-20 servings. 

If you like a little extra kick add jalapenos to sauce. Also if you freeze it 

and it seems stiff or dry when you reheat it, add about 1/4 cup Brandy 

or any liquid will return texture. 

TIP: If using frozen crawfish be sure to thaw and rinse before adding to 

mixture.

April 3rd-8th - The Bayou City Book Festival is a new initiative coming 

out of Lone Star College’s (LSC) Center for Civic Engagement. The Center 

desires to effectively and efficiently integrate literacy and literary works 

within the lives of their students and the wider Houston-area. BCBF seeks 

to create the venue for nationally and internationally known authors 

to speak to audiences about unique ideas, meet with attendees on an 

individual basis, provide free literary programming, promote diverse 

works of literature and their authors and focus attention on literacy

April 4th - The Menu of Menus® Extravaganza is one of Houston’s largest 

food & wine events featuring over 40 area restaurants alongside 

8 wine, beer and cocktail sampling. The event will also feature the 

6th Annual Iron Fork Chef Competition presented by Whole Foods 

Market. The Iron Fork Competition will showcase two of Houston’s 

most popular up and coming chefs as they face off in a head-to-head 

cooking competition that will be judged by local area celebrities and

April 8th - The Houston Art Parade will be in Downtown Houston 

from 2-4 PM. Don’t miss the 30th Annual Art Car Parade. Downtown 

Houston will come to life when more than 250 “motoriffic” mobile 

masterpieces hit the pavement. The Houston Art Car Parade is a free 

BYOG (bring your own goodies, lawn chairs, water, treats, no dogs 

please) event. The Parade has become a nationwide phenomenon 

and continues to bring out the artist in everyone. This year’s spectacle 

is expected to draw a crowd of 250,000 fans from across the map 

and approximately 250 local, national and international artists will

April 9th - Houston Barbecue Festival held at NRG Park (Gate 13, 

Green Lot), Lantern Point Drive at Westridge Street, Houston, TX 77054

its fifth year, the Houston Barbecue Festival will continue to showcase
