Page 2 Lanakila Baptist High School March <strong>2017</strong> Ka Nū Hou Maika’i Lanakila Baptist High School Lanakila Baptist High School’s KaNūHouMaika’i is a student-run and student-centered publication. Submissions KaNūHouMaika’i Encourages students, teachers, and staff to submit letters to the editor, opinion articles, poetry, and comics (editorial or otherwise). Editorials may be anonymous if desired. Poems must be in alignment with theme for the quarter (ask the office for more information). We will edit any submission for grammar, however, we will do so with care to prevent obstructing the author’s point. Any submissions may be sent to Mrs. Powell in person in the office or via email at sandra.powell@lbswarriors.org. Homecoming “Senior” Game By Ramon Shubert The student body celebrated homecoming at our pep rally in which the cheerleaders taught each class a different cheer allowing everyone to show their school spirit. The Boys’ Varsity Basketball team was introduced one at a time allowing each member to be recognized as they ran into the chapel. The pep rally also consisted of games and dance performances to hype up the team as well as the students attending the big game. Ashley Powell and Ramon Shubert received a special shout out as a final “hurrah” before their last game. The Warriors played their homecoming game at Hanalani Schools in Mililani. The boys gave it their all to the last second against Honolulu Waldorf, but fell short in the end with a final score of 57 -41. Jeffrey Mangahis scored a total of 14 points, Ramon Shubert 8, Andee Gary 6, Ray Pauley 5, Tyler Sproat 3, Kenton Bautista 2, and Joemar Corpuz 2. They showed genuine sportsmanship to the other team while the fans from Waldorf yelled and booed as we left the gym. The Warriors may have lost but did not lose heart as they were walking away with smiles on their faces, cracking jokes, and having a good time. March <strong>2017</strong> Lanakila Baptist High School Page 3 Pac Five Soccer By Kennsey Helgeson PAC-Five consists of various individual schools across the island coming together to form sports teams to compete in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH). Being a small school in Ewa, Lanakila Baptist is blessed to be a part of this group that allows small schools to come together and form teams for sports that they would not usually be able to engage in. Kaitlyn Guerrero and Alicia Paige are two seniors that have played soccer for many years and participated on the Girls’ Varsity team which won fourth place in Division 2 at the state’s tournament. The team’s record was tied at 6-6 competing against many schools including the following: Iolani Punahou, Kamehameha (Oahu and Hawaii campuses), Sacred Hearts, Damien, Seabury, and Kapa’a. Other students at Lanakila Baptist High School who played soccer with the “Wolfpack” are as follows: junior Michael Ramos, freshman Makoa Chambrella, eighth graders Lukas Hecker, Josiah Valentin’, and Wayne Chun Fat. The intermediate team including Lukas, Josiah, and Wayne earned an outstanding record of 7-2 along with one tie. They beat all three Punahou teams, won the Division 2 championships, and tied for second place in Division 1. Jump Rope for Heart By Rylie Kamanu In mid-February Lanakila Baptist High School holds an annual Jump Rope for Heart event in which most National Honor Society members spend a few hours in the morning at our elementary campus in Waipahu to interact with the younger generation and get them active outdoors. There are multiple activities that each grade may participate in such as jump rope, double-dutch, basketball, soccer, football, playground games, and a coloring room. Each activity got them either outdoors being active and staying healthy or challenging their imagination with the worksheets in the coloring room. Considering that the elementary students are so young with high energy levels, we are trying to instill in them that staying healthy and fit becomes a lifestyle. After an hour of exercise, the NHS provided healthy snacks including yogurt and oranges. Jump Rope for Heart is an event that not only allows the children to have fun while providing the motivation to stay healthy, but also raises funds for the American Heart Association. The proceeds are used for developing the science and practice of medicine in order to improve cardiovascular health and to help individuals who may struggle with strokes. Last year the organization raised about $149 million in funds for heart and stroke research to help fund the next breakthrough. This yearly event is an amazing way to get the children excited for fun outdoor activities.
