TAX TIPS
ORGANIZE YOUR TAX RECORDS
The key to a smooth tax season is
to keep your tax records organized.
Use our Tax Prep Checklist to
help gather all of the documents
needed for your return. Collect
any tax documents you receive in
the mail and store them in a safe
place with your prior year return
so everything will be easy to find
when you’re ready to file.
MAX OUT YOUR RETIREMENT
ACCOUNTS
You have until April 18, 2017
to contribute up to $5,500
($6,500 if you’re 50 or older)
to a traditional or Roth IRA
for 2016. As long as you aren’t
covered by a retirement plan at
work, the full amount of your
traditional IRA contributions can
be deducted on your tax return.
If you are covered by a plan
at work, your deduction may
be limited depending on your
income. Roth IRA contributions
won’t lower your tax bill but
the withdrawals will be tax-free
when you retire.
ITEMIZE YOUR DEDUCTIONS
For 2016, the standard deduction
is $6,300 for singles and $12,600
for married couples filing a joint
return. Although it may be easier
to take the standard deduction,
you may actually save more
money by itemizing instead. Not
only does ezTaxReturn make it
easy to claim your expenses, we’ll
even compare your standard and
itemized deductions so you can
get the biggest possible refund.
PROVIDE THE CORRECT
DEPENDENT INFORMATION
Make sure you provide the
correct social security numbers
and date of birth for each
dependent listed on your tax
return. If you don’t, your return
will be rejected and you’ll miss
out on money saving credits
like the Child Tax Credit which is
worth up to $1,000 per qualifying
child. Remember, if you’re
divorced, only one parent can
claim the child as a dependent.
If you and your ex-spouse both
try to claim the same child on
your return, one of the returns
will be rejected by the IRS.
FILE AND PAY ON TIME
If you need extra time to prepare
your taxes, you must request an
extension by April 18th. This will
give you until October 16th to
file your return without facing
a failure-to-file penalty. If you
don’t file an extension and you
owe the IRS, you will have to pay
a failure-to-file penalty as well
as a failure-to-pay penalty. The
penalty for filing late is usually 5
percent of the unpaid taxes per
month, while the late payment
penalty is usually 0.5 percent of
the unpaid taxes per month.
E-FILE
You can get your refund 3-6 weeks
faster by filing electronically
instead of by paper. The odds of
making a costly mistake are also
minimized because good tax
software like ezTaxReturn will
guide you through the process
step-by-step, completing all of
the forms and calculations for
you. Start your return now at
ezTaxReturn.com.

CHRIST COVENANT CHURCH LADIES BIBLE STUDY
The women’s group will begin a bible study, A Compassionate Call To
Counter Culture. We live in days marked by a rapidly changing moral
landscape. Debates rage. Emotions run high. But the stakes are even
higher than we might think. What if the real issue is the glory of God? How
are we to respond? In this small group Bible study, best selling author
David Platt calls the church to a contrite, compassionate and courageous
response to the most controversial issues in our culture.
This is a 6-week study and will cover the subjects of: Culture; Wealth;
Human Life; Sexuality; Race and Faith. Please join us on Tuesday
mornings at 9:30 AM, at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh,
Houston, TX, 77095, 281-463-6600. To register for the series, please go to
One of the largest non-celebrity tournaments in the Houston
area, the B.F. Adam Golf Classic is a prime example of our
trustees and community business partners working together
to raise scholarship funds for students of Cypress Fairbanks
ISD. This tournament has successfully raised over 2.7 million
dollars. CFEF was established in 1970 as a non-profit to raise
money to fund a scholarship for high school graduates in
the area. Over the past 46 years, the Foundation has grown
tremendously through the efforts of the Board of Trustees
and the generosity of the Cy-Fair Community. The Foundation
has awarded more than $7 million in scholarships to 1,400
graduating seniors. CFEF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization,
April Gardening Tips
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many
pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’
mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches,
termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future
pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes
exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home
and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18”
back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24”
wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to
the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most
conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high
against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates
overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest
onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests
from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and
puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown
patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in
some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b)
fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5 th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and
more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!

baking soda and salt.
In a large bowl, beat together the sugar and oil. Stir in the eggs one
at a time, beating well with each addition, then stir in the vanilla.
Blend this mixture into the flour mixture, alternately with the sour
cream, stir just to combine. Fold in the zucchini and nuts, mixing just
enough to evenly combine. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake in
preheated oven for 80 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the
center of the loaf comes out clean.
