Wags on Willow honored with two North Shore Choice Awards

In just six short years Wags On Willow,

the North Shore’s premier pet grooming

salon and boutique, has been cited five

times by pet owners for their superior services

in independent reader surveys.

The most recent honors came this week

with the announcement that Wags on Willow

was selected by 22nd Century Media’s

readers as the “best grooming salon” and

“best pet store” on the North Shore.

The 22nd Century North Shore Choice

Awards was the result of a poll taken by

readers of the publishing company’s seven

weekly publications serving more than

74,000 households in Glenview, Northbrook,

Wilmette, Winnetka, Glencoe, Lake

Forest and Highland Park.

“This is a very humbling honor and a

wonderful tribute to our amazing staff of

groomers and technicians,” said Wags on

Willow owner Mary Bowler. “Pet owner

and pet satisfaction is our goal with every

bath, groom and boutique sale and clearly

22nd Century Media readers believe we

have achieved that goal.

“We sincerely appreciate this tremendous

vote of confidence and remain committed

to the finest service for dogs and

cats in the region,” Bowler said.

Grand Food Center celebrates 30 years of business

Grand Food Center

owners Chris Barber, Dan

Klebba and Kevin Salus

know that it’s through the

kindness and support of

their customers that has

allowed their grocery business

to thrive as long as it

has. Celebrating 30 years

in 2017, the trio agrees that

it sometimes feels like just

yesterday when they were

New Trier classmates and

first met, working together

in the store they would

eventually own.

In an industry dominated

by large chain grocers,

The Grand Food

Centers in Glencoe and

Winnetka continue to be

an anomaly … a small,

neighborhood grocery in a

sprawling suburban community,

where employees

and shoppers are literally

on a first name basis.

“Everyone in the neighborhood

feels as if it’s our

grocery store, a sense of

ownership you might say,”

said loyal Grand shopper

Laurie Weissler of Winnetka.

“The Grand is involved

in every facet of the community,

from our schools

to local non-profits. We

all know the story of Kevin,

Chris and Dan being

raised in the community

and that’s very impactful

when it comes to deciding

which grocer we wish to

patronage.”

Proud to be selected as

Best Area Grocery Store in

this year’s 22nd Century

Media North Shore Choice

Awards balloting, The

Grand Food Center’s flagship

location in Winnetka

recently put the finishing

touches on a massive

re-imaging project that

proved not only be pleasing

to the eyes but also features

new LED energy efficient

lighting throughout

the store to help reduce the

grocer’s carbon footprint.

The project prominently

featured the installation

of brilliantly streamlined

glass-enclosed freezer and

refrigerated cases in the

frozen food and meat departments,

a larger, newly

designed salad bar, expansive

cheese shop with

more than 300 selections

from across the globe, a

complete redesign to the

deli and meat departments

and a expanded refrigerated

cake and pastry case.

“In 30 years of serving

as the area’s neighborhood

grocer, we’ve learned that

while we may not be the

biggest store on the North

Shore, we can provide the

best quality food, produce,

flowers and a wide variety

of other goods and services

that our customers expect

and deserve,” Barber said.

The Grand has also introduced

a new Android

and iPhone app that’s not

only easy to use, but allows

customers access

to manufacturer coupons

and sizable savings right

in the palm of their hands.

Featuring digital coupons,

weekly ads and shopping

lists that customers are

able to personalize and

import coupons to, the

app has quickly proven to

be a game-changer to the

hundreds of shoppers who

have downloaded it.

“We’re always striving

to be the best that we

can be for our customers,”

said Salus, who can be

found most days bagging

groceries in Winnetka.

“There aren’t many stores

that actually listen to their

customers’ special product

requests and who can turn

around and have a certain

product in the store in a

matter of days.”

“It all comes down to

this,” Klebba said. “We’re

striving not to be a chain

store because chain stores

don’t give back to the local

communities that support

them. It just feels like the

right thing to do.”

and desserts, signature

cocktails, and a local draft

beer list, moviegoers can

grab a drink and a bite to eat

before or after their movie.

Guests can also bring their

drinks with them into the

auditoriums.

In addition to the café,

ArcLight offers classic

concessions including popcorn

made with real butter

Sportsman’s in Northbrook named

North Shore’s top driving range

Thousands of North Shore residents

selected Sportsman’s Country Club Driving

Range, run by the Northbrook Park

District since 1978, as their top choice

for golf in a recent 22nd Century Media’s

North Shore Choice readers’ poll. Director

of Golf Greg Baron is excited to be

starting the 2017 golf season with the

Best Practice Range designation.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized

as the readers’ choice for best practice

range of the North Shore,” Baron

said. “We have a great staff and team of

PGA professionals that work very hard

to create a unique and enjoyable practice

and warm up experience at our driving

range. It’s a great feeling when the efforts

of your team are recognized. We are truly

appreciative that the readers have chosen

us as the best in the area.”

Sportsman’s driving range is designed

to accommodate players of every level and

whether they are an experienced player, beginner,

or junior playing the game, all feel

welcome. The District puts 42,000 new

Pinnacle Premium Practice balls in play

each year which features the No. 1 selling

golf ball dispenser in the world. The Range

Servant ball management system provides

numerous payment options and four bucket

Mathnasium offers math learning for children

Mathnasium offers a

fun and effective afterschool

math learning environment

for children in

grades 2-12. Mathnasium

- The Math Learning Center

- operates on the core

belief that virtually any

child can become great

at math. The Mathnasium

Method, implemented at

more than 750 Mathnasium

centers in the U.S. and

abroad, is a unique program

that provides each

child with a customized

learning plan and personalized

instruction in a

way that “makes sense to

them.” In 2016, Mathnasium

centers taught more

than 1.5 million student

sessions. This underscores

the critical role

after-school math education

has come to play for

students and parents alike

and the value of the Mathnasium

Method, which

combines mental, verbal,

visual, tactile, and written

techniques and focuses on

helping kids truly understand

math.

“At Mathnasium, we

focus solely on math, so

we know how to teach it

in a way that really connects

with kids,” said

Steve Santacruz, owner

of several Mathnasium

franchises on Chicago’s

North Shore and in California.

“Mathnasium centers

across the country

have helped struggling

students develop into ‘A’

students and ‘A’ students

go on to even greater

achievements. Children

at Mathnasium quickly

learn that math can be fun

and interesting as well as

extraordinarily useful,

both in terms of succeeding

in school and for the

valuable life skills it provides.”

For students, the Mathnasium

experience begins

with a highly detailed assessment

of each child’s

strengths and weaknesses,

which is then used to create

a customized learning

plan. Personalized

instruction from Mathnasium’s

highly trained and

caring instructors assures

that each student fully

understands key concepts

before moving on to the

next.

“The greatest part of

Mathnasium is that we

can individually tailor our

curriculum to each student’s

needs – from the

struggling student to the

gifted wanting enrichment,”

Santacruz said.

“The teaching of math

is rapidly changing these

days. Common Core standards

are impacting how

all students are taught, particularly

impacting gifted

students. In addition, the

expansion of technology,

such as graphing calculators,

is evolving topics reserved

in the past for college

to be taught in high

school. Math is the US is

a ‘mile-wide but an inchdeep.’

A lot of ground is

covered but not with great

depth. At Mathnasium, we

dig deeper so that our students

develop true mastery

in the topic.”

It's Exciting When Math Makes Sense!

At Mathnasium, we believe that every child has the ability to be successful in math—it’s a matter of teaching the way

that makes sense to them. When math makes sense, kids excel—whether they’re far behind or eager to get ahead.

For more than a decade, the Mathnasium Method has transformed the way kids in grades 2–12 understand and

appreciate math. We build math knowledge upon what they already know—this helps kids learn quickly and boosts

their confidence right away. When math makes sense, grades improve, excitement grows, and doors open!

Aesthetics as the top med

spa on the North Shore

has been a confirmation

of this. The most important

ingredients to the

success of his spas is his

involvement in the dayto-day

business operations,

training of his staff

and his commitment to

staying at the forefront

of medical skin care and

laser procedures. So often

the medical director

is in name only and plays

no active role in patient

care, and has little-to-no

knowledge of the treatments,

products or lasers.

He has attended product

training for all of the lines

carried in the spa. He is

also trained on and uses

most of the lasers, and

tests them often.

Dr. Zein Obagi, the

creator of the Obagi and

ZO skin care lines, has

a motto – “It’s never too

early or too late to have

amazing skin.” It is a

philosophy he follows in

his spa and practice. Last

year Schlechter went to

Obagi’s facility in California

to work with him

and advance his understanding

of skin care.

Schlechter said it was one

of the best trainings he

has attended.

Schlechter said he cannot

overemphasize the

importance of initial and

ongoing training for his

staff.

“I invest a lot of time

and resources into our

aestheticians so that they

provide superior services

to our spa clients,” he said.

“One of the first things I

tell the service providers

is you have one chance to

impress the client, and if

the service you provide is

not outstanding, they will

likely go elsewhere.”

Alison Spatz, the spa’s

current aesthetician, is

part of the reason they

were awarded best med

spa, as she provides excellent

service, but also

works hard to educate her

patients. She has commented

that one of the

reasons she loves working

at the spa is because

of her ongoing training,

and Schechter’s commitment

to its success. Spatz

also works closely with

Schlechter to provide

pre- and post-treatment

and scar management for

his cosmetic surgery patients.

Her recent trip to

his Spa at Spring Ridge

for advanced training on

facials, peels, laser and

microblading has only

enhanced her knowledge

and skills.

Schlechter is looking

forward to expanding

his med spa. He knows

the importance of having

physician knowledge and

accessibility to his staff is

invaluable in a med spa

setting.
