Wags on Willow honored with two North Shore Choice Awards 

In just six short years Wags On Willow, 

the North Shore’s premier pet grooming 

salon and boutique, has been cited five 

times by pet owners for their superior services 

in independent reader surveys. 

The most recent honors came this week 

with the announcement that Wags on Willow 

was selected by 22nd Century Media’s 

readers as the “best grooming salon” and 

“best pet store” on the North Shore. 

The 22nd Century North Shore Choice 

Awards was the result of a poll taken by 

readers of the publishing company’s seven 

weekly publications serving more than 

74,000 households in Glenview, Northbrook, 

Wilmette, Winnetka, Glencoe, Lake 

Forest and Highland Park. 

“This is a very humbling honor and a 

wonderful tribute to our amazing staff of 

groomers and technicians,” said Wags on 

Willow owner Mary Bowler. “Pet owner 

and pet satisfaction is our goal with every 

bath, groom and boutique sale and clearly

re-imaging project that

lighting throughout 

the store to help reduce the 

grocer’s carbon footprint. 

The project prominently 

featured the installation 

of brilliantly streamlined 

glass-enclosed freezer and 

refrigerated cases in the 

frozen food and meat departments, 

a larger, newly 

designed salad bar, expansive 

cheese shop with 

more than 300 selections 

from across the globe, a 

complete redesign to the 

deli and meat departments 

and a expanded refrigerated 

cake and pastry case. 

“In 30 years of serving 

as the area’s neighborhood 

grocer, we’ve learned that 

while we may not be the 

biggest store on the North 

Shore, we can provide the 

best quality food, produce, 

flowers and a wide variety 

of other goods and services 

that our customers expect 

and deserve,” Barber said. 

The Grand has also introduced 

a new Android 

and iPhone app that’s not 

only easy to use, but allows 

customers access 

to manufacturer coupons 

and sizable savings right 

in the palm of their hands. 

Featuring digital coupons, 

weekly ads and shopping 

lists that customers are 

able to personalize and 

import coupons to, the 

app has quickly proven to 

be a game-changer to the 

hundreds of shoppers who 

have downloaded it. 

“We’re always striving 

to be the best that we 

can be for our customers,” 

said Salus, who can be 

found most days bagging 

groceries in Winnetka. 

“There aren’t many stores 

that actually listen to their 

customers’ special product 

requests and who can turn 

around and have a certain 

product in the store in a 

matter of days.” 

“It all comes down to 

this,” Klebba said. “We’re 

striving not to be a chain 

store because chain stores 

don’t give back to the local 

communities that support 

them. It just feels like the 

right thing to do.”

North Shore Choice Awards ceremony

Winners of 22nd Century Media’s first North Shore 

Choice Awards were invited to attend a cocktail party 

and awards ceremony March 22, at the Winnetka Community 

House in Winnetka. 

The honorees feasted on a variety of hors d’oeuvres 

provided by Catered by Design including garden fresh 

crudites, grilled cheese and tomato basil soup, stuffed 

mushrooms, baby chicken bites, baby braised short ribs, 

crisp baked potato cups, and prosciutto, fig and caramelized 

onion flatbreads. 

Entertainment was provided by The Actors Gymnasium 

and included a contortionist, globe walker and magician. 

The award winners received a North Shore Choice 

Awards plaque with their business name engraved on it 

and a photo from the ceremony of each business owner 

or representative.

The Spa at North Shore Aesthetics 

offers a med spa like no other 

Dr. Benjamin Schlechter, 

M.D., F.A.C.S, a board 

certified plastic surgeon 

is the founder and medical 

director of The Spa at 

North Shore Aesthetics. 

He opened the spa in conjunction 

with his Northbrook 

Plastic Surgery 

practice more than four 

years ago. As the owner 

and medical director of 

The Spa at Spring Ridge 

for more than 20 years, he 

felt confident that he could 

bring his unique formula to 

the Chicagoland area, and 

enjoy the success he has 

seen at his other location. 

The recent selection of 

the Spa at North Shore 

Aesthetics as the top med 

spa on the North Shore 

has been a confirmation 

of this. The most important 

ingredients to the 

success of his spas is his 

involvement in the dayto-day 

business operations, 

training of his staff 

and his commitment to 

staying at the forefront 

of medical skin care and 

laser procedures. So often 

the medical director 

is in name only and plays 

no active role in patient 

care, and has little-to-no 

knowledge of the treatments, 

products or lasers. 

He has attended product 

training for all of the lines 

carried in the spa. He is 

also trained on and uses 

most of the lasers, and 

tests them often. 

Dr. Zein Obagi, the 

creator of the Obagi and 

ZO skin care lines, has 

a motto – “It’s never too 

early or too late to have 

amazing skin.” It is a 

philosophy he follows in 

his spa and practice. Last 

year Schlechter went to 

Obagi’s facility in California 

to work with him 

and advance his understanding 

of skin care. 

Schlechter said it was one 

of the best trainings he 

has attended. 

Schlechter said he cannot 

overemphasize the 

importance of initial and 

ongoing training for his 

staff. 

“I invest a lot of time 

and resources into our 

aestheticians so that they 

provide superior services 

to our spa clients,” he said. 

“One of the first things I 

tell the service providers 

is you have one chance to 

impress the client, and if 

the service you provide is 

not outstanding, they will 

likely go elsewhere.” 

Alison Spatz, the spa’s 

current aesthetician, is 

part of the reason they 

were awarded best med 

spa, as she provides excellent 

service, but also 

works hard to educate her 

patients. She has commented 

that one of the 

reasons she loves working 

at the spa is because 

of her ongoing training, 

and Schechter’s commitment 

to its success. Spatz 

also works closely with 

Schlechter to provide 

pre- and post-treatment 

and scar management for 

his cosmetic surgery patients. 

Her recent trip to 

his Spa at Spring Ridge 

for advanced training on 

facials, peels, laser and 

microblading has only 

enhanced her knowledge 

and skills. 

Schlechter is looking 

forward to expanding 

his med spa. He knows 

the importance of having 

physician knowledge and 

accessibility to his staff is 

invaluable in a med spa 

setting.
