BRITISH COLUMBIA: MOOSE TEXT AND PHOTOS: NICK TREHEARNE EEEEEEE-OOOOOO-F-F-F! It had been years since my grandfather taught me the sound that a moose makes during the rut, and it always comes to mind while in moose country. Fast forward a few years, and there I was sitting on a ridge in northern British Columbia with my guide Weston Stevens as a bull moose was coming in grunting. At first the grunts were faint and sounded about a mile away, but as the minutes passed they grew closer and louder. And then it was as though the moose appeared out of thin air. He was only two hundred yards away and coming in fast. Initially I had my bow ready in the hope of letting an arrow fly. Two hundred – one- fifty – one hundred… When he crested the small knoll that I had ranged at sixty yards, I clipped on my release and waited for him to take the last few steps into a shooting lane. It was early October and the temperatures were dropping, the rut was going strong, and I had high hopes of killing my first Canadian moose. Opportunity Knocks Moose hunting in this particular area has a way of filling your head with questions. There is an abundance of sign, great habitat, and no doubt there are many moose. However, when you drive and hike through miles and miles of backcountry only to find you’ve lost a few hours with nothing to show for it, your mind wanders. After the initial day with not a single moose sighting, and most of the second as well, this was certainly the case for me. Then on the second evening Weston took me into a remote area that once contained a main logging roadway that was now abandoned. My questioning abruptly ceased when in the distance we heard the faint bawling of a cow in heat. EEEEEE-OOOOO! Wait! Was that a grunt? We both looked at each other simultaneously as the realization set in that the cow was not alone. Step by step we crept down the brush-choked logging road. The wind was perfect and the moose were thrashing around and making lots of noise. I was optimistic and figured that this was going to be my chance. All I
