Guides like to do things the
hard way. No pack!
took off after the moose, while Weston
remained behind to continue calling.
I managed to parallel the bull, just waiting
for a clear shot. He’d disappear and then
reappear, in and out of the bush. Finally, I
could see that he was going to break out into
a clearing in the bottom of a small drainage.
My only option was to rush ahead and
set up for a shot. As I anticipated, it wasn’t
long before he appeared, facing me and presenting
a hundred-yard shot. Comfortable
with the angle and situation, I took an offhand
shot. The bullet hit him directly in the
chest. Instantly I worked the bolt and took
a second shot as he turned ninety degrees,
presenting a broadside opportunity.
Both shots were fatal and within a minute
and only a few yards traveled, there was
nothing but silence in the forest. It was the
comforting silence that I like to hear after
a kill, when you know the animal is not
wounded or running through the brush.
This hunt was a dream come true. •
