“I’m off work at six,” he answered. “If you make it at seven,
I’m there.”
Susannah sighed. “Yeah. I’ll be there.”
“I’ll call him as soon as I get home and make sure he’s free.”
I rose out of my chair. I didn’t want to talk to him in front of them.
I might say the wrong thing. Or I might say the right thing at the
wrong time. Either way, if I was going to ask him to hang out with
me after the events of the other night, I didn’t want anyone listening
in.
We said our goodbyes and filed out the door. As I reached
for the handle of my car door, Richard called to me from the
doorway, “Chelsea?”
I turned, expecting some more advice, some explanation as
to how to handle so delicate a situation.
“Good luck.”
