grounding myself like we had outside. Was it my imagination, or
did the rocks in my pockets feel sort of warm?
Tucker turned on his own flashlight, and I kept my beam
trained on him so I could follow him through the house. When we
got to the living room, he reminded me to watch my step, because it
was sunken below the rest of the floor. “That’s probably the most
dangerous thing you’re going to come in contact with tonight,” he
said.
“How is it going?” Mrs. Mason asked as we walked in,
speaking up for the first time.
“It’s going fine,” he told her. “We’re just getting started.
We’re going to go for an hour and then switch places. Are you doing
okay?”
“We’re a little nervous,” Mr. Mason admitted. “We never
leave all the lights off any more.”
That sounded like me. Whenever I was home alone, I always
made sure I left some lights on. Sometimes all of them. It was just
more comforting to be able to see.
“Don’t be,” Tucker reassured them. “You’re going to be
fine. Our team member Brad is very sensitive, so any spirits that are
here will probably be attracted to him. It’s like if there’s a room full
of people and most of them speak Spanish but two of them speak
English. The two who speak the same language are going to
gravitate to each other. Why bother trying to talk to someone who
can’t understand you? It’s the same with spirits. If someone is more
aware of them, they’ll probably head in that direction.”
“Is he, like, a psychic?” Mrs. Mason asked.
“Not quite. He can’t predict the future or anything. But he
can feel their presence. Sometimes he can see them. Everyone has
the ability, but he’s a lot more in touch with his.”
I actually found myself enjoying this. Since the Masons were
so nervous, Tucker was trying to ease their anxiety, but he was
easing mine at the same time.
Unfortunately, as team leader, he had a job to do, so we
couldn’t stay there forever. Once he was sure that the couple would
